1 Kings 9
Chapter 9
God's Promise and Warning
1 (C1)Now it came about when Solomon had finished building the house of the LORD and (C2)the king's house, and (C3)all (F1)that Solomon desired to do,2 that (C1)the LORD appeared to Solomon a second time, as He had appeared to him at Gibeon.3 And the LORD said to him, "(C1)I have heard your prayer and your plea which you have offered before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built, (C2)by putting My name there forever, and (C3)My eyes and My heart will be there (F1)always.4 "As for you, (C1)if you walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and honesty, acting in accordance with everything that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My ordinances,5 then (C1)I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I (F1)promised to your father David, saying, '(F2)You shall not be deprived of a man on the throne of Israel.'
6 "(C1)But if you or your sons indeed turn away from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have placed before you, but you go and serve other gods and worship them,7 (C1)then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and (C2)the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will (F1)expel from My sight. So (C3)Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples.8 "And this house will become (C1)a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and (F1)hiss and say, '(C2)Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and this house?'9 "And they will say, '(C1)Because they abandoned the LORD their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they (F1)adopted other gods and worshiped and served them, for that reason the LORD has brought all this adversity on them.'"
Cities Given to Hiram
10 (C1)Now it came about (C2)at the end of twenty years in which Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the LORD and the king's house11 (Hiram king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and juniper timber and gold, (F1)satisfying all his desire), that King Solomon then gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.12 So Hiram left Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him, and they (F1)did not please him.13 And he said, "What are these cities which you have given me, my brother?" So (F1)they have been called the land of (F2)(C1)Cabul to this day.14 (C1)And Hiram sent to the king (F1)120 talents of gold.
15 Now this is the account of the forced labor which King Solomon (C1)conscripted to build the house of the LORD, his own house, the (F1)(C2)Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, (C3)Hazor, (C4)Megiddo, and (C5)Gezer.16 For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and overthrown Gezer and burned it with fire, and killed the (C1)Canaanites who lived in the city; and he had (C2)given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife.17 So Solomon rebuilt Gezer and the lower (C1)Beth-horon,18 and (C1)Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land of Judah,19 and all the storage cities which Solomon had, that is, (C1)the cities for (F1)his chariots and the cities for (F1)(C2)his horsemen, and (F2)(C3)everything that it pleased Solomon to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land (F3)under his rule.20 As for all the people who were left of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the sons of Israel,21 (C1)their descendants who were left after them in the land, (C2)whom the sons of Israel were unable to completely eliminate, (C3)from them Solomon conscripted (C4)forced laborers, as they are to this day.22 But Solomon (C1)did not make slaves of the sons of Israel; for they were men of war, his servants, his commanders, his charioteers, his chariot commanders, and his horsemen.
23 These were the (F1)(C1)chief officers who were in charge of Solomon's work, 550, (C2)who ruled over the people doing the work.
24 As soon as (C1)Pharaoh's daughter came up from the city of David to her house which Solomon had built for her, (C2)he then built the Millo.
25 Now (C1)three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar which he had built for the LORD, burning incense with them on the altar which was before the LORD. So he finished the house.
26 King Solomon also built a (C1)fleet of ships in (C2)Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth on the shore of the (F1)Red Sea, in the land of Edom.27 (C1)And Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, sailors who knew the sea, along with the servants of Solomon.28 And they went to (C1)Ophir and received (F1)420 talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

Chapter 11
God Yearns over His People
1 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And (C1)out of Egypt I (C2)called My son.
2 The more (F1)(C1)they called them,
The more they went away from (F1)them;
They kept (C2)sacrificing to the Baals
And (C3)burning incense to idols.
3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,
(F1)I (C1)took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I (C2)healed them.
4 I (C1)pulled them along with cords of a man, with ropes of love,
And (C2)I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and (C3)fed them.
5 (F1)They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria—he will be (F2)their king
Because they (C1)refused to return to Me.
6 And the (C1)sword will whirl against (F1)their cities,
And will destroy (F1)their oracle priests
And (C2)consume them, because of their (C3)counsels.
7 So My people are determined to (C1)turn from Me.
Though (F1)they call (F2)them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.
8 (C1)How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I (F1)make you like (C2)Admah?
How can I treat you like (C2)Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me,
(F2)All My compassions are kindled.
9 I will (C1)not carry out My fierce anger;
I will not destroy Ephraim (C2)again.
For (C3)I am God and not a man, the (C4)Holy One in your midst,
And I will not come in (F1)wrath.
10 They will (C1)walk after the LORD,
He will (C2)roar like a lion;
Indeed He will roar,
And His sons will come (C3)trembling from the west.
11 They will come trembling like birds from (C1)Egypt,
And like (C2)doves from the land of (C1)Assyria;
And I will (C3)settle them in their houses, declares the LORD.<
Mark 14:32-72
Chapter 14
32 (C1)They (*)came to a place named (F1)Gethsemane; and He (*)said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed."33 And He (*)took with Him Peter, (F1)James, and John, and began to be very (C1)distressed and troubled.34 And He (*)said to them, "(C1)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and (F1)keep watch."35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began praying that if it were possible, (C1)the hour might (F1)pass Him by.36 And He was saying, "(C1)Abba! (F1)Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (C2)yet not what I will, but what You will."37 And He (*)came and (*)found them sleeping, and (*)said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not (F1)keep watch for one hour?38 "(F1)(C1)Keep watching and praying, so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same (F1)words.40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say in reply to Him.41 And He (*)came the third time, and (*)said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough. (C1)The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being (F1)betrayed into the hands of sinners.42 "Get up, let's go; behold, the one who is betraying Me is near!"
Betrayal and Arrest
43 (C1)And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, (*)came up, (F1)accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs who were from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him and lead Him away (F1)under guard."45 And after coming, Judas immediately went to Him and (*)said, "(C1)Rabbi!" and kissed Him.46 And they laid hands on Him and arrested Him.47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and (F1)cut off his ear.48 And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a man inciting a revolt?49 "Every day I was with you (C1)within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me; but this has taken place so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled."50 And (F1)His disciples all left Him and fled.
51 A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they (*)seized him.52 But he (F1)pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.
Jesus before His Accusers
53 (C1)They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes (*)gathered together.54 And Peter had followed Him at a distance, (C1)right into (C2)the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the (F1)officers and (C3)warming himself at the (F2)fire.55 Now the chief priests and the entire (F1)(C1)Council were trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any.56 For many people were giving false testimony against Him, and so their testimonies were not consistent.57 And then some stood up and began giving false testimony against Him, saying,58 "We heard Him say, '(C1)I will destroy this (F1)temple that was made by hands, and in three days I will build another, made without hands.'"59 And not even in this respect was their testimony consistent.60 And then the high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not offer any answer for what these men are testifying against You?"61 (C1)But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. (C2)Again the high priest was questioning Him, and (*)said to Him, "Are You the (F1)Christ, the Son of (F2)the Blessed One?"62 And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see (C1)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and (C2)coming with the clouds of heaven."63 (C1)Tearing his clothes, the high priest (*)said, "What further need do we have of witnesses?64 "You have heard the (C1)blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.65 And some began to (C1)spit on Him, and (F1)(C2)to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists and say to Him, "(C3)Prophesy!" Then the officers took custody of Him (F2)and slapped Him in the face.
Peter's Denials
66 (C1)And while Peter was below in (C2)the courtyard, one of the slave women of the high priest (*)came,67 and seeing Peter (C1)warming himself, she looked at him and (*)said, "You were with Jesus the (C2)Nazarene as well."68 But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he (C1)went out onto the (F1)porch.(F2)69 The slave woman saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This man is one of them!"70 But again (C1)he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "You really are one of them, (C2)for you are a Galilean as well."71 But he began to (F1)curse himself and to swear, "I do not know this Man of whom you speak!"72 And immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before (C1)a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And (F1)he hurried on and began to weep.
