Chapter 9
The Lord's Response
1 When Solomon finished building the temple of the Lord ,(a) the royal palace, and all that Solomon desired to do,(b) 2 the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time just as He had appeared to him at Gibeon.(c) 3 The Lord said to him:
I have heard your prayer and petition you have made before Me. I have consecrated this temple you have built, to put My name there forever;(d) My eyes and My heart will be there at all times.(e)
4 As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, with a heart of integrity and in what is right, doing everything I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and ordinances,(f) 5 I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.(g)
6 If you or your sons turn away from following Me and do not keep My commands—My statutes that I have set before you—and if you go and serve other gods and worship them,(h) 7 I will cut off Israel from the land I gave them,(i) and I will reject[a] the temple I have sanctified for My name.(j) Israel will become an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.(k) 8 Though this temple is now exalted,[b] everyone who passes by will be appalled and will mock.[c] They will say: Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple?(l) 9 Then they will say: Because they abandoned the Lord their God who brought their ancestors out of the land of Egypt. They clung to other gods and worshiped and served them. Because of this, the Lord brought all this ruin on them.(m)
King Hiram's 20 Towns
10 At the end of 20 years during which Solomon had built the two houses, the Lord 's temple and the royal palace(n)— 11 Hiram king of Tyre(o) having supplied him with cedar and cypress logs and gold(p) for his every wish(q)—King Solomon gave Hiram 20 towns in the land of Galilee. 12 So Hiram went out from Tyre to look over the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them. 13 So he said, "What are these towns you've given me, my brother?" So he called them the Land of Cabul,[d] as they are still called today.(r) 14 Now Hiram had sent the king 9,000 pounds[e] of gold.(s)
Solomon's Forced Labor
15 This is the account of the forced labor(t) that King Solomon had imposed to build the Lord 's temple, his own palace, the supporting terraces,(u) the wall of Jerusalem,(v) and Hazor,(w) Megiddo,(x) and Gezer.(y) 16 Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He then burned it down, killed the Canaanites who lived in the city, and gave it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife.(z) 17 Then Solomon rebuilt Gezer, Lower Beth-horon,(aa) 18 Baalath,(ab) Tamar[f][g] in the Wilderness of Judah, 19 all the storage cities that belonged to Solomon, the chariot cities,(ac) the cavalry cities,(ad) and whatever Solomon desired to build(ae) in Jerusalem, Lebanon, or anywhere else in the land of his dominion.
20 As for all the peoples who remained of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not Israelites— 21 their descendants who remained in the land after them, those whom the Israelites were unable to completely destroy(af)—Solomon imposed forced labor on them; it is this way until today.(ag) 22 But Solomon did not consign the Israelites to slavery;(ah) they were soldiers, his servants, his commanders, his captains, and commanders of his chariots and his cavalry. 23 These were the deputies(ai) who were over Solomon's work: 550 who ruled over the people doing the work.(aj)
Solomon's Other Activities
24 Pharaoh's daughter moved from the city of David(ak) to the house that Solomon had built for her;(al) he then built the terraces.(am)
25 Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord , and he burned incense with them in the Lord 's presence.(an) So he completed the temple.(ao)
26 King Solomon put together a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber,(ap) which is near Eloth on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom. 27 With the fleet, Hiram sent his servants, experienced seamen, along with Solomon's servants. 28 They went to Ophir(aq) and acquired gold there—16 tons[h]—and delivered it to Solomon.(ar)
Hosea 11:1-11
Chapter 11
The Lord's Love for Israel
1 When Israel was a child, I loved him,(a)
and out of Egypt I called My son.(b)
2 The more they[a] called them,[b](c)
the more they[c] departed from Me.[d]
They kept sacrificing to the Baals(d)
and burning offerings to idols.(e)
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,(f)
taking them[e] in My arms,(g)
but they never knew that I healed them.(h)
4 I led them with human cords,
with ropes of love.(i)
To them I was like one
who eases the yoke from their jaws;(j)
I bent down to give them food.(k)
5 Israel will not return to the land of Egypt
and Assyria will be his king,(l)
because they refused to repent.(m)
6 A sword will whirl through his cities;(n)
it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,[f](o)
because of their schemes.(p)
7 My people are bent on turning from Me.(q)
Though they call to Him on high,
He will not exalt them at all.
8 How can I give you up, Ephraim?(r)
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?(s)
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?(t)
I have had a change of heart;
My compassion is stirred!
9 I will not vent the full fury of My anger;(u)
I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim.(v)
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One among you;(w)
I will not come in rage.[g]
10 They will follow the
Lord
;(x)
He will roar like a lion.(y)
When He roars,
His children will come trembling from the west.(z)
11 They will be roused like birds from Egypt
and like doves(aa) from the land of Assyria.(ab)
Then I will settle them in their homes.(ac)
This is the
Lord
's declaration.
Mark 14:32-72
Chapter 14
32 Then(bk) they came to a place named Gethsemane, and He told His disciples,(bl) "Sit here while I pray." (bm) 33 He took Peter,(bn) James,(bo) and John(bp) with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and horrified. 34 Then He said to them, "My soul is swallowed up in sorrow[i] —to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake." (bq) 35 Then He went a little farther, fell to the ground, and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour(br) might pass from Him. 36 And He said, "Abba,(bs) Father!(bt) All things are possible(bu) for You. Take this cup(bv) away from Me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."
37 Then He came and found them sleeping. "Simon,(bw) are you sleeping?" He asked Peter.(bx) "Couldn't you stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray(by) so that you won't enter into temptation.(bz) The spirit(ca) is willing, but the flesh(cb) is weak."
39 Once again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And He came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.[j] They did not know what to say to Him.(cc) 41 Then He came a third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man(cd) is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.(ce) 42 Get up;(cf) let's go! See—My betrayer is near."
The Judas Kiss
43 While(cg) He was still speaking, Judas,(ch) one of the Twelve,(ci) suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes,(cj) and the elders.(ck) 44 His betrayer had given them a signal. "The One I kiss," he said, "He's the One; arrest Him and take Him away under guard." 45 So when he came, he went right up to Him and said, "Rabbi!"(cl)—and kissed Him. 46 Then they took hold of Him and arrested Him. 47 And one of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his ear.
48 But Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as though I were a criminal,[k] to capture Me? 49 Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple complex,(cm) and you didn't arrest Me. But the Scriptures(cn) must be fulfilled." (co) 50 Then they all deserted Him and ran away.(cp)
51 Now a certain young man,[l] having a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body, was following Him. They caught hold of him, 52 but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.(cq)
Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin
53 They(cr) led Jesus away to the high priest,(cs) and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes(ct) convened.(cu) 54 Peter(cv) followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest's courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police,[m](cw) warming himself by the fire.[n]
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(cx) were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,(cy) but they could find none. 56 For many were giving false testimony(cz) against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. 57 Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, 58 "We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands,(da) and in three days I will build another not made by hands.'" 59 Yet their testimony did not agree(db) even on this.
60 Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, "Don't You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?" 61 But He kept silent and did not answer anything.(dc) Again the high priest questioned Him, "Are You the Messiah,(dd) the Son(de) of the Blessed(df) One?"
62 "I am," (dg) said Jesus, "and all of you[o] will see the Son of Man (dh) seated at the right hand (di) of the Power and coming with the clouds (dj) of heaven ." (dk)[p]
63 Then the high priest(dl) tore his robes(dm) and said, "Why do we still need witnesses?(dn) 64 You have heard the blasphemy!(do) What is your decision?"[q]
And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.(dp) 65 Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, "Prophesy!"(dq) The temple police(dr) also took Him and slapped Him.
Peter Denies His Lord
66 While(ds) Peter(dt) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's servants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with that Nazarene,(du) Jesus."
68 But he denied it: "I don't know or understand what you're talking about!" Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.[r]
69 When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, "This man is one of them!"
70 But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, "You certainly are one of them, since you're also a Galilean!"[s](dv)
71 Then he started to curse[t] and to swear with an oath,(dw) "I don't know this man you're talking about!"
72 Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,(dx) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." When he thought about it, he began to weep.[u]
