Chapter 24
The Census Taken
1 (C1)Now (C2)the anger of the LORD burned against Israel again, and He incited David against them to say, "(C3)Go, count Israel and Judah."2 So the king said to Joab the commander of the army, who was with him, "Roam about now through all the tribes of Israel, (C1)from Dan to Beersheba, and conduct a census of the people, so that I may know the number of the people."3 But Joab said to the king, "(C1)May the LORD your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king can still see; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?"4 Nevertheless, the king's order prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army left the presence of the king to conduct a census of the people of Israel.5 They crossed the Jordan and camped in (C1)Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the Valley of Gad and toward (C2)Jazer.6 Then they came to Gilead and to (F1)the land of Tahtim-hodshi, and they came to Dan-jaan and around to (C1)Sidon,7 then they came to the (C1)fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the (C2)Hivites and of the Canaanites, and they went out to the south of Judah, to (C3)Beersheba.8 So when they had roamed about through the whole land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.9 And Joab gave (C1)the number of the census of the people to the king: in Israel there were (C2)eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
10 Now (C1)David's heart (F1)troubled him after he had counted the people. So David said to the LORD, "(C2)I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, LORD, please (F2)overlook the guilt of Your servant, for (C3)I have acted very foolishly."11 When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD came to (C1)Gad the prophet, David's (C2)seer, saying,12 "Go and speak to David, 'This is what the LORD says: "I am imposing upon you three choices; choose for yourself one of them, and I will do it to you."'"13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, "Shall (C1)seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee for three months before your enemies while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now consider and see what answer I shall return to Him who sent me."14 Then David said to Gad, "I am in great distress. Let us now fall into the hand of the LORD, (C1)for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into human hands."
Plague Sent
15 So (C1)the LORD (F1)sent a plague upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time, and seventy thousand men of the people (C2)from Dan to Beersheba died.16 (C1)When the angel extended his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, (C2)the LORD relented of the disaster and said to the angel who destroyed the people, "It is enough! Now drop your hand!" And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.17 Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who was striking down the people, and said, "Behold, (C1)it is I who have sinned, and it is I who have done wrong; but (C2)these sheep, what have they done? Please let Your hand be against me and against my father's house!"
David Builds an Altar
18 So Gad came to David that day and said to him, "(C1)Go up, erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of (F1)Araunah the Jebusite."19 Then David went up in accordance with the word of Gad, just as the LORD had commanded.20 And Araunah looked down and saw the king and his servants crossing over toward him; so Araunah went out and bowed his face to the ground before the king.21 Then Araunah said, "Why has my lord the king come to his servant?" And David said, "To buy the threshing floor from you, in order to build an altar to the LORD, (C1)so that the plague may be (F1)withdrawn from the people."22 Araunah then said to David, "Let my lord the king take and offer up what is good in his sight. Look, here are (C1)the oxen for the burnt offering, the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.23 "Everything, O king, Araunah gives to the king." And Araunah said to the king, "May the LORD your God be (C1)favorable to you."24 However, the king said to Araunah, "No, but I will certainly buy it from you for a price; for (C1)I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God (F1)that cost me nothing." So (C2)David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.25 Then David built there an altar to the LORD, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And (C1)the LORD responded to prayer for the land, and the plague was (F1)withdrawn from Israel.

Chapter 4
God's Controversy with Israel
1 (C1)Listen to the word of the LORD, you sons of Israel,
Because the LORD has a (C2)case against the inhabitants of the land,
For there is (C3)no (F1)faithfulness, nor (F2)loyalty,
Nor (C4)knowledge of God in the land.
2 There is (C1)oath-taking, (F1)(C2)denial, (C3)murder, (C4)stealing, and (C5)adultery.
They employ violence, so that (C6)bloodshed (F2)follows bloodshed.
3 Therefore the land (C1)mourns,
And everyone who lives in it languishes
Along with the animals of the field and the birds of the sky,
And even the fish of the sea (F1)disappear.
4 Yet let no one (F1)(C1)find fault, and let no one rebuke;
For your people are like those who (C2)contend with a priest.
5 So you will (C1)stumble by day,
And the prophet also will stumble with you by night;
And I will destroy your (C2)mother.
6 (C1)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Since you have (C2)rejected knowledge,
I also will (C3)reject you from being My priest.
Since you have (C4)forgotten the (C5)Law of your God,
I also will forget your children.
7 The more they (C1)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;
I will (C2)change their glory into shame.
8 They (C1)feed on the (F1)sin of My people,
And (C2)long for their wrongdoing.
9 And it will be, like people, (C1)like priest;
So I will (C2)punish them for their ways
And repay them for their deeds.
10 (C1)They will eat, but not have enough;
They will (C2)play the prostitute, but not (F1)increase,
Because they (C3)gave up devoting themselves to the LORD.
11 (F1)Infidelity, (C1)wine, and new wine take away the (F2)understanding.<
Mark 10:32-52
Chapter 10
32 (C1)Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they (C2)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,33 saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (C1)the Son of Man will be (F1)handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will (F2)hand Him over to the Gentiles.34 "And they will mock Him and (C1)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead."
35 (F1)(C1)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, (*)came up to (F2)Jesus, saying to Him, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."36 And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"37 They said to Him, "(F1)Grant that we (C1)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory."38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (C1)to drink the cup that I drink, or (C2)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"39 They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink (C1)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.40 "But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; (C1)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
41 (C1)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with (F1)James and John.42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus (*)said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their (F1)people in high position exercise authority over them.43 "But it is not this way among you; (C1)rather, whoever wants to become (F1)prominent among you shall be your servant;44 and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all.45 "For even the Son of Man (C1)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His (F1)life as a ransom for many."
Bartimaeus Receives His Sight
46 (C1)Then they (*)came to Jericho. And later, (C2)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the (C1)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, (C2)Son of David, have mercy on me!"48 Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, "(C1)Son of David, have mercy on me!"49 And Jesus stopped and said, "Call him here." So they (*)called the man who was blind, saying to him, "(C1)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you."50 And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.51 And replying to him, Jesus said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" And the man who was blind said to Him, "(F1)(C1)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!"52 And Jesus said to him, "Go; (C1)your faith has (F1)made you well." And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
