Chapter 19
Joab Disapproves of David's Mourning
1 (F1)Then it was reported to Joab, "Behold, (C1)the king is weeping and he mourns for Absalom."2 So the (F1)victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, because the people heard it said that day, "The king is in mourning over his son."3 And the people entered the city surreptitiously that day, just as people who are humiliated surreptitiously flee in battle.4 And the king (C1)covered his face and (F1)cried out with a loud voice, "(C2)My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son!"5 Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, "Today you have shamed (F1)all your servants, who have saved your life today and the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines,6 by loving those who hate you, and by hating those who love you. For you have revealed today that (F1)commanders and servants are nothing to you; for I know today that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then it would be right (F2)as far as you are concerned.7 "Now therefore arise, go out and speak (F1)kindly to your servants, for I swear by the LORD, if you do not go out, (C1)no man will stay the night with you, and this will be worse for you than all the misfortune that has (F2)happened to you from your youth until now!"
David Restored as King
8 So the king got up and sat at the gate. When they told all the people, saying, "Behold, the king is (C1)sitting at the gate," then all the people came before the king.
11 Then King David sent word to (C1)Zadok and Abiathar the priests, saying, "Speak to the elders of Judah, saying, 'Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house, since the word of all Israel has come to the king, even to his house?12 'You are my brothers; (C1)you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?'13 "And say to (C1)Amasa, 'Are you not my bone and my flesh? (C2)May God do so to me, and more so, if you will not be (C3)commander of the army (F1)for me continually, (C4)in place of Joab.'"14 So he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah (C1)as one man, so that they sent word to the king, saying, "Return, you and all your servants."15 The king then returned and came as far as the Jordan. And the men of Judah came to (C1)Gilgal in order to go to meet the king, to escort the king across the Jordan.
16 Then (C1)Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite who was from Bahurim, hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and (C1)Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they rushed to the Jordan before the king.18 Then they crossed the shallow places repeatedly to bring over the king's household, and to do what was good in his sight. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king as he was about to cross the Jordan.19 And he said to the king, "(C1)May my lord not consider me guilty, nor call to mind what your servant did wrong on the day when my lord the king went out from Jerusalem, so that the king would (F1)take it to heart.20 "For your servant knows that I have sinned; so behold, I have come today, (C1)the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king."21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah responded, "(C1)Should Shimei not be put to death for this, (C2)the fact that he cursed the LORD'S anointed?"22 David then said, "(C1)What (F1)is there between you and me, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary to me today? (C2)Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? For do I not know that I am king over Israel today?"23 So the king said to Shimei, "(C1)You shall not die." The king also swore to him.
24 Then (C1)Mephibosheth the (F1)grandson of Saul came down to meet the king; but (C2)he had neither (F2)tended to his feet, nor (F2)trimmed his mustache, nor (C3)washed his clothes since the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.25 And it was when he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, "(C1)Why did you not go with me, Mephibosheth?"26 So he said, "My lord the king, my servant betrayed me; for your servant said, 'I will (F1)saddle the donkey for myself so that I may ride on it and go with the king,' (C1)since your servant cannot walk.27 "Furthermore, (C1)he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is (C2)like the angel of God, therefore do what is good in your sight.28 "For (C1)all my father's household was only people worthy of death to my lord the king; (C2)yet you placed your servant among those who ate at your own table. So what right do I still have, that I should (F1)complain anymore to the king?"29 So the king said to him, "Why do you still speak of your affairs? I have (F1)decided, 'You and Ziba shall divide the land.'"30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him even take it all, since my lord the king has come safely to his own house."
31 Now (C1)Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim; and he went on to the Jordan with the king to (F1)escort him over the Jordan.32 Barzillai was very old: eighty years old; and he had (C1)provided the king food while he stayed in Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.33 So the king said to Barzillai, "You cross over with me, and I will provide you food in Jerusalem with me."34 But Barzillai said to the king, "(C1)How long (F1)do I still have to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?35 "I am (F1)now (C1)eighty years old. Can I distinguish between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I still hear (C2)the voice of men and women singing? (C3)Why then should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?36 "Your servant would merely cross over the Jordan with the king. So why should the king compensate me with this reward?37 "Please let your servant return, so that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. However, here is your servant (C1)Chimham; let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight."38 And the king answered, "Chimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him what is good in your sight; and whatever you (F1)require of me, I will do for you."39 All the people crossed over the Jordan and the king crossed too. The king then (C1)kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned to his place.
40 Now the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah and also (C1)half the people of Israel (F1)accompanied the king.41 And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, "(C1)Why have our brothers, (C2)the men of Judah, abducted you and brought the king and his household and all David's men with him, over the Jordan?"42 Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because (C1)the king is a close relative to (F1)us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all (F2)at the king's expense, or has anything been taken for us?"43 But the men of Israel answered the men of Judah and said, "(F1)(C1)We have ten parts in the king, therefore (F1)we also have more claim on David than you. Why then did you treat (F1)us with contempt? Was it not (F1)our (F2)advice first to bring back (F1)our king?" Yet the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel.
Daniel 12
Chapter 12
The Time of the End
1 "Now at that time (C1)Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a (C2)time of distress (C3)such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the (C4)book, will be rescued.2 "And (C1)many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, (C2)these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting (F1)contempt.3 "And (F1)those who have (C1)insight will (C2)shine like the glow of the (F2)expanse of heaven, and those who (F3)(C3)lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.4 "But as for you, Daniel, (C1)keep these words secret and (C2)seal up the book until the (C3)end of time; (C4)many will roam about, and knowledge will increase."
5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others were standing, one on this bank of the stream and the other on that bank of the stream.6 And (C1)someone said to the man (C2)dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, "(C3)How long will it be until the end of these wonders?"7 And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, (F1)as he (C1)raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by (C2)Him who lives forever that it would be for a (F2)(C3)time, (F2)times, and half a (F2)time; and as soon as (F3)they finish (C4)smashing the (F4)power of the holy people, all these events will be completed.8 But as for me, I heard but did not understand; so I said, "My lord, what will be the (F1)outcome of these events?"9 And he said, "Go your way, Daniel, for these words will be kept secret and (C1)sealed up until the end time.10 "(C1)Many will be purged, (F1)cleansed, and refined, but the (C2)wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but (F2)those who (C3)have insight will understand.11 "And from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the (C1)abomination (F1)of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.12 "(C1)Blessed is the one who is patient and attains to the (C2)1,335 days!13 "But as for you, go your way to the (F1)end; then you will (C1)rest and (F2)rise for your (C2)allotted portion at the end of the (F3)age."
Mark 8:1-21
Chapter 8
Four Thousand Men Fed
1 In those days, (C1)when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned His disciples and (*)said to them,2 "(C1)I feel compassion for the (F1)people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat.3 "And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance."4 And His disciples replied to Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough (F1)bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?"5 And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."6 And He (*)directed the (F1)people to recline on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve, and they served them to the (F1)people.7 They also had a few small fish; and (C1)after He had blessed them, He told the disciples to serve these as well.8 And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large (C1)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.9 About four thousand (F1)men were there; and He dismissed them.10 And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of (C1)Dalmanutha.
11 (C1)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, (C2)demanding from Him a (F1)sign from heaven, (F2)to test Him.12 (C1)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He (*)said, "Why does this generation demand a (F1)sign? Truly I say to you, (F2)(C2)no (F1)sign will be given to this generation!"13 And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.
14 And the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.15 And He was giving orders to them, saying, "(C1)Watch out! Beware of the (F1)leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of (C2)Herod."16 And they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.17 And Jesus, aware of this, (*)said to them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (C1)Do you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart (F1)hardened?18 "(C1)HAVING EYES, DO YOU NOT SEE? AND HAVING EARS, DO YOU NOT HEAR? And do you not remember,19 when I broke (C1)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many (C2)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?" They (*)said to Him, "Twelve."20 "When I broke (C1)the seven for the four thousand, how many large (C2)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?" And they (*)said to Him, "Seven."21 And He was saying to them, "(C1)Do you not yet understand?"<
