1 Samuel 29-31

Chapter 29

The Philistines Mistrust David

1 Now (C1)the Philistines gathered together all their armies to (C2)Aphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in (C3)Jezreel.2 And the governors of the Philistines were proceeding on, leading hundreds and thousands, and (C1)David and his men were proceeding in the back with Achish.3 Then the commanders of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, "Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, (C1)who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and (C2)I have found nothing at all suspicious in him since the day he (F1)deserted to me to this day?"4 But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, "Make the man go back, so that he will return (C1)to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, (C2)or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For how could this man find favor with his lord? Would it not be with the heads of (F1)these men?5 "Is this not David, (C1)of whom they sing in the dances, saying,

'Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands'?"

6 Then Achish called David and said to him, "As the LORD lives, you have indeed been honest, and (C1)your (F1)going out and your coming in with me in the army are pleasing in my sight; (C2)for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing in the sight of the governors.7 "Now then, return and go in peace, so that you will not do anything wrong in the sight of the governors of the Philistines."8 However, David said to Achish, "(C1)But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant since the day that I came before you, to this day, that I cannot go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?"9 But Achish replied to David, "I know that you are pleasing in my sight, (C1)like an angel of God; nevertheless (C2)the commanders of the Philistines have said, 'He must not go up with us into the battle.'10 "Now then, rise early in the morning (C1)with the servants of your lord who have come with you, and as soon as you have risen early in the morning and have light, leave."11 So David got up early, he and his men, to leave in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Chapter 30

David's Victory over the Amalekites

1 Then it happened, when David and his men came to (C1)Ziklag on the third day, that (C2)the Amalekites had carried out an attack on the (F1)Negev and on (C3)Ziklag, and had (F2)overthrown Ziklag and burned it with fire;2 and they took captive the women and all who were in it, from the small to the great, (F1)(C1)without killing anyone, and drove them off and went their way.3 When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.4 Then David and the people who were with him (C1)raised their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.5 Now (C1)David's two wives had been taken captive, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the (F1)widow of Nabal the Carmelite.6 Also, David was in great distress because (C1)the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were (F1)embittered, each one because of his sons and his daughters. But (C2)David felt strengthened in the LORD his God.

7 Then (C1)David said to (C2)Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.8 And (C1)David inquired of the LORD, saying, "(C2)Shall I pursue this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?" And He said to him, "Pursue, for you will certainly overtake them, (C3)and you will certainly rescue everyone."9 So David left, (C1)he and the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the brook Besor, where some who were left behind stayed.10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men, for (C1)two hundred who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor stayed behind.

11 Now they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David, and gave him bread and he ate, and they provided him water to drink.12 They also gave him a slice of fig cake and two cakes of raisins, and he ate; (C1)then his spirit (F1)revived. For he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.13 Then David said to him, "To whom do you belong? And where are you from?" And he said, "I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite; and my master abandoned me when I became sick three days ago.14 "We carried out an attack on (C1)the (F1)Negev of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on (C2)the (F1)Negev of Caleb, and (C3)we burned Ziklag with fire."15 Then David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this band of raiders?" And he said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will bring you down to this band."

16 Now when he had brought him down, behold, they were dispersed over all the land, (C1)eating and drinking and celebrating because of (C2)all the great plunder that they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah.17 And David (F1)slaughtered them (C1)from the twilight (F2)until the evening of (F3)the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on (C2)camels and fled.18 So David (C1)recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and (F1)rescued his two wives.19 And nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, plunder, or anything that they had taken for themselves; (C1)David brought it all back.20 So David had (F1)captured all the sheep and the cattle which the people drove ahead of (F2)the other livestock, and they said, "(C1)This is David's plunder."

The Plunder Is Divided

21 When (C1)David came to the two hundred men who were too exhausted to follow David and (F1)had been left behind at the brook Besor, and they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him, then David approached the people and greeted them.22 Then all the wicked and (F1)worthless men among those who went with David said, "Since they did not go with (F2)us, we will not give them any of the spoils that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, so that they may lead them away and leave."23 But David said, "You must not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us, for He has protected us and handed over to us the band of raiders that came against us.24 "And who will listen to you in this matter? For (C1)as is the share of the one who goes down into the battle, so shall be the share of the one who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike."25 So it has been from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

26 Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the spoils to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, "Behold, (C1)a (F1)gift for you from the spoils of (C2)the enemies of the LORD:27 to those who were in (C1)Bethel, to those who were in (C2)Ramoth of the (F1)Negev, to those who were in (C3)Jattir,28 to those who were in (C1)Aroer, to those who were in Siphmoth, to those who were in (C2)Eshtemoa,29 to those who were in Racal, to those who were in the cities of (C1)the Jerahmeelites, to those who were in the cities of (C2)the Kenites,30 to those who were in (C1)Hormah, to those who were in (C2)Bor-ashan, to those who were in Athach,31 to those who were in (C1)Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men (C2)walked."

Chapter 31

Saul and His Sons Killed in Battle

1 (C1)Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from the Philistines but fell fatally wounded (C2)on Mount Gilboa.2 And the Philistines also overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines (F1)killed (C1)Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.3 (C1)The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers found him; and he was gravely wounded by the archers.4 (C1)Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise (C2)these uncircumcised Philistines will come and pierce me through, and abuse me." But his armor bearer was unwilling, because he was very fearful. (C3)So Saul took (F1)his sword and fell on it.5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.6 So Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together.

7 Now when the people of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; then the Philistines came and settled in them.

8 It came about on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip those killed, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9 They cut off his head and stripped off his weapons, and sent them (F1)throughout the land of the Philistines, (C1)to bring the good news (C2)to the house of their idols and to the people.10 They put his weapons in the (F1)temple of (C1)Ashtaroth, and (C2)they nailed his body to the wall of (C3)Beth-shan.11 Now when (C1)the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard (F1)what the Philistines had done to Saul,12 (C1)all the valiant men got up and walked all night, and they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and (C2)burned them there.13 And they took their bones and (C1)buried them under (C2)the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and (C3)fasted for seven days.

Psalms 71

Chapter 71

Prayer of an Old Man for Rescue.

1 (C1)In You, LORD, I have taken refuge;
Let me never be put to shame.

2 (C1)In Your righteousness rescue me and save me;
(C2)Extend Your ear to me and help me.

3 (C1)Be to me a rock of (C2)dwelling to which I may continually come;
You have given the (C3)commandment to save me,
For You are (C4)my rock and my fortress.

4 (C1)Save me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
From the (F1)grasp of the wrongdoer and the ruthless,

5 For You are my (C1)hope;
Lord (F1)GOD, You are my (C2)confidence from my youth.

6 I have (C1)leaned on You since my birth;
You are He who (C2)took me from my mother's womb;
My (C3)praise is continually (F1)of You.

7 I have become a (C1)marvel to many,
For You are (C2)my strong refuge.

8 My (C1)mouth is filled with Your praise
And with (C2)Your glory all day long.

9 Do not cast me away at the (C1)time of my old age;
Do not abandon me when my strength fails.

10 For my enemies have spoken (F1)against me;
And those who (C1)watch for my (F2)life (C2)have consulted together,

11 Saying, "(C1)God has abandoned him;
Pursue and seize him, for there is (C2)no one to save him."

12 God, (C1)do not be far from me;
My God, (C2)hurry to my aid!

13 May those who are enemies of my soul be (C1)put to shame and consumed;
May they be (C2)covered with disgrace and dishonor, who (C3)seek (F1)to injure me.

14 But as for me, I will (C1)wait continually,
And will (F1)(C2)praise You yet more and more.

15 My (C1)mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And of (C2)Your salvation all day long;
For I (C3)do not know the art of writing.

16 I will come (C1)with the mighty deeds of the Lord (F1)GOD;
I will (C2)make mention of Your righteousness, Yours alone.

17 God, You (C1)have taught me from my youth,
And I still (C2)declare Your wondrous deeds.

18 And even when I am (C1)old and gray, God, do not abandon me,
Until I (C2)declare Your (F1)strength to this generation,
Your power to all who are to come.

19 (F1)For Your (C1)righteousness, God, reaches to the (F2)heavens,
You who have (C2)done great things;
God, (C3)who is like You?

20 You who have (C1)shown (F1)me many troubles and distresses
Will (C2)revive (F1)me again,
And will bring (F1)me up again (C3)from the depths of the earth.

21 May You increase my (C1)greatness
And turn to (C2)comfort me.

22 I will also praise You with (F1)(C1)a harp,
And Your (F2)truth, my God;
I will sing praises to You with the (C2)lyre,
(C3)Holy One of Israel.

23 My lips will (C1)shout for joy when I sing praises to You;
And my (C2)soul, which You have redeemed.

24 My (C1)tongue also will tell of Your righteousness all day long;
For they are (C2)put to shame, for they are humiliated who seek (F1)my harm.

Romans 15:14-33

Chapter 15

14 And concerning you, my brothers and sisters, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of (C1)goodness, filled with (C2)all knowledge and able also to admonish one another.15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (C1)the grace that was given to me (F1)from God,16 to be (C1)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (C2)gospel of God, so that my (C3)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found (C1)reason for boasting in (C2)things pertaining to God.18 (C1)For I will not presume to speak of anything (F1)except what (C2)Christ has accomplished through me, (F2)resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed,19 in the power of (F1)(C1)signs and wonders, (C2)in the power of the Spirit; so that (C3)from Jerusalem and all around as (C4)far as Illyricum I have (F2)fully preached the gospel of Christ.20 And in this way I aspired to (C1)preach the gospel, not where Christ was already known by name, (C2)so that I would not build on another person's foundation;21 but just as it is written:

"(C1)THEY WHO HAVE NOT BEEN TOLD ABOUT HIM WILL SEE,
AND THEY WHO HAVE NOT HEARD WILL UNDERSTAND."

22 For this reason (C1)I have often been prevented from coming to you;23 but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I (C1)have had for many years a longing to come to you24 whenever I (C1)go to Spain—for I hope to see you in passing, and to be (C2)helped on my way there by you, when I have first (C3)enjoyed your company (F1)for a while—25 but now, (C1)I am going to Jerusalem, (C2)serving the (F1)saints.26 For (C1)Macedonia and (C2)Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the (F1)saints in Jerusalem.27 For they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For (C1)if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to do them a service also in material things.28 Therefore, when I have finished this, and (C1)have (F1)put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will (C2)go on by way of you to Spain.29 I know that when (C1)I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ.

30 Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by (C1)the love of the Spirit, to (C2)strive together with me in your prayers to God for me,31 that I may be (C1)rescued from those who are disobedient in Judea, and that my (C2)service for Jerusalem may prove acceptable to the (F1)(C3)saints;32 so that (C1)I may come to you in joy by (C2)the will of God and relax in your company.33 Now (C1)the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
