Solomon's Rule Consolidated
1 Now (C1)Solomon (F1)formed a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter (C2)and brought her to the city of David (C3)until he had finished building his own house and the house of the LORD, and (C4)the wall around Jerusalem.2 (C1)The people were still sacrificing on the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the LORD until those days.
3 Now (C1)Solomon loved the LORD, (C2)walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he was sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.4 And (C1)the king went to (C2)Gibeon to sacrifice there, (C3)because that was the great high place; Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.5 (C1)In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon (C2)in a dream at night; and God said, "(C3)Ask what you wish Me to give you."
Solomon's Prayer
6 Then Solomon said, "(C1)You have shown great faithfulness to Your servant David my father, (C2)according as he walked before You in (F1)truth, righteousness, and uprightness of heart toward You; and (C3)You have (F2)reserved for him this great faithfulness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.7 "And now, LORD my God, (C1)You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet (C2)I am like a little boy; (C3)I do not know how to (F1)go out or come in.8 "And (C1)Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, (C2)a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted.9 "So (C1)give Your servant (F1)an understanding heart to judge Your people, (C2)to discern between good and evil. For who is capable of judging this (F2)great people of Yours?"God's Answer
10 Now (F1)it was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing.11 And God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing, and have (C1)not asked for yourself (F1)a long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to understand justice,12 behold, (C1)I have done according to your words. Behold, (C2)I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you.13 "(C1)I have also given you what you have not asked, both (C2)riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days.14 "And (C1)if you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will (C2)prolong your days."
15 Then (C1)Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and made peace offerings, and (C2)held a feast for all his servants.
Solomon Wisely Judges
16 Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.17 The one woman said, "Pardon me, my lord: (F1)this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth to a child (F2)while she was in the house.18 "And it happened on the third day after I gave birth, that this woman also gave birth to a child, and we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, only the two of us in the house.19 "Then this woman's son died in the night, because she lay on him.20 "So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast.21 "When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead! But when I examined him closely in the morning, behold, he was not my son, whom I had borne!"22 Then the other woman said, "No! For the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son." But (F1)the first woman said, "No! For the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son." So they spoke before the king.
23 Then the king said, "(F1)The one says, 'This is my son who is living, and your son is the dead one'; and (F1)the other says, 'No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.'"24 And the king said, "Get me a sword." So they brought a sword before the king.25 And the king said, "Cut the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other."26 But the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for (F1)(C1)she was deeply stirred over her son, and she said, "Pardon me, my lord! Give her the living child, and by no means kill him!" But the other woman was saying, "He shall be neither mine nor yours; cut him!"27 Then the king replied, "Give (F1)the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother."28 When all Israel heard about the judgment which the king had (F1)handed down, they feared the king, because (C1)they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to (F2)administer justice.
Solomon's Officials
1 Now King Solomon was king over all Israel.2 These were his officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was (C1)the priest;3 Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha were scribes; (C1)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the secretary;4 and (C1)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the army; and Zadok and (C2)Abiathar were priests;5 and Azariah the son of Nathan was over (C1)the deputies; and Zabud the son of Nathan, a priest, was the king's confidant;6 and Ahishar was over the household; and Adoniram the son of Abda was over the forced labor.
7 Solomon had twelve deputies over all Israel, who provided food for the king and his household; each deputy had to provide food for a month in the year.8 And these were their names: Ben-hur, in the (C1)hill country of Ephraim;9 Ben-deker in Makaz and (C1)Shaalbim, and (C2)Beth-shemesh, and Elonbeth-hanan;10 Ben-hesed in Arubboth ((C1)Socoh was his and all the land of (C2)Hepher);11 Ben-abinadab in all (F1)the (C1)hills of Dor (Taphath the daughter of Solomon was his wife);12 Baana the son of Ahilud in (C1)Taanach and Megiddo, and all (C2)Beth-shean which is beside (C3)Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth-shean to (C4)Abel-meholah as far as the other side of (C5)Jokmeam;13 Ben-geber in (C1)Ramoth-gilead ((C2)the villages of Jair, the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead were his: (C3)the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls and bronze bars were his);14 Ahinadab the son of Iddo in (C1)Mahanaim;15 (C1)Ahimaaz in Naphtali (he also married Basemath the daughter of Solomon);16 Baana the son of (C1)Hushai in Asher and (F1)Bealoth;17 Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah in Issachar;18 (C1)Shimei the son of Ela in Benjamin;19 Geber the son of Uri in the land of Gilead, (C1)the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and he was the only deputy who was in the land.
Solomon's Power, Wealth, and Wisdom
20 (C1)Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand that is on the (F1)seashore in abundance; they were eating, drinking, and rejoicing.
21 (F1)(C1)Now Solomon was ruling over all the kingdoms (C2)from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; (C3)they brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.
22 Solomon's (F1)provision for one day was (F2)thirty kors of fine flour and (F3)sixty kors of meal,23 ten fat oxen, twenty (F1)pasture-fed oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides deer, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened geese.24 For he was ruling over everything (F1)west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah even to (C1)Gaza, (C2)over all the kings (F1)west of the River; and (C3)he had peace on all sides surrounding him.25 (C1)So Judah and Israel lived securely, everyone under his vine and his fig tree, (C2)from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.26 (C1)Solomon had (F1)forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.27 And those deputies provided food for King Solomon and all who came to King Solomon's table, each in his month; they allowed nothing to be lacking.28 They also brought barley and straw for the war horses and (C1)baggage horses to the place where it was required, each deputy according to his duty.
29 Now (C1)God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of (F1)mind, (C2)like the sand that is on the seashore.30 Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all (C1)the (F1)people of the east and (C2)all the wisdom of Egypt.31 For (C1)he was wiser than all other people, more than (C2)Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, (C3)Calcol, and (F1)Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his (F2)fame was known in all the surrounding nations.32 (C1)He also told three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered 1,005.33 He told of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that grows on the wall; he told also of animals, birds, crawling things, and fish.34 People (C1)came from all the (F1)nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.
Proverbs 1
Chapter 1
The Usefulness of Proverbs
1 The (C1)proverbs of Solomon (C2)the son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know (C1)wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of (C2)understanding,
3 To (C1)receive instruction in wise behavior,
(C2)Righteousness, justice, and integrity;
4 To give (C1)prudence to the naive,
To the youth (C2)knowledge and discretion,
5 A wise person will hear and (C1)increase in learning,
And a (C2)person of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
6 To understand a proverb and a saying,
The words of the wise and their (C1)riddles.
7 (C1)The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The Enticement of Sinners
8 (C1)Listen, my son, to your father's instruction,
And (C2)do not ignore your mother's teaching;
9 For they are a (C1)graceful wreath for your head
And (C2)necklaces for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners (C1)entice you,
(C2)Do not consent.
11 If they say, "Come with us,
Let's (C1)lie in wait for blood,
Let's (C2)ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let's (C1)swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, like those who (C2)go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with plunder;
14 Throw in your lot (F1)with us;
We will all have one money bag,"
15 My son, (C1)do not walk on the way with them.
(C2)Keep your feet from their path,
16 For (C1)their feet run to evil,
And they are quick to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is (F1)useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any (F2)bird;
18 But they (C1)lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who (C1)makes unjust gain;
It takes away the life of its possessors.
Wisdom Warns
20 (C1)Wisdom shouts in the street,
She (F1)raises her voice in the public square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she declares her sayings:
22 "How long, you (C1)naive ones, will you love simplistic thinking?
And how long will (C2)scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools (C3)hate knowledge?
23 "Turn to my rebuke,
Behold, I will (C1)pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 "Because (C1)I called and you (C2)refused,
I (C3)stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
25 And you (C1)neglected all my advice
And did not (C2)want my rebuke;
26 I will also (C1)laugh at your (C2)disaster;
I will mock when your (C3)dread comes,
27 When your dread comes like a storm
And your disaster comes like a (C1)whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 "Then they will (C1)call on me, but I will not answer;
They will (C2)seek me diligently but will not find me,
29 Because they (C1)hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the LORD.
30 "They (C1)did not accept my advice,
They disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me.
31 "So they shall (C1)eat of the fruit of their own way,
And be (C2)filled with their own schemes.
32 "For the (C1)faithlessness of the naive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 "But (C1)whoever listens to me will live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil."
John 19:1-22
Chapter 19
The Crown of Thorns
1 So Pilate then took Jesus and (F1)(C1)had Him flogged.2 (C1)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head, and put a purple (F1)cloak on Him;3 and they repeatedly came up to Him and said, "(C1)Hail, King of the Jews!" and (C2)slapped Him in the face again and again.4 And then Pilate (C1)came out again and (*)said to them, "See, I am bringing Him out to you so that you will know that (C2)I find no grounds at all for charges in (F1)His case."5 Jesus then came out, (C1)wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate (*)said to them, "Behold, the Man!"6 So when the chief priests and the (C1)officers saw Him, they shouted, saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate (*)said to them, "Take Him yourselves and crucify Him; for (C2)I find no grounds for charges in (F1)His case!"7 The Jews answered him, "(C1)We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He (C2)made Himself out to be the Son of God!"
8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;9 and he (C1)entered the (F1)Praetorium again and (*)said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But (C2)Jesus gave him no answer.10 So Pilate (*)said to Him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?"11 Jesus answered him, "(C1)You would have no authority (F1)over Me at all, if it had not been given to you from above; for this reason (C2)the one who handed Me over to you has the greater sin."12 As a result of this, Pilate (F1)made efforts to release Him; but the Jews shouted, saying, "(C1)If you release this Man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king (F2)opposes Caesar!"
13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and (C1)sat down on the judgment seat at a place called (F1)The Pavement—but (C2)in (F2)Hebrew, Gabbatha.14 Now it was (C1)the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the (F1)(C2)sixth hour. And he (*)said to the Jews, "Look, (C3)your King!"15 So they shouted, "(C1)Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilate (*)said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king except Caesar."
The Crucifixion
16 So he then (C1)handed Him over to them to be crucified.17 (C1)They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, (F1)(C2)carrying His own cross, to the place called (C3)the Place of a Skull, which (C4)in (F2)Hebrew is called, Golgotha.18 There they crucified Him, and with Him (C1)two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.19 Now Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written: "(C1)JESUS THE NAZARENE, (C2)THE KING OF THE JEWS."20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written (C1)in (F1)Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek.21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '(C1)The King of the Jews'; rather, write that He said, 'I am (C1)King of the Jews.'"22 Pilate answered, "(C1)What I have written, I have written."<
