1 Samuel 10:17-11:15

Chapter 10

17 Now Samuel called the (C1)people together to the LORD at Mizpah;18 and he said to the sons of Israel, "(C1)This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: 'I brought Israel up from Egypt, and I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the (F1)power of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.'19 "But today you (C1)have rejected your God, who saves you from all your catastrophes and your distresses; yet you have (F1)said, 'No, but put a king over us!' Now then, (C2)present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your (F2)groups of thousands."

20 So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel forward; and the tribe of Benjamin was selected by lot.21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin forward by its families, and the Matrite family was selected by lot. And Saul the son of Kish was selected by lot; but when they looked for him, he could not be found.22 Therefore (C1)they inquired further of the LORD: "Has the man come here yet?" And the LORD said, "Behold, he is hiding himself among the baggage."23 So they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, (C1)he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward.24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him (C1)whom the LORD has chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people." So all the people shouted and said, "(F1)(C2)Long live the king!"

25 Then Samuel told the people (C1)the ordinances of the kingdom, and wrote them in the book, and (C2)placed it before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house.26 Saul also went (C1)to his house in Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him.27 But certain (F1)(C1)useless men said, "How can this one save us?" And they despised him and (C2)did not bring him a gift. But (F2)he kept silent about it.

Chapter 11

Saul Defeats the Ammonites

1 Now (C1)Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged (C2)Jabesh-gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make (C3)a covenant with us and we will serve you."2 But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "I will make it with you on this condition, (C1)that I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you, and thereby I will inflict (C2)a disgrace on all Israel."3 So (C1)the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Allow us seven days to send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you."4 Then the messengers came (C1)to Gibeah of Saul and spoke these words in the hearing of the people, and all the people (C2)raised their voices and wept.

5 Now behold, Saul was coming from the field (C1)behind the oxen, and Saul said, "What is the matter with the people that they weep?" So they reported to him the words of the men of Jabesh.6 Then (C1)the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and (F1)he became very angry.7 He then took a yoke of oxen and (C1)cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "(C2)Whoever does not come out after Saul and after Samuel, the same shall be done to his oxen." Then the dread of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out (C3)as one person.8 He (F1)counted them in (C1)Bezek; and the (C2)sons of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah, thirty thousand.9 They said to the messengers who had come, "This is what you shall say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be saved.'" So the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh; and they rejoiced.10 Then the men of Jabesh said, "(C1)Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good (F1)to you."11 The next morning Saul put the people (C1)in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp at the morning watch, and struck and killed the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

12 Then the people said to Samuel, "(C1)Who is he that said, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' (F1)(C2)Bring the men, so that we may put them to death!"13 But Saul said, "(C1)Not a single person shall be put to death this day, for today (C2)the LORD has brought about (F1)victory in Israel."

14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, and let us go to (C1)Gilgal and (C2)renew the kingdom there."15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king (C1)before the LORD in Gilgal. There they also (C2)offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Psalms 56

Chapter 56

Pleading for Help and Grateful Trust in God.

For the music director; according to (FA)Jonath elem rehokim. A (FB)Mikhtam of David, (FC)when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

1 Be gracious to me, God, for a man has (F1)(C1)trampled upon me;
(F2)Fighting all day long he (C2)oppresses me.

2 My enemies have (C1)trampled upon me all day long,
For (F1)they are many who (C2)fight proudly against me.

3 (F1)When I am (C1)afraid,
(F2)I will (C2)put my trust in You.

4 (C1)In God, whose word I praise,
In God I have put my trust;
I shall not be afraid.
(C2)What can mere (F1)mortals do to me?

5 All day long they (C1)distort my words;
All their (F1)(C2)thoughts are against me for evil.

6 They (F1)(C1)attack, they lurk,
They (C2)watch my (F2)steps,
As they have (C3)waited to take my (F3)life.

7 Because of their wickedness, will there be an (C1)escape for them?
In anger (C2)make the peoples fall down, God!

8 You (C1)have taken account of my (F1)miseries;
Put my (C2)tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in (C3)Your book?

9 Then my enemies will (C1)turn back (C2)on the day when I call;
This I know, (F1)that (C3)God is for me.

10 In God, whose word I praise,
In the LORD, whose word I praise,

11 In God I have put my (F1)trust, I shall not be afraid.
What can mankind do to me?

12 Your (C1)vows are binding upon me, God;
I will render thanksgiving offerings to You.

13 For You have (C1)saved my soul from death,
(F1)Indeed (C2)my feet from stumbling,
So that I may (C3)walk before God
In the (C4)light of the (F2)living.

Romans 2:1-3:8

Chapter 2

The Impartiality of God

1 Therefore you have (C1)no excuse, (F1)you foolish person, (C2)everyone of you who passes judgment; for (F2)in that matter in which (C3)you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.2 And we know that the judgment of God (F1)rightly falls upon those who practice such things.3 But do you suppose this, (F1)(C1)you foolish person who passes judgment on those who practice such things, and yet does them as well, that you will escape the judgment of God?4 Or do you think lightly of (C1)the riches of His (C2)kindness and (F1)(C3)restraint and (C4)patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?5 But (F1)because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart (C1)you are storing up wrath for yourself (C2)on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,6 (C1)who WILL REPAY EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS:7 to those who by (C1)perseverance in doing good seek (C2)glory, honor, and (C3)immortality, He will give (C4)eternal life;8 but to those who are (C1)self-serving and (C2)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, He will give wrath and indignation.9 There will be (C1)tribulation and distress (F1)for every soul of mankind who does evil, (F2)for the Jew (C2)first and also (F2)for the Greek,10 but (C1)glory, honor, and peace to everyone who does what is good, to the Jew (C2)first and also to the Greek.11 For (C1)there is no partiality with God.

12 For all who have sinned (F1)(C1)without the Law will also perish (F1)without the Law, and all who have sinned (F2)under the Law will be judged (F3)by the Law;13 for it is (C1)not the hearers (F1)of the Law who are (F2)righteous before God, but the doers (F1)of the Law who will be justified.14 For when Gentiles who do not have (F1)the Law (F2)(C1)instinctively perform the requirements of the Law, these, though not having (F1)the Law, are a law to themselves,15 in that they show (C1)the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,16 on the day when, (C1)according to my gospel, (C2)God will judge the secrets of mankind through Christ Jesus.

The Jews under the Law

17 But if you call yourself a (F1)Jew and (C1)rely (F2)upon the Law and boast in God,18 and know His will and (F1)(C1)distinguish the things that matter, being instructed from the Law,19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness,20 a (F1)corrector of the foolish, a teacher of (F2)the immature, possessing in the Law (C1)the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth—21 you, therefore, (C1)who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who (F1)preach that one is not to steal, do you steal?22 You who say that one is not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who loathe idols, do you (C1)rob temples?23 You who (C1)boast (F1)in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God?24 For "(C1)THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES (C2)BECAUSE OF YOU," just as it is written.

25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you (C1)practice (F1)the Law; but if you are a violator (F2)of the Law, (C2)your circumcision has turned into uncircumcision.26 (C1)So if (C2)the (F1)uncircumcised man (C3)keeps the requirements of the Law, will his uncircumcision not be regarded as circumcision?27 And (C1)he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not (C2)judge you who (F1)though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a violator (F2)of the Law?28 For (C1)he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.29 But (C1)he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and (C2)circumcision is of the heart, by the (C3)Spirit, not by the letter; (C4)and his praise is not from people, but from God.

Chapter 3

All the World Guilty

1 Then what (F1)advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?2 Great in every respect. First, that (C1)they were entrusted with the (C2)actual words of God.3 What then? If (C1)some (F1)did not believe, their (F2)unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?4 (F1)(C1)Far from it! Rather, God must prove to be true, though every person be found (C2)a liar, as it is written:

"(C3)SO THAT YOU ARE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS,
AND PREVAIL (F2)WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."

5 But if our unrighteousness (F1)(C1)demonstrates the righteousness of God, (C2)what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? ((C3)I am speaking from a human viewpoint.)6 (C1)Far from it! For otherwise, how will (C2)God judge the world?7 But if through my lie (C1)the truth of God abounded to His glory, (C2)why am I also still being judged as a sinner?8 And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), "(C1)Let's do evil that good may come of it"? (F1)Their condemnation is deserved.<
