1 Samuel 9:1-10:16

Chapter 9

Saul's Search

1 Now there was a man of Benjamin whose name was (C1)Kish the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite, a (F1)valiant mighty man.2 He had a son whose name was Saul, a (C1)young and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome man than he among the sons of Israel; (C2)from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.

3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, had wandered off. So Kish said to his son Saul, "Now take with you one of the servants and arise, go search for the donkeys."4 So he passed through (C1)the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of (C2)Shalishah, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of (C3)Shaalim, but they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjaminites, but they did not find them.

5 When they came to the land of (C1)Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, "Come, and let's return, (C2)or else my father will stop being concerned about the donkeys and will become anxious about us."6 But he said to him, "Behold now, there is (C1)a man of God in this city, and the man is held in honor; (C2)everything that he says definitely comes true. Now let's go there, (C3)perhaps he can tell us about our journey on which we have set out."7 Then Saul said to his servant, "But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is gone from our sacks and there is (C1)no gift to bring to the man of God. What do we have?"8 The servant answered Saul again and said, "Look, I have in my hand a fourth of a shekel of silver; I will give it to the man of God and he will (C1)tell us our way."9 (Previously in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he used to say, "Come, and let's go to the seer"; for he who is called a prophet now was previously called (C1)a seer.)10 Then Saul said to his servant, "(F1)Good idea; come, let's go." So they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 As they went up the slope to the city, (C1)they found young women going out to draw water, and they said to them, "Is the seer here?"12 They answered them and said, "He is; (F1)see, he is ahead of you. Hurry now, for he has come into the city today, because (C1)the people have a sacrifice on (C2)the high place today.13 "As soon as you enter the city you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he comes, because (C1)he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now then, go up, for you will find him about this time."14 So they went up to the city. As they came into the city, behold, Samuel was coming out toward them to go up to the high place.

God's Choice for King

15 Now a day before Saul's coming, (C1)the LORD had (F1)revealed this to Samuel, saying,16 "About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and (C1)you shall anoint him as ruler over My people Israel; and he will save My people from the hand of the Philistines. For (C2)I have considered My people, because their outcry has come to Me."17 When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD (F1)said to him, "(C1)Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! This one shall rule over My people."18 Then Saul approached Samuel at the gateway and said, "Please tell me where the seer's house is."19 And Samuel answered Saul and said, "I am the seer. Go up ahead of me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and in the morning I will let you go, and will tell you everything that is on your mind.20 "(C1)And as for your donkeys that wandered off three days ago, do not be concerned about them, for they have been found. And (C2)for whom is everything that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father's household?"21 Saul replied, "(C1)Am I not a Benjaminite, of (C2)the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the (F1)tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?"

22 Then Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and gave them a place at the head of those who were invited, who were about thirty men.23 And Samuel said to the cook, "(F1)Serve the portion that I gave you about which I said to you, 'Set it (F2)aside.'"24 Then the cook (C1)took up the leg with what was on it and placed it before Saul. And Samuel said, "Here is what has been reserved! Place it before you and eat, because it has been kept for you until the appointed time, (F1)since I said I have invited the people." So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 When they came down from the high place into the city, (F1)Samuel spoke with Saul (C1)on the roof.26 And they got up early; and at daybreak Samuel called to Saul on the roof, saying, "Get up, so that I may send you on your way." So Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.27 As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, "Speak to the servant and have him go on ahead of us and pass by; but you stand here now, so that I may proclaim the word of God to you."

Chapter 10

Saul among the Prophets

1 Then (C1)Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on (F1)Saul's head, (C2)kissed him, and said, "Has (C3)the LORD not anointed you as ruler over (C4)His inheritance?2 "When you leave me today, then you will find two men close to (C1)Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to you, '(C2)The donkeys which you went to look for have been found. Now behold, your father has stopped talking about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, "What am I to do about my son?"'3 "Then you will go on farther from there, and you will come as far as the (F1)(C1)oak of Tabor, and there three men going up (C2)to God at Bethel will meet you: one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a jug of wine.4 And they will (F1)greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from their hand.5 "Afterward you will come to (F1)(C1)the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet (C2)a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre in front of them, and (C3)they will be prophesying.6 "Then (C1)the Spirit of the LORD will rush upon you, and (C2)you will prophesy with them and be changed into a different man.7 "And it shall be when these signs come to you, (C1)do for yourself what (F1)the occasion requires, because (C2)God is with you.8 "And (C1)you shall go down ahead of me to Gilgal; and behold, I will be coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and (C2)sacrifice peace offerings. (C3)You shall wait seven days until I come to you and inform you of what you should do."

9 Then it happened, when he turned his back to leave Samuel, that God (C1)changed (F1)his heart; and all those signs came about on that day.10 (C1)When they came there to (F1)the hill, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, so that he prophesied among them.11 And it came about, when all who previously knew him saw that he was indeed prophesying with the prophets, that the people said to one another, "What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? (C1)Is Saul also among the prophets?"12 And a man from there responded and said, "And who is their father?" Therefore it became a saying: "(C1)Is Saul also among the prophets?"13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.

14 Now (C1)Saul's uncle said to him and his servant, "Where did you go?" And he said, "(C2)To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they were nowhere to be found, we went to Samuel."15 Saul's uncle said, "Please tell me what Samuel said to you."16 So Saul said to his uncle, "(C1)He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found." But he did not tell him about the matter of the kingdom which Samuel had mentioned.<

Psalms 55

Chapter 55

Prayer for the Destruction of the Treacherous.

For the music director; on stringed instruments. A (FA)Maskil of David.

1 (C1)Listen to my prayer, God;
And (C2)do not hide Yourself from my pleading.

2 Give Your (C1)attention to me and answer me;
I am restless in my (C2)complaint and (F1)(C3)severely distracted,

3 Because of the voice of the enemy,
Because of the (C1)pressure of the wicked;
For they (C2)bring down (F1)trouble upon me
And in anger they (C3)hold a grudge against me.

4 My (C1)heart is in anguish within me,
And the terrors of (C2)death have fallen upon me.

5 Fear and (C1)trembling come upon me,
And (F1)(C2)horror has (F2)overwhelmed me.

6 I said, "Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and (F1)(C1)be at rest.

7 "Behold, I would flee far away,
I would (C1)spend my nights in the wilderness. Selah

8 "I would hurry to my place of refuge
From the (C1)stormy wind and heavy gale."

9 Confuse them, Lord, (C1)divide their tongues,
For I have seen (C2)violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night they go around her upon her walls,
And evil and harm are in her midst.

11 (C1)Destruction is in her midst;
(C2)Oppression and deceit do not depart from her (F1)streets.

12 For it is (C1)not an enemy who taunts me,
Then I could endure it;
Nor is it one who hates me who (C2)has exalted himself against me,
Then I could hide myself from him.

13 But it is you, a man (F1)my equal,
My (C1)companion and my (C2)confidant;

14 We who had sweet (F1)fellowship together,
(C1)Walked in the house of God among the commotion.

15 May (F1)death come (C1)deceitfully upon them;
May they (C2)go down alive to (F2)Sheol,
For evil is in their dwelling, in their midst.

16 As for me, I shall (C1)call upon God,
And the LORD will save me.

17 (C1)Evening and (C2)morning and at (C3)noon, I will complain and moan,
And He will hear my voice.

18 He will (C1)redeem my soul in peace (F1)from the battle which is against me,
For they are (C2)many who are aggressive toward me.

19 God will (C1)hear and humiliate them—
Even the One (C2)who (F1)sits enthroned from ancient times— Selah
With whom there (F2)is no change,
And who (C3)do not fear God.

20 He has put forth his hands against (C1)those who were at peace with him;
He has (F1)(C2)violated his covenant.

21 His (F1)speech was (C1)smoother than butter,
But his heart was war;
His words were (C1)softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn (C2)swords.

22 (C1)Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;
(C2)He will never allow the righteous to (F1)(C3)be shaken.

23 But You, God, will bring them down to the (C1)pit of destruction;
(C2)Men of bloodshed and deceit will (C3)not live out half their days.
But I will (C4)trust in You.

Romans 1:16-32

Chapter 1

16 For I am not (C1)ashamed of the gospel, for (C2)it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the (C3)Jew first and also to (C4)the Greek.17 For in it (C1)the righteousness of God is revealed (F1)from faith to faith; as it is written: "(F2)(C2)BUT THE RIGHTEOUS ONE WILL LIVE BY FAITH."

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18 For (C1)the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who (C2)suppress the truth (F1)in unrighteousness,19 because (C1)that which is known about God is evident (F1)within them; for God made it evident to them.20 For (C1)since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, (C2)being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.21 For even though they knew God, they did not (F1)honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became (C1)futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened.22 (C1)Claiming to be wise, they became fools,23 and they (C1)exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and (F1)crawling creatures.

24 Therefore (C1)God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be (C2)dishonored among them.25 For they exchanged the truth of God for (F1)(C1)falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (C2)who is blessed (F2)forever. Amen.

26 For this reason (C1)God gave them over to (C2)degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature,27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations (F1)with women and burned in their desire toward one another, (C1)males with males committing (F2)shameful acts and receiving in (F3)their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit (F1)to acknowledge God, (C1)God gave them up to a depraved mind, to do those things that are not proper,29 people having been filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice; they are (C1)gossips,30 slanderers, (F1)(C1)haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, (C2)disobedient to parents,31 without understanding, untrustworthy, (C1)unfeeling, and unmerciful;32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of (C1)death, they not only do the same, but also (C2)approve of those who practice them.
