1 Samuel 3
Chapter 3
The Prophetic Call to Samuel
1 Now (C1)the boy Samuel was attending to the service of the LORD before Eli. And (C2)word from the LORD was rare in those days; (F1)visions were infrequent.
2 But it happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now (C1)his eyesight had begun to be (F1)poor and he could not see well),3 and (C1)the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was,4 that the LORD called Samuel; and he said, "(C1)Here I am."5 Then he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.6 And the LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son, go back and lie down."7 (C1)Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor had the word of the LORD yet been revealed to him.8 So the LORD called Samuel again for the third time. And he got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy.9 And Eli said to Samuel, "Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 Then the LORD came and stood, and called as at the other times: "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for Your servant is listening."11 Then the LORD said to Samuel, "Behold, (C1)I am going to do a thing in Israel, and both ears of everyone who hears about it will ring.12 "On that day (C1)I will carry out against Eli everything that I have spoken in regard to his house, from beginning to end.13 "For (C1)I have told him that I am going to judge his house forever for (C2)the wrongdoing that he knew, because (C3)his sons were bringing a curse on themselves and (C4)he did not rebuke them.14 "Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that (C1)the wrongdoing of Eli's house shall never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering."
15 So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he (C1)opened the doors of the house of the LORD. But Samuel was afraid to tell (C2)the vision to Eli.16 Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am."17 He said, "What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. (C1)May God do the same to you, and more so, if you hide a single word from me of all the words that He spoke to you!"18 So Samuel told him (F1)everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "(C1)He is the LORD; let Him do (F2)what seems good to Him."
19 Now (C1)Samuel grew, and (C2)the LORD was with him, and He (C3)let none of his words (F1)fail.20 And all Israel (C1)from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD.21 And (C1)the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, (C2)because the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
Psalms 51
Chapter 51
A Contrite Sinner's Prayer for Pardon.
1 (C1)Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness;
According to the greatness of (C2)Your compassion, (C3)wipe out my wrongdoings.
2 (C1)Wash me thoroughly from my guilt
And (C2)cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I (C1)know my wrongdoings,
And my sin is constantly before me.
4 (C1)Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is (C2)evil in Your sight,
So that (C3)You (F1)are justified (F2)when You speak
And (F3)blameless when You judge.
5 Behold, I was (C1)brought forth in guilt,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
6 Behold, You desire (C1)truth in the (F1)innermost being,
And in secret You will (C2)make wisdom known to me.
7 (F1)Purify me (C1)with hyssop, and I will be clean;
(F2)Cleanse me, and I will be (C2)whiter than snow.
8 (F1)Let me hear (C1)joy and gladness,
Let the (C2)bones You have broken rejoice.
9 (C1)Hide Your face from my sins
And wipe out all my guilty deeds.
10 (C1)Create (F1)in me a (C2)clean heart, God,
And renew a (C3)steadfast spirit within me.
11 (C1)Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your (C2)Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the (C1)joy of Your salvation,
And sustain me with a (C2)willing spirit.
13 Then I will (C1)teach wrongdoers Your ways,
And sinners will (F1)be (C2)converted to You.
14 Save me from (C1)the guilt of bloodshed, God, (C2)the God of my salvation;
Then my (C3)tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.
15 Lord, (F1)(C1)open my lips,
So that my mouth may (C2)declare Your praise.
16 For You (C1)do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You do not take pleasure in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a (C1)broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, God, You will not despise.
18 (C1)By Your favor do good to Zion;
(F1)(C2)Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You will delight in (F1)(C1)righteous sacrifices,
In (C2)burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then (F2)bulls will be offered on Your altar.
Acts 27:13-44
Chapter 27
13 (F1)When a moderate south wind came up, thinking that they had attained their purpose, they weighed anchor and began (C1)sailing along (C2)Crete, closer to shore.
Shipwreck
14 But before very long a violent wind, called (F1)Euraquilo, (C1)rushed down from (F2)the land;15 and when the ship was caught in it and could not head up into the wind, we gave up and let ourselves be driven by the wind.16 Running under the shelter of a small island called Cauda, we were able to get the ship's (F1)boat under control only with difficulty.17 After they had hoisted it up, they used (F1)supporting cables in undergirding the ship; and fearing that they might (C1)run aground on the shallows of Syrtis, they let down the (F2)sea anchor and let themselves be driven along in this way.18 The next day as we were being violently tossed by the storm, (F1)they began to (C1)jettison the cargo;19 and on the third day they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.20 Since neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was assailing us, from then on all hope of our being saved was slowly abandoned.21 (F1)When many had lost their appetites, Paul then stood among them and said, "(F2)(C1)Men, you should have followed my advice and not have set sail from (C2)Crete, and thereby spared yourselves this (C1)damage and loss.22 "And yet now I urge you to (C1)keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.23 "For this very night (C1)an angel of the God to whom I belong, (C2)whom I also serve, (C3)came to me,24 saying, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; (C1)you must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has graciously granted you (C2)all those who are sailing with you.'25 "Therefore, (C1)keep up your courage, men, for I believe God that (F1)it will turn out exactly as I have been told.26 "But we must (C1)run aground on a certain (C2)island."
27 But when the fourteenth night came, as we were being driven about in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors began to suspect that (F1)they were approaching some land.28 And they took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and a little farther on they took another sounding and found it to be fifteen fathoms.29 Fearing that we might (C1)run aground somewhere on the (F1)rocks, they cast four anchors from the stern and (F2)prayed for daybreak.30 But as the sailors were trying to escape from the ship and had let down (C1)the ship's boat into the sea, on the pretense that they were going to lay out anchors from the bow,31 Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men remain on the ship, you yourselves cannot be saved."32 Then the soldiers cut away the (C1)ropes of the ship's boat and let it fall away.
33 Until the day was about to dawn, Paul kept encouraging them all to take some food, saying, "Today is the fourteenth day that you have been constantly watching and going without eating, having taken in nothing.34 "Therefore, I encourage you to take some food, for this is for your survival, for (C1)not a hair from the head of any of you will perish."35 Having said this, he took bread and (C1)gave thanks to God in the presence of them all, and he broke it and began to eat.36 All (C1)of them (F1)were encouraged and they themselves also took food.37 We were 276 (F1)(C1)people on the ship in all.38 When they had eaten enough, they began lightening the ship by (C1)throwing the wheat out into the sea.
39 Now when day came, (C1)they (F1)could not recognize the land; but they did notice a bay with a beach, and they resolved to run the ship onto it if they could.40 And casting off (C1)the anchors, they left them in the sea while at the same time they were loosening the ropes of the rudders; and they hoisted the foresail to the wind and were heading for the beach.41 But they struck a (F1)reef where two seas met and ran the ship aground; and the prow stuck firmly and remained immovable, while the stern started to break up due to the force of the waves.42 The soldiers' plan was to (C1)kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim away and escape;43 but the centurion, (C1)wanting to bring Paul safely through, kept them from accomplishing their intention, and commanded that those who could swim were to (F1)jump overboard first and get to land,44 and the rest were to follow, some on planks, and others on various things from the ship. And so it happened that (C1)they all were brought safely to land.
