Judges 21

Chapter 21

Mourning a Lost Tribe

1 Now the men of Israel (C1)had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin (F1)in marriage."2 (C1)So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, and raised their voices and wept (F1)profusely.3 And they said, "Why, LORD, God of Israel, has this happened in Israel, that one tribe is missing today from Israel?"4 And it came about the next day that the people got up early and built (C1)an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

5 Then the sons of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not go up to the LORD in the assembly?" For (F1)they had taken a solemn oath concerning anyone (C1)who did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah, saying, "He shall certainly be put to death."6 And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin, and said, "Today one tribe is cut off from Israel!7 "What are we to do for wives for those who are left, since we have (C1)sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters as wives?"

Provision for Their Survival

8 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not go up to the LORD at Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.9 For when the people were (F1)counted, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.10 And the congregation sent twelve thousand (F1)of the valiant warriors there, and commanded them, saying, "Go and (C1)strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, along with the women and the children.11 "And this is the thing that you shall do: you (C1)shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has (F1)slept with a male."12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known a man by (F1)sleeping with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

13 Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Benjamin who were (C1)at the rock of Rimmon, and (C2)proclaimed peace to them.14 And the tribe of Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had allowed to live from the women of Jabesh-gilead; but they (F1)were not enough for them.15 And the people were sorry for Benjamin, because the LORD had created a gap in the tribes of Israel.

16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What are we to do for wives for those who are left, since the women have been eliminated from Benjamin?"17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be wiped out from Israel.18 "But we cannot give them wives from our daughters." For the sons of Israel (C1)had sworn, saying, "Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin!"

19 So they said, "Behold, there is a feast of the LORD from year to year in (C1)Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south side of Lebonah."20 And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,21 and watch; and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to (F1)(C1)take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards, and each of you shall seize his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.22 "And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we shall say to them, '(F1)Give them to us voluntarily, because we did not take for each man of Benjamin (F2)a wife in battle, (F3)(C1)nor did you give them to them, (F4)otherwise you would now be guilty.'"23 The sons of Benjamin did so, and took wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they seized. And they went and returned to their inheritance, and (C1)rebuilt the cities and lived in them.24 And the sons of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one departed from there to his inheritance.

25 (C1)In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Psalms 46

Chapter 46

God, the Refuge of His People.

For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, (FA)set to Alamoth. A Song.

1 God is our (C1)refuge and strength,
A (F1)very (C2)ready help (C3)in (F2)trouble.

2 Therefore we will (C1)not fear, though (C2)the earth shakes
And (C3)the mountains slip into the heart of the (F1)sea;

3 Though its (C1)waters roar and foam,
Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah

4 There is a (C1)river whose streams make the (C2)city of God happy,
The holy (C3)dwelling places of the Most High.

5 God is (C1)in the midst of her, she will not be moved;
God will (C2)help her (F1)when morning dawns.

6 The (F1)nations (C1)made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered;
He (F2)(C2)raised His voice, the earth (C3)quaked.

7 The LORD of armies (C1)is with us;
The God of Jacob is (C2)our stronghold. Selah

8 Come, (C1)behold the works of the LORD,
(F1)Who has inflicted (C2)horrific events on the earth.

9 He (C1)makes wars to cease to the end of the earth;
He (C2)breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He (C3)burns the chariots with fire.

10 "(F1)Stop striving and (C1)know that I am God;
I will be (C2)exalted among the (F2)nations, I will be exalted on the earth."

11 The LORD of armies is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah

Acts 24:10-27

Chapter 24

10 And when (C1)the governor had nodded for him to speak, Paul responded: "Knowing that for many years you have been a judge to this nation, I cheerfully make my defense,11 since you can take note of the fact that no more than (C1)twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.12 "(C1)And neither in the temple did they find me carrying on a discussion with anyone or (C2)causing (F1)a riot, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city itself.13 "(C1)Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.14 "But I confess this to you, that in accordance with (F1)(C1)the Way, which they call a (C2)sect, I do serve (C3)the God of our fathers, (C4)believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and is written in the Prophets;15 having a hope in God, which (C1)these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.16 "In view of this (C1)I also do my best to maintain a blameless conscience both before God and before other people, always.17 "Now (C1)after several years I (C2)came to bring charitable gifts to my nation and to present offerings,18 in which they found me occupied in the temple, having been (C1)purified, without any (C2)crowd or uproar. But there were some (C3)Jews from (F1)Asia—19 who ought to have been present before you and to have been (C1)bringing charges, if they should have anything against me.20 "Or else have these men themselves declare what violation they discovered when I stood before (C1)the (F1)Council,21 other than in regard to this one declaration which (C1)I shouted while standing among them, 'For the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you today!'"

22 But Felix, (F1)having quite accurate knowledge about (F2)(C1)the Way, adjourned them, saying, "When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case."23 He gave orders to the centurion for (F1)Paul to be (C1)kept in custody and yet (C2)have some freedom, and not to prevent any of (C3)his friends from providing for his needs.

24 Now some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla his (F1)wife, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about (C1)faith in Christ Jesus.25 But as he was discussing (C1)righteousness, (C2)self-control, and (C3)the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and responded, "Go away for now, and when I have an opportunity, I will summon you."26 At the same time he was also hoping that (C1)money would be given to him by Paul; therefore he also used to send for him quite often and talk with him.27 But after two years had passed, Felix (F1)was succeeded by Porcius (C1)Festus; and Felix, (C2)wanting to do the Jews a favor, left Paul (C3)imprisoned.
