Judges 13

Chapter 13

Philistines Oppress Again

1 Now the sons of Israel (C1)again did evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD handed them over to the Philistines for forty years.

2 And there was a man of (C1)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was infertile and had not given birth to any children.3 (C1)Then the angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, "Behold now, you are infertile and have not given birth; but you will conceive and give birth to a son.4 "And now, be careful (C1)not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any (F1)unclean thing.5 "(C1)For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a (C2)Nazirite to God from the womb; and he will begin to save Israel from the hands of the Philistines."6 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, "(C1)A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. So I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name.7 "But he said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and now you shall not drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any (F1)unclean thing, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.'"

8 Then Manoah pleaded with the LORD and said, "Lord, please let (C1)the man of God whom You have sent come to us again so that he may teach us what we are to do for the boy who is to be born."9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and (C1)the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her.10 So the woman hurried and ran, and told her (F1)husband, "Behold, (C1)the man who (F2)came the other day has appeared to me!"11 So Manoah got up and followed his wife, and when he came to the man he said to him, "Are you (C1)the man who spoke to the woman?" And he said, "I am."12 Then Manoah said, "Now when your words (F1)are fulfilled, what shall be the boy's way of life and his vocation?"13 And (C1)the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "(C2)The woman shall pay attention (F1)to all that I said.14 "She shall not eat anything that comes from the (C1)vine nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; she shall keep all that I commanded."

15 Then Manoah said to (C1)the angel of the LORD, "Please let us detain you so that we may prepare a young goat for you."16 But the angel of the LORD said to Manoah, "Though you detain me, (C1)I will not eat your (F1)food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD." For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the LORD.17 And Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, "(C1)What is your name, so that when your words (F1)are fulfilled, we may honor you?"18 But the angel of the LORD said to him, "Why do you ask my name, for it is (F1)(C1)wonderful?"19 So (C1)Manoah took the young goat along with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to the LORD; and He performed wonders while Manoah and his wife looked on.20 For it came about when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they (C1)fell on their faces to the ground.

21 Now the angel of the LORD did not appear to Manoah or his wife again. (C1)Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD.22 So Manoah said to his wife, "(C1)We will certainly die, for we have seen God."23 But his wife said to him, "If the LORD had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have (C1)shown us all these things, nor would He have let us hear things like this at this time."

24 So the woman gave birth to a son, and named him Samson; and the (C1)child grew up and the LORD blessed him.25 And (C1)the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him when he was in (F1)(C2)Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Job 41

Chapter 41

God's Power Shown in Creatures

1 "(F1)Can you drag out (F2)(C1)Leviathan with a fishhook,
And press down his tongue with a rope?

2 "Can you (C1)put a (F1)rope in his nose,
And pierce his jaw with a (F2)hook?

3 "Will he make many pleas to you,
Or will he speak to you gentle words?

4 "Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?

5 "Will you play with him as with a bird,
And tie him down for your young girls?

6 "Will the (F1)traders bargain for him?
Will they divide him among the merchants?

7 "Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?

8 "Lay your hand on him.
Remember the battle; (F1)you will not do it again!

9 "(F1)Behold, (F2)your expectation is false;
Will (F3)you be hurled down even at the sight of him?

10 "No one is so reckless that he dares to (C1)stir him;
Who then is he who opposes Me?

11 "Who has (C1)been first to give to Me, that I should repay him?
Whatever is (C2)under the entire heaven is Mine.

12 "I will not be silent about his limbs,
Or his mighty strength, or his graceful frame.

13 "Who can (F1)strip off his outer covering?
Who can (F2)pierce his double (F3)armor?

14 "Who can open the doors of his face?
Around his teeth there is terror.

15 "His (F1)strong scales are his pride,
Locked as with a tight seal.

16 "One is so close to another
That no air can come between them.

17 "They are joined one to another;
They clasp each other and cannot be separated.

18 "His sneezes flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the (C1)eye of dawn.

19 "From his mouth go burning torches;
Sparks of fire leap forth.

20 "From his nostrils smoke goes out
As from a boiling pot and burning reeds.

21 "His breath sets coals aglow,
And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

22 "In his neck dwells strength,
And dismay leaps before him.

23 "The folds of his flesh are joined together,
Firm and immovable on him.

24 "His heart is as firm as a stone,
And as firm as a lower millstone.

25 "When he rises up, the (F1)mighty are afraid;
Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

26 "The sword that reaches him cannot (F1)prevail,
Nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin.

27 "He regards iron as straw,
Bronze as rotten wood.

28 "The (F1)arrow cannot make him flee;
Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.

29 "Clubs are regarded as stubble;
He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.

30 "His underparts are like sharp pieces of pottery;
He (F1)spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mud.

31 "He makes the depths boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.

32 "Behind him he illuminates a pathway;
One would think the deep to be gray-haired.

33 "(C1)Nothing on (F1)earth is like him,
One made without fear.

34 "(F1)He looks on everything that is high;
He is king over all the (C1)sons of pride."

Acts 20:1-16

Chapter 20

Paul in Macedonia and Greece

1 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for (C1)the disciples, and when he had (F1)encouraged them and taken his leave of them, he left (C2)to go to (C3)Macedonia.2 When he had gone through those regions and had given them much (F1)encouragement, he came to Greece.3 And there he spent three months, and when (C1)a plot was formed against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for (C2)Syria, he decided to return through (C3)Macedonia.4 And (F1)he was accompanied by Sopater of (C1)Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by (C2)Aristarchus and Secundus of the (C3)Thessalonians, and (C2)Gaius of (C4)Derbe, and (C5)Timothy, and (C6)Tychicus and (C7)Trophimus of (F2)(C8)Asia.5 Now these had gone on ahead and were waiting for (C1)us at (C2)Troas.6 (C1)We sailed from (C2)Philippi after (F1)(C3)the days of Unleavened Bread, and reached them at (C4)Troas within five days; and we stayed there for seven days.

7 On (C1)the first day of the week, when (C2)we were gathered together to (C3)break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his (F1)message until midnight.8 There were many (C1)lamps in the (C2)upstairs room where we were gathered together.9 And there was a young man named (F1)Eutychus sitting (F2)on the window sill, sinking into a deep sleep; and as Paul kept on talking, Eutychus was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third floor, and was picked up dead.10 But Paul went down and (C1)fell upon him, and after embracing him, he (C2)said, "(F1)Do not be troubled, for (F2)he is still alive."11 When Paul had gone back up and had (C1)broken the bread and (F1)eaten, he talked with them a long while until daybreak, and then left.12 They took away the boy alive, and were (F1)greatly comforted.

Troas to Miletus

13 But (C1)we went ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending from there to take Paul on board; for that was what he had arranged, intending himself to go (F1)by land.14 And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene.15 Sailing from there, we arrived the following day opposite Chios; and the next day we crossed over to Samos, and on the following day we came to (C1)Miletus.16 For Paul had decided to sail past (C1)Ephesus so that he would not have to lose time in (F1)(C2)Asia; for he was hurrying, if it might be possible for him (C3)to be in Jerusalem (C4)the day of Pentecost.<
