Judges 11:34-12:15

Chapter 11

34 But Jephthah came to his house at (C1)Mizpah, and behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him (C2)with tambourines and with dancing. And she was his one and only child; besides her he had no son or daughter.35 So when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, "Oh, my daughter! You have brought me disaster, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have (F1)given my word to the LORD, and (C1)I cannot take it back."36 So she said to him, "My father, you have (F1)given your word to the LORD; (C1)do to me just as (F2)you have said, since the LORD has brought you vengeance on your enemies, the sons of Ammon."37 And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me; allow me two months, so that I may (F1)go to the mountains and weep because of (C1)my virginity, I and my friends."38 Then he said, "Go." So he let her go for two months; and she left with her friends, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity.39 And at the end of two months she returned to her father, who did to her (F1)what he had vowed; and she (F2)had no relations with a man. And it became a custom in Israel,40 that the (F1)daughters of Israel went annually to (F2)commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for four days in the year.

Chapter 12

Jephthah and His Successors

1 Now the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they crossed (F1)to Zaphon; and (C1)they said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the sons of Ammon without calling us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you!"2 So Jephthah said to them, "I and my people were in a major dispute with the sons of Ammon; and I did call you, but you did not save me from their hand.3 "When I saw that you were no deliverer, I (F1)(C1)took my life in my hands and crossed over against the sons of Ammon, and the LORD handed them over to me. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?"4 Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought Ephraim; and the men of Gilead (F1)defeated Ephraim, because they said, "You are survivors of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasseh."5 And the Gileadites (C1)took control of the crossing places of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it happened whenever any of the survivors of Ephraim said, "Let me cross over," that the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No,"6 then they would say to him, "Just say, 'Shibboleth.'" But he said, "Sibboleth," for he was not (F1)prepared to (F2)pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the crossing places of the Jordan. So at that time forty-two thousand from Ephraim fell.

7 Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.

8 Now Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel after him.9 He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he (F1)gave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirty daughters from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel for seven years.10 Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem.

11 Now Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel after him; he judged Israel for ten years.12 Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.

13 Now Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel after him.14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkeys; and he judged Israel for eight years.15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.

Job 40

Chapter 40

Job Says What Can I Say?

1 Then the LORD said to Job,

2 "Will the faultfinder (C1)contend with the Almighty?
Let him who (C2)rebukes God (F1)give an answer."

3 Then Job answered the LORD and said,

4 "Behold, I am insignificant; what can I say in response to You?
I (C1)put my hand on my mouth.

5 "I have spoken once, and (C1)I will not reply;
Or twice, and I will add nothing more."

God Questions Job

6 Then the (C1)LORD answered Job from the whirlwind and said,

7 "Now (F1)(C1)tighten the belt on your waist like a man;
I will (C2)ask you, and you instruct Me.

8 "Will you really (C1)nullify My judgment?
Will you (C2)condemn Me (C3)so that you may be justified?

9 "Or do you have an arm like God,
And can you (C1)thunder with a voice like His?

10 "(C1)Adorn yourself with pride and dignity,
And clothe yourself with honor and majesty.

11 "Let out your (C1)outbursts of anger,
And look at everyone who is (C2)arrogant, and humble him.

12 "Look at everyone who is arrogant, and (C1)humble him,
And (C2)trample down the wicked (F1)where they stand.

13 "(C1)Hide them together in the dust;
Imprison (F1)them in the hidden place.

14 "Then I will also (F1)confess to you,
That your own right hand can save you.

God's Power Shown in Creatures

15 "Behold, (F1)Behemoth, which (C1)I made (F2)as well as you;
He eats grass like an ox.

16 "Behold, his strength in his waist,
And his power in the muscles of his belly.

17 "He hangs his tail like a cedar;
The tendons of his thighs are knit together.

18 "His bones are tubes of bronze;
His (F1)limbs are like bars of iron.

19 "He is the (C1)first of the ways of God;
Let his (C2)Maker bring His sword near.

20 "Indeed the (F1)mountains (C1)bring him food,
And all the animals of the field (C2)play there.

21 "He lies down under the lotus plants,
In the hiding place of the reeds and the marsh.

22 "The lotus plants cover him with (F1)shade;
The willows of the brook surround him.

23 "If a river (F1)rages, he is not alarmed;
He is confident, though the (C1)Jordan rushes to his mouth.

24 "Can anyone capture him (F1)when he is on watch,
Can anyone pierce his nose with barbs?

Acts 19:21-41

Chapter 19

21 Now after these things were finished, Paul resolved in (F1)the Spirit to (C1)go to Jerusalem (C2)after he had passed through (C3)Macedonia and (C4)Achaia, saying, "After I have been there, (C5)I must also see Rome."22 And after he sent into (C1)Macedonia two of (C2)those who assisted him, (C3)Timothy and (C4)Erastus, he himself stayed in (F1)(C5)Asia for a while.

23 About that time (F1)a major disturbance occurred in regard to (F2)(C1)the Way.24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of (F1)Artemis, (C1)was bringing (F2)considerable (F3)business to the craftsmen;25 he gathered these men together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity (F1)depends upon this business.26 "You see and hear that not only in (C1)Ephesus, but in almost all of (F1)(C2)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that (F2)(C3)gods made by hands are not gods at all.27 "Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess (F1)Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of (F2)(C1)Asia and (C2)the (F3)world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence."

28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began shouting, saying, "Great is (F1)Artemis of the (C1)Ephesians!"29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging along (C1)Gaius and (C2)Aristarchus, Paul's (C3)Macedonian traveling (C4)companions.30 And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, (C1)the disciples would not let him.31 Also some of the (F1)Asiarchs who were friends of his sent word to him and repeatedly urged him not to (F2)venture into the theater.32 (C1)So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the (F1)assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know (F2)for what reason they had come together.33 Some of the crowd (F1)concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having (C1)motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly.34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, "Great is (F1)Artemis of the Ephesians!"

35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk (*)said, "Men of (C1)Ephesus, what person is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great (F1)Artemis and of the image which fell down from (F2)the sky?36 "So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.37 "For you have brought these men here who are neither (C1)temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess.38 "So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and (F1)(C1)proconsuls are available; have them bring charges against one another.39 "But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the (F1)lawful (F2)assembly.40 "For indeed, we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events, since there is no real reason for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering."41 After saying this he dismissed the (F1)assembly.
