Judges 10:1-11:33

Chapter 10

Oppression by Philistines and Ammonites

1 Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, (C1)rose up to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim.2 He judged Israel for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.

3 After him, Jair the Gileadite rose up and judged Israel for twenty-two years.4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities (F1)in the land of Gilead (C1)that are called (F2)Havvoth-jair to this day.5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

6 Then the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, and (C1)they served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, (C2)the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; so (C3)they abandoned the LORD and did not serve Him.7 And the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He (C1)sold them into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.8 And they (F1)afflicted and oppressed the sons of Israel (F2)that year; for eighteen years they oppressed all the sons of Israel who were beyond the Jordan, (F3)in Gilead in the land of the Amorites.9 And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great difficulty.

10 Then the (C1)sons of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have abandoned our God and served the Baals."11 And the LORD said to the sons of Israel, "Did I not save you (C1)from the Egyptians, (C2)the Amorites, (C3)the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?12 "And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites (C1)oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I saved you from their hands.13 "Yet (C1)you abandoned Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer save you.14 "(C1)Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress."15 Then the sons of Israel said to the LORD, "We have sinned, (C1)do to us whatever (F1)seems good to You; only please save us this day."16 (C1)So they removed the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and (F1)(C2)He could no longer endure the misery of Israel.

17 Then the sons of Ammon were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together and camped in (C1)Mizpah.18 And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another, "Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

Chapter 11

Jephthah, the Ninth Judge

1 Now (C1)Jephthah the Gileadite was a (F1)valiant warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. And Gilead had fathered Jephthah.2 Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, "You shall not have an inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman."3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of (C1)Tob; and worthless men gathered (F1)around Jephthah, and they went (F2)wherever he did.

4 Now it came about, after a while, that (C1)the sons of Ammon fought against Israel.5 When the sons of Ammon fought against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob;6 and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the sons of Ammon."7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "(C1)Did you not hate me and drive me from my father's house? So why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?"8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "For this reason we have now returned to you, that you may go with us and fight the sons of Ammon, and (C1)become our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."9 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me back to fight against the sons of Ammon and the LORD gives them up (F1)to me, will I become your head?"10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "(C1)The LORD is (F1)witness between us; be assured we will do (F2)as you have said."11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at (C1)Mizpah.

12 So Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, "What conflict do you and I have, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"13 And the king of the sons of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah, "It is because Israel (C1)took my land when they came up from Egypt, from the Arnon as far as the (C2)Jabbok and the Jordan; so return them peaceably now."14 But Jephthah sent messengers once again to the king of the sons of Ammon,15 and they said to him, "This is what Jephthah says: 'Israel did not take the land of Moab nor the land of the sons of Ammon.16 'For when they came up from Egypt, and Israel (C1)went through the wilderness to the (F1)Red Sea, and (C2)came to Kadesh,17 then Israel (C1)sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us pass through your land"; but the king of Edom would not listen. (C2)And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.18 'Then they went through the wilderness and (C1)around the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they camped beyond the Arnon; but they (C2)did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.19 'And Israel sent (C1)messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, "Please let us pass through your land to our place."20 'But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people and camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.21 'And the LORD, the God of Israel, handed Sihon and all his people over to Israel, and they (F1)(C1)defeated them; so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.22 '(C1)So they possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and from the wilderness as far as the Jordan.23 'And now the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from His people Israel; so should you possess it?24 'Do you not possess what (C1)Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess it.25 'Now then, are you any better than (C1)Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel, or did he ever fight against them?26 '(C1)While Israel was living in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?27 'So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me. (C1)May the LORD, the Judge, judge today between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.'"28 But the king of the sons of Ammon (F1)disregarded the message which Jephthah sent him.

Jephthah's Tragic Vow

29 Now (C1)the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon.30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, "If You will indeed hand over to me the sons of Ammon,31 then whatever comes out the doors of my house to meet me when I return (F1)safely from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering."32 So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD handed them over to him.33 He (F1)inflicted a very great defeat on them from Aroer (F2)to the entrance of (C1)Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.

34 But Jephthah came to his house at (C1)Mizpah, and behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him (C2)with tambourines and with dancing. And she was his one and only child; besides her he had no son or daughter.35 So when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, "Oh, my daughter! You have brought me disaster, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have (F1)given my word to the LORD, and (C1)I cannot take it back."36 So she said to him, "My father, you have (F1)given your word to the LORD; (C1)do to me just as (F2)you have said, since the LORD has brought you vengeance on your enemies, the sons of Ammon."37 And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me; allow me two months, so that I may (F1)go to the mountains and weep because of (C1)my virginity, I and my friends."38 Then he said, "Go." So he let her go for two months; and she left with her friends, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity.39 And at the end of two months she returned to her father, who did to her (F1)what he had vowed; and she (F2)had no relations with a man. And it became a custom in Israel,40 that the (F1)daughters of Israel went annually to (F2)commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for four days in the year.

Job 39

Chapter 39

God Speaks of Nature and Its Beings

1 "Do you know the time the (F1)(C1)mountain goats give birth?
Do you observe the calving of the (C2)deer?

2 "Can you count the months they fulfill,
Or do you know the time they give birth?

3 "They kneel down, they deliver their young,
They get rid of their labor pains.

4 "Their offspring become strong, they grow up in the open field;
They leave and do not return to them.

5 "Who sent the (C1)wild donkey out free?
And who opened the bonds of the swift donkey,

6 To whom I gave (C1)the wilderness as his home,
And the salt land as his dwelling place?

7 "He laughs at the turmoil of the city,
He does not hear the shouting of the taskmaster.

8 "He explores the mountains of his pasture,
And searches after every green thing.

9 "Will the (C1)wild bull be willing to serve you,
Or will he spend the night at your feeding trough?

10 "Can you tie down the wild bull in a furrow with (F1)ropes,
Or will he (F2)plow the valleys after you?

11 "Will you trust him because his strength is great,
And leave your labor to him?

12 "Will you have faith in him that he will return your (F1)grain
And gather it from your threshing floor?

13 "The wings of the ostrich flap joyously,
With the pinion and feathers of (F1)love,

14 For she abandons her eggs to the earth
And warms them in the dust,

15 And she forgets that a foot may crush (F1)them,
Or that a wild animal may trample (F1)them.

16 "She treats her young (C1)cruelly, as if they were not hers;
Though her labor is for nothing, she is (F1)unconcerned,

17 Because God has made her forget wisdom,
And has not given her a share of understanding.

18 "When she rushes away on high,
She laughs at the horse and his rider.

19 "Do you give the horse his might?
Do you clothe his neck with a mane?

20 "Do you make him (C1)leap like locusts?
His majestic (C2)snorting is frightening.

21 "(F1)He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength;
He (C1)goes out to meet the battle.

22 "He laughs at fear and is not dismayed;
And he does not turn back from the sword.

23 "The quiver rattles against him,
The flashing spear and javelin.

24 "He (F1)races over the ground with a roar and fury,
And he does not stand still when he hears the sound of the trumpet.

25 "As often as the trumpet sounds he says, 'Aha!'
And he senses the battle from afar,
And the thunder of the captains and the war cry.

26 "Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars,
Stretching his wings toward the south?

27 "Is it at your (F1)command that the eagle flies high,
And makes (C1)his nest on high?

28 "He dwells and spends his nights on the cliff,
On the rocky cliff, an inaccessible place.

29 "From there he (C1)tracks food;
His eyes look at it from afar.

30 "His young ones also lick up blood greedily;
And (C1)where the slain are, there he is."

Acts 19:1-20

Chapter 19

Paul in Ephesus

1 Now it happened that while (C1)Apollos was in (C2)Corinth, Paul passed through the (C3)upper country and came to (C4)Ephesus, and found some disciples.2 He said to them, "(C1)Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "On the contrary, (C2)we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit."3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "(C1)Into John's baptism."4 Paul said, "(C1)John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people (C2)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."5 When they heard this, they were (C1)baptized (F1)in the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had (C1)laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began (C2)speaking with tongues and (C3)prophesying.7 There were about twelve men in all.

8 And he entered (C1)the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, having discussions and persuading them (C2)about the kingdom of God.9 But when (C1)some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of (F1)(C2)the Way before the (F2)people, he withdrew from them and took (C3)the disciples away with him, and had discussions daily in the school of Tyrannus.10 This took place for (C1)two years, so that all who lived in (F1)(C2)Asia heard (C3)the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

Miracles at Ephesus

11 God was performing (C1)extraordinary (F1)miracles by the hands of Paul,12 (C1)so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and (C2)the evil spirits went out.13 But also some of the Jewish (C1)exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to (F1)use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I order you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches!"14 Now there were seven sons of (F1)Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, doing this.15 But the evil spirit responded and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know of Paul, but who are you?"16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit, pounced on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.17 This became known to all who lived in (C1)Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.18 Also many of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they added up the prices of (F1)the books and found it to be fifty thousand (F2)(C1)pieces of silver.20 So (F1)(C1)the word of the Lord (C2)was growing and prevailing mightily.<
