Joshua 11-12

Chapter 11

Northern Canaan Taken

1 Then it came about, when Jabin king of (C1)Hazor heard about it, that he sent word to Jobab king of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,2 and to the kings who were of the north in the hill country, and in the (C1)Arabah—south of (F1)Chinneroth and in the lowland, and on the (F2)heights of Dor on the west—3 to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill country, and (C1)the Hivite (F1)at the foot of (C2)Hermon in the land of (C3)Mizpeh.4 Then they came out, they and all their armies with them, (C1)as many people as the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.5 So all of these kings gathered together, and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

6 Yet the LORD said to Joshua, "(C1)Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow at this time I am going to turn all of them over to Israel as good as dead; you shall (C2)hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."7 So Joshua and all the people of war with him came upon them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and attacked them.8 And the LORD handed them over to Israel, so that they (F1)defeated them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, and (C1)Misrephoth-maim, and the Valley of (C2)Mizpeh to the east; and they struck them until no survivor was left to them.9 And Joshua did to them just as the LORD had told him; he (C1)hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Then Joshua turned back at that time and captured (C1)Hazor, and struck its king with the sword; for Hazor previously was the head of all these kingdoms.11 (C1)They struck every person who was in it with the edge of the sword, (F1)utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire.12 Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings; and he struck them with the edge of the sword and utterly destroyed them, just (C1)as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.13 However, Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their mounds, except Hazor alone, which Joshua burned.14 And (C1)all the spoils of these cities and the cattle, the sons of Israel took as their plunder; but they struck every person with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them. They left no one breathing.15 Just as the LORD had commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land: (C1)the hill country and all the (F1)Negev, all the land of Goshen, the lowland, (C2)the Arabah, the hill country of Israel and its lowland17 from (C1)Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir, even as far as Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon (F1)at the foot of Mount Hermon. And he captured (C2)all their kings, and struck them and put them to death.18 Joshua waged war a long time with all these kings.19 There was not a city which made peace with the sons of Israel except (C1)the Hivites living in Gibeon; they took them all in battle.20 (C1)For it was of the LORD to (F1)harden their hearts, to meet Israel in battle in order that he might (C2)utterly destroy them, that they might (F2)receive no mercy, but that he might destroy them, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

21 Then Joshua came at that time and eliminated (C1)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah and all the hill country of Israel. Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.22 There were no Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, (C1)Gath, and (C2)Ashdod some remained.23 So Joshua took the whole land, in accordance with everything that the LORD had spoken to Moses; and (C1)Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. (C2)So the land was at rest from war.

Chapter 12

Kings Defeated by Israel

1 Now these are the (C1)kings of the land whom the sons of Israel (F1)defeated, and they took possession of their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from the Valley of the Arnon as far as Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah to the east:2 Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and ruled (C1)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, both the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, even as far as the brook Jabbok, the border of the sons of Ammon;3 and the (C1)Arabah as far as the Sea of (F1)Chinneroth toward the east, and as far as the Sea of the Arabah, that is, the Salt Sea, eastward (F2)toward (C2)Beth-jeshimoth, and on the south, (F3)at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah;4 and the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of (C1)the remnant of Rephaim, who lived at (C2)Ashtaroth and at Edrei,5 and ruled over Mount Hermon, (C1)Salecah, and all Bashan, as far as (C2)the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.6 Moses the servant of the LORD and the sons of Israel (F1)defeated them; and (C1)Moses the servant of the LORD gave it to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh as a possession.

7 Now these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the sons of Israel (F1)defeated beyond the Jordan toward the west, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon even as far as (C1)Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir; and Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions,8 in (C1)the hill country, in the lowland, in the Arabah, on the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the (F1)Negev; the Hittite, the Amorite and the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:9 the (C1)king of Jericho, one; the (C2)king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one;10 the (C1)king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one;11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;12 the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;13 the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one;14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of (C1)Arad, one;15 the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;16 the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;17 the king of Tappuah, one; the (C1)king of Hepher, one;18 the king of (C1)Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;19 the king of Madon, one; the king of Hazor, one;20 the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one;21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;22 the king of (C1)Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;23 the king of Dor in the (F1)heights of Dor, one; the king of (C1)Goiim in Gilgal, one;24 the king of Tirzah, one: (C1)in all, thirty-one kings.

Job 26

Chapter 26

Job Rebukes Bildad

1 Then Job responded,

2 "What a help you are to (F1)(C1)the weak!
You have saved the arm (C2)without strength!

3 "What advice you have given to one without wisdom!
What helpful insight you have abundantly (F1)provided!

4 "To whom have you uttered words?
And whose (F1)spirit was expressed through you?

The Greatness of God

5 "The (F1)(C1)departed spirits are made to tremble
Under the waters and their inhabitants.

6 "(F1)(C1)Sheol is naked before Him,
And (F2)(C2)Abaddon has no covering.

7 "He (C1)stretches out the north over empty space
And hangs the earth on nothing.

8 "He (C1)wraps up the waters in His clouds,
And the cloud does not burst under them.

9 "He (F1)(C1)obscures the face of the (F2)full moon
And spreads His cloud over it.

10 "He has inscribed a (C1)circle on the surface of the waters
At the (C2)boundary of light and darkness.

11 "The pillars of heaven tremble
And are amazed at His rebuke.

12 "With His power He (C1)quieted the sea,
And by His (C2)understanding He shattered (F1)(C3)Rahab.

13 "By His breath the (C1)heavens are (F1)cleared;
His hand has pierced (C2)the fleeing serpent.

14 "Behold, these are the fringes of His ways;
And how faint (C1)a word we hear of Him!
But His mighty (C2)thunder, who can understand?"

Acts 11:1-18

Chapter 11

Peter Reports in Jerusalem

1 Now the apostles and (C1)the brothers and sisters who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.2 And when Peter came up to Jerusalem, (F1)(C1)the Jewish believers took issue with him,3 saying, "(C1)You (F1)went to (F2)uncircumcised men and ate with them."4 But Peter began and explained at length to them (C1)in an orderly sequence, saying,5 "(C1)I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw (C2)a vision, an (F1)object coming down like a great sheet lowered by four corners from the sky; and it came to where I was,6 and I stared at it and was thinking about it, and I saw the four-footed animals of the earth, the wild animals, the (F1)crawling creatures, and the birds of the sky.7 "I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up, Peter; (F1)kill and eat.'8 "But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing (F1)unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'9 "But a voice from heaven answered a second time, '(C1)What God has cleansed, no longer (F1)consider unholy.'10 "This happened three times, and everything was drawn back up into the sky.11 "And behold, at that moment three men who had been sent to me from (C1)Caesarea came up to the house where we were staying.12 "(C1)And the Spirit told me to go with them (C2)without (F1)misgivings. (C3)These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man's house.13 "And he reported to us how he had seen the angel (F1)standing in his house, and saying, 'Send some men to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here;14 and he will speak (C1)words to you by which you will be saved, you and (C2)all your household.'15 "And as I began to speak, (C1)the Holy Spirit fell upon them just (C2)as He did upon us at the beginning.16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, '(C1)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized (F1)with the Holy Spirit.'17 "Therefore, if (C1)God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, (C2)who was I that I could (F1)stand in God's way?"18 When they heard this, they (F1)quieted down and (C1)glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has also granted to the Gentiles the (C2)repentance that leads to life."<
