1 Samuel 10,11,12
1 Samuel took the flask of oil,(a) poured it out on Saul's head,(b) kissed him, and said, "Hasn't the Lord anointed you(c) ruler over His inheritance?[a](d) 2 Today when you leave me, you'll find two men at Rachel's Grave(e) at Zelzah in the land of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you went looking for have been found,(f) and now your father has stopped being concerned about the donkeys and is worried about you, asking: What should I do about my son?'
3 "You will proceed from there until you come to the oak of Tabor.(g) Three men going up to God at Bethel(h) will meet you there, one bringing three goats, one bringing three loaves of bread, and one bringing a skin of wine. 4 They will ask how you are and give you two loaves[b] of bread, which you will accept from them.
5 "After that you will come to the Hill of God[c](i) where there are Philistine garrisons.[d] When you arrive at the city, you will meet a group of prophets(j) coming down from the high place prophesying.(k) They will be preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres. 6 The Spirit of the Lord will control you,(l) you will prophesy with them,(m) and you will be transformed into a different person.(n) 7 When these signs have happened to you, do whatever your circumstances require[e](o) because God is with you. 8 Afterward, go ahead of me to Gilgal. I will come to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what to do."
9 When Saul turned around[f] to leave Samuel, God changed his heart,[g] and all the signs came about that day. 10 When Saul and his attendant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God took control of him, and he prophesied along with them.
11 Everyone who knew him previously and saw him prophesy with the prophets asked each other, "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"(p)
12 Then a man who was from there asked, "And who is their father?"(q)
As a result, "Is Saul also among the prophets?" became a popular saying. 13 Then Saul finished prophesying and went to the high place.
14 Saul's uncle(r) asked him and his attendant, "Where did you go?"
"To look for the donkeys," Saul answered. "When we saw they weren't there, we went to Samuel."(s)
15 "Tell me," Saul's uncle asked, "what did Samuel say to you?"
16 Saul told him, "He assured us the donkeys had been found." However, Saul did not tell him what Samuel had said about the matter of kingship.
Saul Received as King
17 Samuel summoned the people to the Lord at Mizpah(t) 18 and said to the Israelites, "This is what the Lord , the God of Israel, says:(u) ‘I brought Israel out of Egypt, and I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.' 19 But today you have rejected your God,(v) who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions. You said to Him, ‘You[h] must set a king over us.'(w) Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans."(x)
20 Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected. 21 Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward by its clans, and the Matrite clan was selected.[i] Finally, Saul son of Kish was selected.(y) But when they searched for him, they could not find him. 22 They again inquired of the Lord ,(z) "Has the man come here yet?"
The Lord replied, "There he is, hidden among the supplies."
23 They ran and got him from there. When he stood among the people, he stood a head taller than anyone else.[j](aa) 24 Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see the one the Lord has chosen?(ab) There is no one like him among the entire population."
And all the people shouted,[k] "Long live the king!"(ac)
25 Samuel proclaimed to the people the rights of kingship.(ad) He wrote them on a scroll, which he placed in the presence of the Lord .(ae) Then Samuel sent all the people away, each to his home.
26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah,(af) and brave men whose hearts God had touched went with him. 27 But some wicked men said, "How can this guy save us?" They despised him and did not bring him a gift,(ag) but Saul said nothing.[l][m]
Saul's Deliverance of Jabesh-gilead
1 Nahash[a](a) the Ammonite came up and laid siege to Jabesh-gilead.(b) All the men of Jabesh said to him, "Make a treaty(c) with us, and we will serve you."
2 Nahash the Ammonite replied, "I'll make one with you on this condition: that I gouge out everyone's right eye(d) and humiliate all Israel."(e)
3 "Don't do anything to us for seven days," the elders of Jabesh said to him, "and let us send messengers throughout the territory of Israel. If no one saves us, we will surrender to you."
4 When the messengers came to Gibeah,(f) Saul's hometown, and told the terms to[b] the people, all wept aloud.(g) 5 Just then Saul was coming in from the field behind his oxen. "What's the matter with the people? Why are they weeping?" Saul inquired, and they repeated to him the words of the men from Jabesh.
6 When Saul heard these words, the Spirit of God suddenly took control of him,(h) and his anger burned furiously. 7 He took a team of oxen, cut them in pieces,(i) and sent them throughout the land of Israel by messengers who said, "This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn't march behind Saul and Samuel."(j) As a result, the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they went out united.(k)
8 Saul counted them at Bezek.(l) There were 300,000[c](m) Israelites and 30,000[d] men from Judah. 9 He told the messengers who had come, "Tell this to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Deliverance will be yours tomorrow by the time the sun is hot.'" So the messengers told the men of Jabesh, and they rejoiced.
10 Then the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Tomorrow we will come out, and you can do whatever you want[e] to us."
11 The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions.(n) During the morning watch, they invaded the Ammonite camp and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. There were survivors, but they were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
Saul's Confirmation as King
12 Afterward, the people said to Samuel, "Who said that Saul should not[f] reign over us?(o) Give us those men so we can kill them!"(p)
13 But Saul ordered, "No one will be executed this day, for today the Lord has provided deliverance in Israel."(q)
14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let's go to Gilgal, so we can renew the kingship there." 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there in the Lord 's presence(r) they made Saul king. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings(s) in the Lord 's presence, and Saul and all the men of Israel greatly rejoiced.
Samuel's Final Public Speech
1 Then Samuel said to all Israel, "I have carefully listened to everything you said to me and placed a king over you.(a) 2 Now you can see that the king is leading you. As for me, I'm old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have led you from my youth until today. 3 Here I am. Bring charges against me before the Lord and His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken?(b) Whom have I wronged or mistreated? From whose hand have I taken a bribe to overlook something?[a][b](c) I will return it to you."
4 "You haven't wronged us, you haven't mistreated us, and you haven't taken anything from anyone's hand," they responded.
5 He said to them, "The Lord is a witness against you, and His anointed is a witness today that you haven't found anything(d) in my hand."(e)
"He is a witness," they said.
6 Then Samuel said to the people, "The Lord , who appointed Moses and Aaron(f) and who brought your ancestors up from the land of Egypt, is a witness.[c] 7 Now present yourselves, so I may confront you before the Lord about all the righteous acts He has done for you and your ancestors.
8 "When Jacob went to Egypt,[d] your ancestors cried out to the Lord ,(g) and He sent them Moses and Aaron, who led your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.(h) 9 But they forgot the Lord their God, so He handed them over to Sisera(i) commander of the army of Hazor, to the Philistines, and to the king of Moab.(j) These enemies fought against them. 10 Then they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned, for we abandoned the Lord and worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths. Now deliver us from the power of our enemies,(k) and we will serve You.' 11 So the Lord sent Jerubbaal,(l) Barak,[e](m) Jephthah,(n) and Samuel.(o) He rescued you from the power of the enemies around you, and you lived securely. 12 But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was coming against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king rule over us'—even though the Lord your God is your king.
13 "Now here is the king you've chosen,(p) the one you requested.(q) Look, this is the king the Lord has placed over you. 14 If you fear the Lord ,(r) worship and obey Him, and if you don't rebel against the Lord 's command, then both you and the king who rules over you will follow the Lord your God. 15 However, if you disobey the Lord (s) and rebel against His command, the Lord 's hand will be against you(t) and against your ancestors.[f](u)
16 "Now, therefore, present yourselves and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.(v) 17 Isn't the wheat harvest today?(w) I will call on the Lord and He will send thunder and rain, so that you will know and see what a great evil you committed in the Lord 's sight by requesting a king for yourselves."(x) 18 Samuel called on the Lord , and on that day the Lord sent thunder and rain. As a result, all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.(y)
19 They pleaded with Samuel, "Pray to the Lord your God for your servants,(z) so we won't die! For we have added to all our sins the evil of requesting a king for ourselves."(aa)
20 Samuel replied, "Don't be afraid. Even though you have committed all this evil, don't turn away from following the Lord .(ab) Instead, worship the Lord with all your heart. 21 Don't turn away to follow worthless[g] things that can't profit or deliver you; they are worthless.(ac) 22 The Lord will not abandon His people,(ad) because of His great name and because He has determined to make you His own people.(ae)
23 "As for me, I vow that I will not sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you.(af) I will teach you the good and right way. 24 Above all, fear the Lord and worship Him faithfully with all your heart; consider the great things He has done for you.(ag) 25 However, if you continue to do what is evil, both you and your king will be swept away."(ah)
Luke 19:1-27
Chapter 19
Jesus Visits Zacchaeus
1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man. 4 So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way. 5 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house."
6 So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully. 7 All who saw it began to complain,(a) "He's gone to lodge with a sinful man!"
8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, I'll give[a] half of my possessions to the poor,(b) Lord! And if I have extorted(c) anything from anyone, I'll pay[b] back four times as much!"(d)
9 "Today salvation(e) has come to this house," Jesus told him, "because he too is a son of Abraham. (f) 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost." [c](g)
The Parable of the 10 Minas
11 As(h) they were listening to this, He went on to tell a parable because He was near Jerusalem,(i) and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.(j)
12 Therefore He said: "A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king[d] and then return. 13 He called 10 of his slaves, gave them 10 minas,[e] and told them, ‘Engage in business until I come back.'
14 "But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don't want this man to rule over us!'
15 "At his return, having received the authority to be king,[f] he summoned those slaves he had given the money to, so he could find out how much they had made in business. 16 The first came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned 10 more minas.'
17 "‘Well done, good[g] slave!' he told him. ‘Because you have been faithful(k) in a very small matter, have authority over 10 towns.'
18 "The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.'
19 "So he said to him, ‘You will be over five towns.'
20 "And another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I have kept it hidden away in a cloth 21 because I was afraid of you, for you're a tough man: you collect what you didn't deposit and reap what you didn't sow.'(l)
22 "He told him, ‘I will judge you by what you have said,[h] you evil slave! If you knew I was a tough man, collecting what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow, 23 why didn't you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest!' 24 So he said to those standing there, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has 10 minas.'
25 "But they said to him, ‘Master, he has 10 minas.'
26 "‘I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away. (m) 27 But bring here these enemies of mine,(n) who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter[i] them in my presence.'"
