Joshua 3:1-5:1

Chapter 3

Israel Crosses the Jordan

1 Then Joshua got up early in the morning; and he and all the sons of Israel set out from (C1)Shittim and came to the Jordan, and they spent the night there before they crossed.2 Then (C1)at the end of three days the officers went through the midst of the camp;3 and they commanded the people, saying, "When you see the (C1)ark of the covenant of the LORD your God with the Levitical priests carrying it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.4 "However, there shall be a distance between you and it of about (F1)two thousand cubits by measurement. Do not come near it, so that you may know the way by which you shall go, for you have not passed this way before."

5 Then Joshua said to the people, "(C1)Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do miracles among you."6 And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, "Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over ahead of the people." So they took up the ark of the covenant and went ahead of the people.

7 Now the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I will begin to (C1)exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they will know that just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you.8 "So you shall command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant, saying, 'When you come to the edge of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'"9 Then Joshua said to the sons of Israel, "Come here, and hear the words of the LORD your God."10 And Joshua said, "By this you will know that (C1)the living God is among you, and that He will assuredly (C2)drive out from you the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite.11 "Behold, the ark of the covenant of (C1)the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan.12 "Now then, (C1)take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe.13 "And it will come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, that is, the waters which are (F1)flowing down from above; and they will (C1)stand in one heap."

14 So when the people set out from their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying (C1)the ark of the covenant before the people,15 and when those who were carrying the ark came up to the Jordan and the feet of the priests carrying the ark (F1)stepped down into the edge of the water (for the (C1)Jordan overflows all its banks all the days of harvest),16 then (C1)the waters which were (F1)flowing down from above stood and rose up in (C2)one heap, a great distance away at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those which were (F1)flowing down toward the sea of the (C3)Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. So the people crossed opposite Jericho.17 And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm (C1)on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.

Chapter 4

Memorial Stones from the Jordan

1 Now when the entire nation had finished crossing the (C1)Jordan, the LORD spoke to Joshua, saying,2 "(C1)Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe,3 and command them, saying, 'Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests' feet are standing firmly, and carry them over with you and lay them down in (C1)the encampment where you will spend the night.'"4 So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe;5 and Joshua said to them, "(F1)Cross again to the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel.6 "(F1)This shall be a sign among you; (C1)when your children ask (F2)later, saying, 'What do these stones mean to you?'7 then you shall say to them, 'That the (C1)waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.' So these stones shall become a (C2)memorial to the sons of Israel forever."

8 So the sons of Israel did exactly as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, just as the LORD spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel; and they carried them over with them to (C1)the encampment and put them down there.9 Then Joshua set up twelve (C1)stones in the middle of the Jordan at the place where the feet of the priests who carried the ark of the covenant were standing, and they are there to this day.10 For the priests who carried the ark were standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything was completed that the LORD had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua. And the people hurried and crossed;11 and when all the people had finished crossing, then the ark of the LORD and the priests crossed in front of the people.12 (C1)The sons of Reuben, the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over in battle formation before the sons of Israel, just as Moses had spoken to them;13 about forty thousand equipped for war, crossed for battle before the LORD to the desert plains of Jericho.

14 (C1)On that day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, so that they (F1)revered him, just as they had (F1)revered Moses all the days of his life.

15 Now the LORD said to (F1)Joshua,16 "Command the priests who carry (C1)the ark of the testimony that they come up from the Jordan."17 So Joshua commanded the priests, saying, "Come up from the Jordan."18 It came about when the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD had come up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were (F1)lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks as before.

19 Now the people came up from the Jordan on the (C1)tenth of the first month and camped at Gilgal, on the eastern edge of Jericho.20 As for (F1)(C1)those twelve stones which they had taken from the Jordan, Joshua set them up (C2)at Gilgal.21 And he said to the sons of (F1)Israel, "When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 'What are these stones?'22 then you shall inform your children, saying, 'Israel crossed this Jordan on (C1)dry ground.'23 "For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed, just as the LORD your God had done to the (F1)Red Sea, (C1)which He dried up before us until we had crossed;24 so that (C1)all the peoples of the earth may know that the (C2)hand of the LORD is mighty, so that you may (F1)(C3)fear the LORD your God (F2)forever."

Chapter 5

Israel Is Circumcised

1 Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the (C1)Canaanites who were by the sea, (C2)heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until (F1)they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel.<

Job 22

Chapter 22

Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

2 "Can a strong (C1)man be of use to God,
Or a wise one be useful to himself?

3 "Is it any pleasure to (F1)the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or gain if you make your ways blameless?

4 "Is it because of your (F1)reverence that He punishes you,
That He (C1)enters into judgment against you?

5 "Is (C1)your wickedness not abundant,
And is there no end to your guilty deeds?

6 "For you have (C1)seized pledges from your brothers without cause,
And (F1)(C2)stripped people naked.

7 "You have (C1)given the weary no water to drink,
And you have (C2)withheld bread from the hungry.

8 "But the earth (C1)belongs to the (C2)powerful man,
And (C3)the one who is honorable dwells on it.

9 "You have sent (C1)widows away empty,
And the (F1)strength of (C2)orphans has been crushed.

10 "Therefore (C1)traps surround you,
And sudden (C2)dread terrifies you,

11 Or (C1)darkness, so that you cannot see,
And a (C2)flood of water covers you.

12 "Is God not (C1)in the height of heaven?
Look also at the (F1)highest stars, how high they are!

13 "But you say, '(C1)What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?

14 '(C1)Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;
And He walks on the (F1)vault of heaven.'

15 "Will you keep to the ancient path
Which (C1)wicked people have walked,

16 Who were snatched away (C1)before their time,
Whose (C2)foundations were (F1)washed away by a river?

17 "They (C1)said to God, 'Go away from us!'
And 'What can (F1)the Almighty do to them?'

18 "Yet He (C1)filled their houses with good things;
But (C2)the advice of the wicked is far from me.

19 "The (C1)righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them, saying,

20 'Truly our enemies are eliminated,
And (C1)fire has consumed their (F1)abundance.'

21 "(C1)Be reconciled with Him, and be at peace;
Thereby good will come to you.

22 "Please receive (F1)(C1)instruction from His mouth,
And put His words in your heart.

23 "If you (C1)return to (F1)the Almighty, you will be (F2)restored;
If you (C2)remove injustice far from your tent,

24 And (C1)put your (F1)gold in the dust,
And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks,

25 Then (F1)the Almighty will be your (F2)gold
And abundant silver to you.

26 "For then you will (C1)take pleasure in (F1)the Almighty
And lift up your face to God.

27 "You will (C1)pray to Him, and (C2)He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.

28 "You will also decide something, and it will be established for you;
And (C1)light will shine on your ways.

29 "When (F1)they have brought you low, you will speak with (F2)confidence,
And He will save the (F3)(C1)humble person.

30 "He will rescue one who is not innocent,
And he will be (C1)rescued due to the cleanness of your hands."

Acts 9:1-25

Chapter 9

The Conversion of Saul

1 (C1)Now (F1)Saul, still (C2)breathing (F2)threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,2 and asked for (C1)letters from him to (C2)the synagogues in (C3)Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to (F1)(C4)the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them in shackles to Jerusalem.3 Now as he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and (C1)suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him;4 and (C1)he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?"5 And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" And He said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,6 but get up and enter the city, and (C1)it will be told to you what you must do."7 The men who traveled with him (C1)stood speechless, (C2)hearing the (F1)voice but seeing no one.8 Saul got up from the ground, and (C1)though his eyes were open, he (F1)could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into (C2)Damascus.9 And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

10 Now there was a disciple in (C1)Damascus named (C2)Ananias; and the Lord said to him in (C3)a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord."11 And the Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from (C1)Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying,12 and he has seen (F1)in a vision a man named Ananias come in and (C1)lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight."13 But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, (C1)how much harm he did to (C2)Your (F1)saints in Jerusalem;14 and here he (C1)has authority from the chief priests to (F1)arrest all who (C2)call on Your name."15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for (C1)he is a chosen (F1)instrument of Mine, to bear My name before (C2)the Gentiles and (C3)kings and the sons of Israel;16 for (C1)I will show him how much he must suffer in behalf of My name."17 So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after (C1)laying his hands on him said, "(C2)Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be (C3)filled with the Holy Spirit."18 And immediately something like fish scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized;

19 and he took food and was strengthened. Saul Begins to Preach Christ Now (C1)for several days he was with (C2)the disciples who were in Damascus,20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus (C1)in the synagogues, (F1)saying, "He is (C2)the Son of God."21 All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, "Is this not the one who in Jerusalem (C1)destroyed those who (C2)called on this name, and had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?"22 But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the (F1)Christ.

23 When (C1)many days had elapsed, (C2)the Jews plotted together to do away with him,24 but (C1)their plot became known to Saul. (C2)They were also closely watching the gates day and night so that they might put him to death;25 but his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.<
