Deuteronomy 33-34

Chapter 33

The Blessing by Moses

1 Now this is the blessing with which Moses (C1)the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death.2 He said,

"(C1)The LORD came from Sinai,
(C2)And (F1)dawned on them from Seir;
(C3)He shone from Mount Paran,
And He came from (C4)the midst of myriads of (F2)holy ones;
(C5)At His right hand there was (F3)flashing lightning for them.

3 "(C1)Indeed, He loves (F1)the people;
(C2)All (F2)Your holy ones are in Your hand,
(C3)And they (F3)followed in Your steps;
Everyone takes of Your words.

4 "(C1)Moses issued to us the Law,
(C2)A possession for the assembly of Jacob.

5 "(C1)And He was king in (F1)Jeshurun,
When the heads of the people gathered,
The tribes of Israel together.

6 "(C1)May Reuben live and not die,
Nor may his people be few."

7 (C1)And this was regarding Judah; so he said:

"Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah,
And bring him to his people.
With his hands he contended for (F1)them,
And may You be a help against his adversaries."

8 Of Levi he said,

"Let Your (C1)Thummim and Your Urim belong to Your (C2)godly man,
(C3)Whom You tested at Massah,
With (F1)whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;

9 (C1)Who said of his father and his mother,
'I did not consider them';
And he did not acknowledge his brothers,
Nor did he regard his own sons,
For (C2)they kept Your word,
And complied with Your covenant.

10 "(C1)They will teach Your ordinances to Jacob,
And Your Law to Israel.
(C2)They shall put (F1)incense before You,
And (C3)whole burnt offerings on Your altar.

11 "LORD, bless his strength,
And accept the work of his hands;
Smash the (F1)hips of those who rise up against him,
And those who hate him, so that they do not rise again."

12 Of Benjamin he said,

"(C1)May the beloved of the LORD live in security beside Him
(C2)Who shields him all the day long,
(C3)And he lives between His shoulders."

13 Of Joseph he said,

"(C1)Blessed of the LORD be his land,
With the choice things of heaven, with the dew,
And from the deep waters lying beneath,

14 And with the choice yield of the sun,
And the choice produce of the months;

15 And with the (F1)best things of (C1)the ancient mountains,
With the choice things of the everlasting hills,

16 And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness,
And the favor (C1)of Him who dwelt in the bush.
Let it come to the head of Joseph,
And to the top of the head of the one who was prince among his brothers.

17 "As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his,
And his horns are the horns of (C1)the wild ox;
With them he will (C2)gore the peoples
All (F1)at once, to the ends of the earth.
And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
And those are the thousands of Manasseh."

18 (C1)Of Zebulun he said,

"Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
And, Issachar, in your tents.

19 "(C1)They will call peoples to the mountain;
There they will offer (C2)righteous sacrifices;
For they will (F1)draw out (C3)the abundance of the seas,
And the hidden treasures of the sand."

20 (C1)Of Gad he said,

"Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad;
He lies down (C2)as a (F1)lion,
And tears the arm, also the crown of the head.

21 "(C1)Then he (F1)selected the choicest part for himself,
(C2)For there the ruler's portion was (F2)reserved;
(C3)And he came with the leaders of the people;
(C4)He executed the justice of the LORD,
And His ordinances with Israel."

22 (C1)Of Dan he said,

"Dan is (C2)a lion's cub;
He leaps out from Bashan."

23 Of Naphtali he said,

"(C1)Naphtali, satisfied with favor,
And full of the blessing of the LORD,
Take possession of the sea and the south."

24 (C1)Of Asher he said,

"More blessed than sons is Asher;
May he be favored by his brothers,
(C2)And may he dip his foot in olive oil.

25 "(C1)Your (F1)bars will be iron and bronze,
(C2)And as your days, so will your strength be.

26 "(C1)There is no one like the God of (F1)Jeshurun,
(C2)Who rides the heavens (F2)to your help,
And the clouds in His majesty.

27 "(C1)The eternal God is a (F1)hiding place,
(C2)And underneath are the everlasting arms;
(C3)And He drove out the enemy from you,
(C4)And said, 'Destroy!'

28 "(C1)So Israel lives in security,
(C2)The fountain of Jacob secluded,
(C3)In a land of grain and new wine;
(C4)His heavens also drip down dew.

29 "(C1)Blessed are you, Israel;
(C2)Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD,
(C3)The shield of your help,
(C4)And He who is the sword of your majesty!
(C5)So your enemies will cringe before you,
(C6)And you will trample on their high places."

Chapter 34

The Death of Moses

1 (C1)Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the LORD (C2)showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan,2 and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the (F1)(C1)western sea,3 and the (F1)Negev and the territory in the Valley of Jericho, (C1)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.4 Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land which (C1)I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your (F1)descendants'; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not go over there."5 So Moses (C1)the servant of the LORD (C2)died there in the land of Moab, in accordance with the (F1)word of the LORD.6 And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, (C1)opposite Beth-peor; but (C2)no one knows his burial place to this day.7 Although Moses was (C1)120 years old when he died, (C2)his eyesight was not dim, nor had his vigor left him.8 So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was (C1)filled with the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.10 Since that time (C1)no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom (C2)the LORD knew face to face,11 for all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land—12 and for all the mighty (F1)power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Job 20

Chapter 20

Zophar Says the Rejoicing of the Wicked Is Short

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite responded,

2 "Therefore my disquieting thoughts make me (F1)respond,
Even because of my (F2)inward agitation.

3 "I listened to (C1)the reprimand which insults me,
And the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.

4 "Do you know this from (C1)ancient times,
From the establishment of mankind on earth,

5 That the (C1)rejoicing of the wicked is short,
And (C2)the joy of the godless momentary?

6 "Though his arrogance (F1)(C1)reaches the heavens,
And his head touches the clouds,

7 He (C1)perishes forever like his refuse;
Those who have seen him (C2)will say, 'Where is he?'

8 "He flies away like a (C1)dream, and they cannot find him;
Like a vision of the night he is (C2)chased away.

9 "The (C1)eye which saw him sees him no longer,
And (C2)his place no longer beholds him.

10 "His (C1)sons (F1)favor the poor,
And his hands (C2)give back his wealth.

11 "His (C1)bones are full of his youthful strength,
But it lies down with him (F1)in the dust.

12 "Though (C1)evil tastes sweet in his mouth
And he hides it under his tongue,

13 Though he (F1)desires it and will not let it go,
But holds it (C1)in his (F2)mouth,

14 Yet his food in his stomach is changed
To the (F1)venom of cobras within him.

15 "He swallows riches,
But will (C1)vomit them up;
God will expel them from his belly.

16 "He sucks (C1)the poison of cobras;
The viper's tongue kills him.

17 "He does not look at (C1)the streams,
The rivers flowing with honey and curds.

18 "He (C1)returns the product of his labor
And cannot swallow it;
As to the riches of his trading,
He cannot even enjoy them.

19 "For he has (C1)oppressed and neglected the poor;
He has seized a house which he has not built.

20 "Because he knew no quiet (F1)within him,
He does (C1)not retain anything he desires.

21 "Nothing remains (F1)for him to devour,
Therefore (C1)his prosperity does not endure.

22 "In the fullness of his excess he will be cramped;
The (C1)hand of everyone who suffers will come against him.

23 "When he (C1)fills his belly,
God will send His fierce anger on him
And (C2)rain it on him (F1)while he is eating.

24 "He may (C1)flee from the iron weapon,
But the bronze bow will pierce him.

25 "It is drawn and comes out of his back,
Even the flashing point from (C1)his gallbladder;
(C2)Terrors come upon him,

26 Complete (C1)darkness is held in reserve for his treasures,
And unfanned (C2)fire will devour him;
It will consume the survivor in his tent.

27 "The (C1)heavens will reveal his guilt,
And the earth will rise up against him.

28 "The (C1)increase of his house will disappear;
His possessions will flow away (C2)on the day of His anger.

29 "This is a wicked person's (C1)portion from God,
The inheritance decreed to him by God."

Acts 8:1-25

Chapter 8

Saul Persecutes the Church

1 (C1)Now Saul approved of putting (F1)Stephen to death. And on that day a great persecution (F2)began against (C2)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all (C3)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and (C4)Samaria, except for the apostles.2 Some devout men buried Stephen, and mourned loudly for him.3 But (C1)Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house; and he would (C2)drag away men and women and put them in prison.

Philip in Samaria

4 Therefore, those (C1)who had been scattered went through places (F1)(C2)preaching the word.5 (C1)Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming the (F1)Christ to them.6 The crowds were paying attention with one mind to what was being said by Philip, as they heard and saw the (F1)signs which he was performing.7 For in the case of many who had (C1)unclean spirits, they were coming out of them shouting with a loud voice; and many who had been (C2)paralyzed or limped on crutches were healed.8 So there was (C1)much rejoicing in that city.

9 Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing (C1)magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, (C2)claiming to be someone great;10 and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, "(C1)This man is the Power of God that is called Great."11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his (C1)magic arts.12 But when they believed Philip (C1)as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being (C2)baptized.13 Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed (C1)signs and (C2)great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed.

14 Now when (C1)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them (C2)Peter and John,15 who came down and prayed for them (C1)that they would receive the Holy Spirit.16 (For He had (C1)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been (C2)baptized (F1)in the name of the Lord Jesus.)17 Then they (C1)began laying their hands on them, and they were (C2)receiving the Holy Spirit.18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,19 saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could (C1)acquire the gift of God with money!21 "You have (C1)no part or share in this (F1)matter, for your heart is not (C2)right before God.22 "Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (C1)if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you.23 "For I see that you are (F1)in the gall of bitterness and in (C1)the (F2)bondage of unrighteousness."24 But Simon answered and said, "(C1)Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me."

An Ethiopian Receives Christ

25 So, when they had solemnly (C1)testified and spoken (C2)the word of the Lord, they started back to Jerusalem, and were (C3)preaching the gospel to many villages of the (C4)Samaritans.<
