Deuteronomy 25-27
Chapter 25
Various Laws
1 "(C1)If there is a dispute between people and they go to (F1)court, and (F2)the judges decide their case, (C2)and they declare the righteous innocent and pronounce the wicked guilty,2 then it shall be if the wicked person (F1)(C1)deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and have him beaten in his presence with the number of lashes according to his (F2)wrongful act.3 "(C1)He may have him beaten forty times, but not more, so that he does not have him beaten with many more lashes than these, and that your brother does not (C2)become contemptible in your eyes.
4 "(C1)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.
5 "When brothers live together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. (C1)Her husband's brother shall have relations with her and take her to himself as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.6 "It shall then be that the firstborn to whom she gives birth shall (F1)assume the name of his father's deceased brother, so that (C1)his name will not be wiped out from Israel.7 "(C1)But if the man does not desire to take his brother's widow, then his brother's widow shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, 'My husband's brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband's brother to me.'8 "Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, 'I do not desire to take her,'9 (C1)then his brother's widow shall come up to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and (C2)spit in his face; and she shall (F1)declare, 'This is what is done to the man who does not build up his brother's house!'10 "And in Israel (F1)his family shall be called by the name, 'The house of him whose sandal was removed.'
11 "If two men, a man and his countryman, have a fight (F1)with each other, and the wife of one comes up to save her husband from the hand of the one who is hitting him, and she reaches out with her hand and grasps (F2)that man's genitals,12 then you shall cut off her (F1)hand; (F2)(C1)you shall not show pity.
13 "(C1)You shall not have in your bag (F1)differing weights, a large and a small.14 "You shall not have in your house (F1)differing measures, a large and a small.15 "You shall have a correct and honest (F1)weight; you shall have a correct and honest (F2)measure, (C1)so that your days may be prolonged (F3)in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.16 "For (C1)everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the LORD your God.
17 "(C1)Remember what Amalek did to you on the way when you came out of Egypt,18 how he confronted you on the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were tired and weary; and he (C1)did not (F1)fear God.19 "So it shall come about, when the LORD your God has given you (C1)rest from all your surrounding enemies in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to (F1)possess, that you shall wipe out the mention of the name Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.
Chapter 26
Offering First Fruits
1 "Then it shall be, when you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and live in it,2 that you shall take some of (C1)the first of all the produce of the ground which you bring in from your land that the LORD your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket and (C2)go to the place where the LORD your God chooses to establish His name.3 "And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, 'I declare today to the LORD (F1)my God that I have entered the land which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.'4 "Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it before the altar of the LORD your God.5 "And you shall respond and say before the LORD your God, '(C1)My father was a (F1)wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt and (F2)resided there, (C2)few in number; but there he became a (C3)great, mighty, and populous nation.6 'And the (C1)Egyptians treated us badly and oppressed us, and imposed hard labor on us.7 'Then (C1)we cried out to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our wretched condition, our trouble, and our oppression;8 (C1)and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand, an outstretched arm, and with great terror, and with signs and wonders;9 and He has brought us to this place, and has given us this land, (C1)a land flowing with milk and honey.10 'And now behold, I have brought the first of the produce of the ground (C1)which You, LORD have given me.' Then you shall set it before the LORD your God, and worship before the LORD your God;11 and you, (C1)the Levite, and the stranger who is among you shall (C2)rejoice in all the good which the LORD your God has given you and your household.
12 "(C1)When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the (F1)orphan, and to the widow, so that they may eat in your (F2)towns and be satisfied.13 "And you shall say before the LORD your God, 'I have removed the sacred portion from my house, and have also given it to the Levite, the stranger, the (F1)orphan, and the widow, in accordance with all Your commandments which You have commanded me; (C1)I have not violated or forgotten any of Your commandments.14 'I have not eaten of it while mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean, nor offered any of it to the dead. I have listened to the voice of the LORD my God; I have acted in accordance with everything that You have commanded me.15 '(C1)Look down from Your holy dwelling place, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel, and the ground which You have given us, (C2)a land flowing with milk and honey just as You swore to our fathers.'
16 "This day the LORD your God commands you to perform these statutes and ordinances. Therefore you shall be careful to perform them (C1)with all your heart and with all your soul.17 "(C1)Today you have declared the LORD to be your God, and (F1)that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His ordinances, and listen to His voice.18 "And the LORD has today declared you to be (C1)His people, His personal possession, just as He promised you, and (F1)that you are to keep all His commandments;19 and (F1)that He will (C1)put you high above all the nations which He has made, for glory, fame, and honor; and that you shall be (C2)a consecrated people to the LORD your God, just as He has spoken."
Chapter 27
The Curses at Mount Ebal
1 Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, "Keep all the commandments which I am commanding you today.2 "(C1)So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD your God is giving you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime3 and write on them all the words of this Law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, (C1)a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, (F1)promised you.4 "So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up these stones (C1)on Mount Ebal, (F1)as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime.5 "Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you (C1)shall not wield an iron tool on them.6 "You shall build the altar of the LORD your God of (F1)uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the LORD your God;7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and (C1)rejoice before the LORD your God.8 "You shall write on the (F1)stones all the words of this Law very clearly."
9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, "Be silent and listen, Israel! This day you have become a people for the LORD your God.10 "So you shall (F1)obey the LORD your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today."
11 Moses also commanded the people on that day, saying,12 "When you cross the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on (C1)Mount Gerizim to bless the people: (C2)Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.13 "For the curse, these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.14 "The Levites shall then respond and say to all the people of Israel with a loud voice,
15 'Cursed is the person who makes (C1)a carved image or cast metal image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' And (C2)all the people shall reply and say, 'Amen.'
16 '(C1)Cursed is one who treats his father or mother contemptuously.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
17 '(C1)Cursed is one who displaces his neighbor's boundary marker.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
18 '(C1)Cursed is one who misleads a person who is blind on the road.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
19 '(C1)Cursed is one who distorts the justice due a stranger, an (F1)orphan, or a widow.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
20 '(C1)Cursed is he who sleeps with his father's wife, because he has (F1)uncovered his father's garment.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
21 '(C1)Cursed is one who has sexual intercourse with any animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
22 '(C1)Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or of his mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
23 '(C1)Cursed is he who sleeps with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
24 '(C1)Cursed is he who attacks his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
25 '(C1)Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to attack an innocent person.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
26 '(C1)Cursed is anyone who does not fulfill the words of this Law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'
Job 16
Chapter 16
Job Says Friends Are Miserable Comforters
1 Then Job responded,
2 "I have heard many things like these;
(F1)(C1)Miserable comforters are you all!
3 "Is there no end to (C1)windy words?
Or what provokes you that you answer?
4 "I too could speak like you,
If only (F1)I were in your place.
I could compose words against you
And (C1)shake my head at you.
5 "Or I could strengthen you with my mouth,
And the condolence of my lips could lessen your pain.
Job Says God Shattered Him
6 "If I speak, (C1)my pain is not lessened,
And if I refrain, what pain leaves me?
7 "But now He has (C1)exhausted me;
You have laid (C2)waste all my group of loved ones.
8 "And You have shriveled me up,
(F1)(C1)It has become a witness;
And my (C2)infirmity rises up against me,
It testifies to my face.
9 "His anger has (C1)torn me and (F1)hunted me down,
He has (C2)gnashed at me with His teeth;
My (C3)enemy (F2)glares at me.
10 "They have (C1)gaped at me with their mouths,
They have (F1)(C2)slapped me on the cheek with contempt;
They have (C3)massed themselves against me.
11 "God hands me over to criminals,
And tosses me into the hands of the wicked.
12 "I was at ease, but (C1)He shattered me,
And He has grasped me by my neck and shaken me to pieces;
He has also set me up as His (C2)target.
13 "His (C1)arrows surround me.
He splits my kidneys open without mercy;
He pours out (C2)my bile on the ground.
14 "He (C1)breaks through me with breach after breach;
He (C2)runs at me like a warrior.
15 "I have sewed (C1)sackcloth over my skin,
And (C2)thrust my horn in the dust.
16 "My face is flushed from (C1)weeping,
(C2)And deep darkness is on my eyelids,
17 Although there is no (C1)violence in my hands,
And (C2)my prayer is pure.
18 "Earth, do not cover my blood,
And may there be no resting place for my cry.
19 "Even now, behold, (C1)my witness is in heaven,
And my (F1)advocate is (C2)on high.
20 "My friends are my scoffers;
(C1)My eye weeps to God,
21 That one might plead for a man with God
As a son of man with his neighbor!
22 "For when a few years are past,
I shall go the way (C1)of no return.
Acts 5:17-42
Chapter 5
17 But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is (C1)the sect of (C2)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.18 They laid hands on the apostles and (C1)put them in a public prison.19 But during the night (C1)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said,20 "Go, stand and (F1)speak to the people in the temple area (F2)(C1)the whole message of this Life."21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area (C1)about daybreak and began to teach.
27 When they had brought them, they had them stand (F1)before (C1)the Council. The high priest interrogated them,28 saying, "We gave you (C1)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and (F1)yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and (C2)intend to bring this Man's blood upon us."29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "(C1)We must obey God rather than men.30 "(C1)The God of our fathers (C2)raised up Jesus, whom you (C3)put to death by hanging Him on (F1)(C4)a cross.31 "(C1)He is the One whom God exalted (F1)to His right hand as a (F2)(C2)Prince and a (C3)Savior, to grant (C4)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.32 "And we are (C1)witnesses (F1)of these things; and (C2)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."
Gamaliel's Counsel
33 But when they heard this, they became (C1)infuriated and nearly decided to execute them.34 But a Pharisee named (C1)Gamaliel, a (C2)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in (C3)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time.35 And he said to them, "Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men.36 "For, some time ago Theudas appeared, (C1)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. (F1)But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing.37 "After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of (C1)the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered.38 "And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or (F1)movement (C1)is men, it will be overthrown;39 but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found (C1)fighting against God."
40 They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they (C1)flogged them and ordered them not to (F1)speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.41 So they went on their way from the presence of the (F1)(C1)Council, (C2)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame (C3)for His name.42 (C1)And every day, in the temple and (F1)from house to house, they did not stop teaching and (C2)preaching the good news of Jesus as the (F2)Christ.
