Deuteronomy 17-18
Chapter 17
Administration of Justice
1 "(C1)You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep which has a blemish or any (F1)defect, for that is a detestable thing to the LORD your God.
2 "(C1)If there is found in your midst, in any of your (F1)towns which the LORD your God is giving you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, by violating His covenant,3 and that person has gone and (C1)served other gods and worshiped them, (C2)or the sun, the moon, or any of the heavenly (F1)lights, (C3)which I have commanded not to do,4 and if it is reported to you and you have heard about it, then you shall investigate thoroughly. And (F1)if it is true and the report is trustworthy that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,5 then you are to bring out to your gates that man or woman who has done this evil deed, that is, the man or the woman, and (C1)you shall stone them to (F1)death.6 "(C1)On the (F1)testimony of two witnesses or three witnesses, the (F2)condemned shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the (F1)testimony of only one witness.7 "(C1)The hands of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. (C2)So you shall eliminate the evil from your midst.
8 "(C1)If a case is too difficult for you to decide, between (F1)one kind of homicide or another, between (F2)one kind of lawsuit or another, and between (F3)one kind of assault or another, that are cases of dispute in your (F4)courts, then you shall arise and go up to (C2)the place which the LORD your God chooses.9 "So you shall come to (C1)the Levitical priests or the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall inquire of them and they will declare to you the (F1)verdict.10 "Then you shall act in accordance with the (F1)terms of the verdict which they declare to you from that place which the LORD chooses; and you shall be careful to act in accordance with everything that they instruct you to do.11 "(C1)In accordance with the (F1)terms of the law about which they instruct you, and in accordance with the verdict which they tell you, you shall act; you shall not turn aside from the word which they declare to you, to the right or the left.12 "But the person who acts (C1)insolently by not listening to the priest who stands there to serve the LORD your God, nor to the judge, that person shall die; so you shall eliminate the evil from Israel.13 "Then all the people will hear and be afraid, and will not act (C1)insolently again.
14 "When you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and you (C1)take possession of it and live in it, and you say, '(C2)I will appoint a king over me like all the nations who are around me,'15 you shall in fact appoint a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses. One (C1)from among your countrymen you shall appoint as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves, anyone who is not your countryman.16 "(C1)In any case, he is not to acquire many horses for himself, nor shall he (C2)make the people return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since (C3)the LORD has said to you, 'You shall never again return that way.'17 "And (C1)he shall not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.
18 "Now it shall come about, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this Law on a scroll (F1)(C1)in the presence of the Levitical priests.19 "And it shall be with him, and he shall read it (C1)all the days of his life, so that he will learn to fear the LORD his God, (F1)by carefully following all the words of this Law and these statutes,20 so that his heart will not be haughty toward his countrymen, (C1)and that he will not turn away from the commandment to the right or the left, so that he and his sons may (F1)live long in his kingdom in the midst of Israel.
Chapter 18
Portion for the Levites
1 "(C1)The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall not have a portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the LORD'S offerings by fire and His (F1)property.2 "(C1)They shall not have an inheritance among their countrymen; the LORD is their inheritance, as He (F1)promised them.
3 "(C1)Now this shall be the priests' portion from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, either an ox or a sheep: they shall give the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the stomach.4 "You shall give him the (C1)first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first fleece of your sheep.5 "(C1)For the LORD your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to (C2)stand to serve in the name of the LORD always.
6 "Now if a Levite comes from any of your (F1)towns throughout Israel where he (C1)resides, and he comes (F2)whenever he desires to the place which the LORD chooses,7 then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.8 "(C1)They shall eat (F1)equal portions, except for what they receive from the sale of their fathers' estates.
Spiritism Forbidden
9 "When you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to (F1)(C1)imitate the detestable things of those nations.10 "There shall not be found among you anyone (C1)who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, a (C2)soothsayer, one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,11 or one who casts a spell, (C1)or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who consults the dead.12 "For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and (C1)because of these detestable things the LORD your God is going to drive them out before you.13 "(C1)You are to be blameless before the LORD your God.14 "For these nations, which you are going to dispossess, listen to (C1)soothsayers and diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.
15 "(C1)The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen; to him you shall listen.16 "This is (C1)in accordance with everything that you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Do not let me hear the voice of the LORD my God again, and do not let me see this great fire anymore, or I will die!'17 "And (C1)the LORD said to me, 'They have (F1)spoken well.18 'I will raise up for them a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and (C1)I will put My words in his mouth, and (C2)he shall speak to them everything that I command him.19 '(C1)And it shall come about that whoever does not listen to My words which he speaks in My name, I Myself will (F1)require it of him.20 'But the prophet who speaks a word (C1)presumptuously in My name, a word which I have not commanded him to speak, or (C2)which he speaks in the name of other gods, (F1)that prophet shall die.'21 "And if you say in your heart, 'How will we recognize the word which the LORD has not spoken?'22 "(C1)When the prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it (C2)presumptuously; you are not to be afraid of him.
Job 12
Chapter 12
Job Chides His Accusers
1 Then Job responded,
2 "Truly then (C1)you are the people,
And with you wisdom will die!
3 "But (C1)I have intelligence as well as you;
I am not inferior to you.
And (F1)who does not know such things as these?
4 "I am a (C1)joke to (F1)my friends,
The one who called on God and He answered him;
The just and (C2)blameless man is a joke.
5 "(F1)He who is at ease holds disaster in contempt,
As prepared for those whose feet slip.
6 "The (C1)tents of the destroyers prosper,
And those who provoke God (C2)are secure,
(F1)Whom God brings (C3)into their power.
7 "But just ask the animals, and have them teach you;
And the birds of the sky, and have them tell you.
8 "Or speak to the earth, and have it teach you;
And have the fish of the sea tell you.
9 "Who among all these does not know
That (C1)the hand of the LORD has done this,
10 (C1)In whose hand is the life of every living thing,
And (C2)the breath of all mankind?
11 "Does (C1)the ear not put words to the test,
As the palate (F1)tastes its food?
12 "Wisdom is with the (C1)aged,
And with (F1)long life comes understanding.
Job Speaks of the Power of God
13 "(C1)Wisdom and (C1)might are with Him;
Advice and (C2)understanding belong to Him.
14 "Behold, He (C1)tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt;
He (F1)(C2)imprisons a person, and (F2)there is no release.
15 "Behold, He (C1)restrains the waters, and they dry up;
And He (C2)sends them out, and they (F1)inundate the earth.
16 "Strength and sound wisdom are with Him.
One who (C1)goes astray and one who leads astray belong to Him.
17 "He makes (C1)advisers walk (F1)barefoot
And makes fools of (C2)judges.
18 "He (C1)undoes the binding of kings,
And ties a loincloth around their waist.
19 "He makes priests walk (F1)barefoot,
And overthrows (C1)the secure ones.
20 "He deprives the trusted ones of speech,
And (C1)takes away the discernment of the elders.
21 "He (C1)pours contempt on nobles,
And (C2)loosens the belt of the strong.
22 "He (C1)reveals mysteries from the darkness,
And brings the deep darkness into light.
23 "He (C1)makes the nations great, then destroys them;
He (F1)enlarges the nations, then leads them away.
24 "He (C1)deprives the leaders of the earth's people of (F1)intelligence
And makes them wander in a pathless wasteland.
25 "They (C1)grope in darkness with no light,
And He makes them (C2)stagger like a drunken person.
Acts 3
Chapter 3
Healing the Beggar Who Was Unable to Walk
1 Now (C1)Peter and John were going up to the temple at the (F1)ninth hour, (C2)the hour of prayer.2 And (C1)a man who had been unable to walk from (F1)birth was being carried, whom they (C2)used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (C3)in order for him to beg for charitable gifts from those entering the temple grounds.3 When he saw (C1)Peter and John about to go into the temple grounds, he began asking to receive a charitable gift.4 But Peter, along with John, (C1)looked at him intently and said, "Look at us!"5 And he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.6 But Peter said, "I do not have silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: (C1)In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!"7 And grasping him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened.8 And (C1)leaping up, he stood and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.9 And (C1)all the people saw him walking and praising God;10 and they recognized him as being the very one who used to (C1)sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg for charitable gifts, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Peter's Second Sermon
11 While he was clinging to (C1)Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the (F1)(C2)portico named Solomon's, completely astonished.12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, "Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why are you staring at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him walk?13 "(C1)The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (C2)the God of our fathers, has glorified His (F1)(C3)Servant Jesus, the one whom (C4)you handed over and disowned in the presence of (C5)Pilate, when he had (C6)decided to release Him.14 "But you disowned (C1)the Holy and Righteous One, and (C2)asked for a murderer to be granted to you,15 but put to death the (F1)(C1)Prince of life, whom (C2)God raised from the dead, (F2)a fact to which we are (C3)witnesses.16 "And on the basis of faith (C1)in His name, it is (F1)the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.
17 "And now, brothers, I know that you acted (C1)in ignorance, just as your (C2)rulers also did.18 "But the things which (C1)God previously announced by the mouths of all the prophets, (C2)that His (F1)Christ would suffer, He has fulfilled in this way.19 "Therefore (C1)repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that (C2)times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;20 and that He may send Jesus, the (F1)Christ appointed for you,21 (C1)whom heaven must receive until the (F1)period of (C2)restoration of all things, about which (C3)God spoke by the mouths of His holy prophets from ancient times.22 "Moses said, '(C1)THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR COUNTRYMEN; TO HIM YOU SHALL LISTEN regarding everything He says to you.23 '(C1)And it shall be that every (C2)soul that does not listen to that prophet (C3)shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.'24 "And likewise, (C1)all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and his successors onward, have also announced these days.25 "It is you who are (C1)the sons of the prophets and of the (C2)covenant which God ordained with your fathers, saying to Abraham, '(C3)AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.'26 "God (C1)raised up His (F1)Servant for you (C2)first, and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways."
