Deuteronomy 5-6
Chapter 5
The Ten Commandments Repeated
1 Now Moses summoned all Israel and said to them:
6 '(C1)I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of (F1)slavery.
7 '(C1)You shall have no other gods besides Me.
8 '(C1)You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any (F1)likeness of what is in heaven above (F2)or on the earth beneath (F2)or in the water under the earth.9 'You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, (C1)inflicting the (F1)punishment of the fathers on the children, (F2)even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,10 but (C1)showing (F1)favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11 '(C1)You shall not take the name of the LORD your God (F1)in vain, for the LORD will not (F2)leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain.
12 '(C1)Keep the Sabbath day to treat it as holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.13 'For six days you (F1)shall labor and do all your work,14 but (C1)the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; you shall not do any work that day, you or your son or your daughter, or your male slave or your female slave, or your ox, your donkey, or any of your cattle, or your (F1)resident who (F2)stays with you, so that your male slave and your female slave may rest as well as you.15 '(C1)And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to (F1)celebrate the Sabbath day.
16 '(C1)Honor your father and your mother, just as the LORD your God has commanded you, (C2)so that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well for you on the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
17 '(C1)You shall not murder.
18 '(C1)You shall not commit adultery.
19 '(C1)You shall not steal.
20 '(C1)You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
21 '(C1)You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.'
Moses Interceded
22 "These words the LORD spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, from the cloud, and from the thick darkness, with a great voice, and He added nothing more. (C1)He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.23 "And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.24 "You said, 'Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with mankind, yet he lives.25 '(C1)Now then, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer, then we will die!26 'For (C1)who is there of (F1)humanity who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?27 '(F1)Go near and listen to everything that the LORD our God says; then speak to us everything that the LORD our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it.'
28 "Now the LORD heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me, (C1)and the LORD said to me, 'I have heard the sound of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.29 '(C1)If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and (C2)keep all My commandments always, so that (C3)it would go well with them and with their sons forever!30 'Go, say to them, "Return to your tents."31 '(C1)But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, so that they may (F1)follow them in the land which I am giving them to possess.'32 "So you shall be careful to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; (C1)you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.33 "(C1)You shall walk (F1)entirely in the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, (C2)so that you may live and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.
Chapter 6
Obey God and Prosper
1 "Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it,2 so that you, your son, and your grandson will (C1)fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, (C2)all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.3 "Now Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them, so that (C1)it may go well for you and that you may increase greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has (F1)promised you, in (C2)a land flowing with milk and honey.
4 "(C1)Hear, Israel! The LORD is our God, the (C2)LORD is one!5 "And (C1)you shall love the LORD your God (C2)with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.6 "(C1)These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.7 "And (C1)you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.8 "(C1)You shall also tie them as a (F1)sign to your (F2)hand, and they shall be as (F3)frontlets (F4)on your forehead.9 "(C1)You shall also write them on the (F1)doorposts of your house and on your gates.
10 "Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land that He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you, (C1)great and splendid cities which you did not build,11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and carved cisterns which you did not carve out, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and (C1)you eat and are satisfied,12 be (F1)careful that (C1)you do not forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of (F2)slavery.13 "(C1)You shall (F1)fear only the LORD your God; and you shall (F2)worship Him and (C2)swear by His name.14 "(C1)You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,15 for the LORD your God who is in the midst of you is a (C1)jealous God; so follow Him, or else the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will (F1)wipe you off the face of the earth.
16 "(C1)You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, (C2)as you tested Him at Massah.17 "(C1)You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His provisions and His statutes which He has commanded you.18 "You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that (C1)it may go well for you and that you may go in and take possession of the good land which the LORD swore to give your fathers,19 by driving out all your enemies from you, as the LORD has spoken.
20 "(C1)When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What do the provisions and the statutes and the judgments mean which the LORD our God commanded you?'21 then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.22 'Moreover, the LORD provided great and terrible signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household;23 He brought us out of there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.'24 "So the LORD commanded us to (F1)follow all these statutes, (C1)to fear the LORD our God for our own good always and (C2)for our survival, as it is today.25 "And (C1)it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to (F1)follow all this commandment before the LORD our God, just as He commanded us.
Job 6
Chapter 6
Job's Friends Are No Help
1 Then Job responded,
2 "(C1)Oh if only my grief were actually weighed
And laid in the balances together with my disaster!
3 "For then it would be (C1)heavier than the sand of the seas;
For that reason my words have been rash.
4 "For the (C1)arrows of the Almighty are within me,
(F1)My spirit drinks their (C2)poison;
The (C3)terrors of God line up against me.
5 "Does the (C1)wild donkey bray over his grass,
Or does the ox low over his feed?
6 "Can something tasteless be eaten without salt,
Or is there any taste in the (F1)juice of an alkanet plant?
7 "My soul (C1)refuses to touch them;
They are like loathsome food to me.
8 "Oh, that my request might come to pass,
And that God would grant my hope!
9 "Oh, that God would (C1)decide to crush me,
That He would let loose His hand and cut me off!
10 "But it is still my comfort,
And I rejoice in unsparing pain,
That I (C1)have not (F1)denied the words of the Holy One.
11 "What is my strength, that I should wait?
And what is my end, that I should (F1)(C1)endure?
12 "Is my strength the strength of stones,
Or is my flesh bronze?
13 "Is it that my (C1)help is not within me,
And that a (C2)good outcome is driven away from me?
14 "For the (C1)despairing man there should be kindness from his friend;
So that he does not (C2)abandon the (F1)fear of the Almighty.
15 "My brothers have acted (C1)deceitfully like a (F1)wadi,
Like the torrents of (F1)wadis which drain away,
16 Which are darkened because of ice,
And into which the snow (F1)melts.
17 "When (C1)they dry up, they vanish;
When it is hot, they disappear from their place.
18 "The (F1)paths of their course wind along,
They go up into wasteland and perish.
19 "The caravans of (C1)Tema looked,
The travelers of (C2)Sheba hoped for them.
20 "They (C1)were put to shame, for they had trusted,
They came there and were humiliated.
21 "Indeed, you have now become such,
(C1)You see terrors and are afraid.
22 "Have I said, 'Give me something,'
Or, 'Offer a bribe for me from your wealth,'
23 Or, 'Save me from the hand of the enemy,'
Or, 'Redeem me from the hand of the tyrants'?
24 "Teach me, and (C1)I will be silent;
And show me how I have done wrong.
25 "How painful are honest words!
But what does your argument prove?
26 "Do you intend to rebuke my words,
When the (C1)words of one in despair belong to the wind?
27 "You would even (C1)cast lots for (C2)the orphans,
And (C3)barter over your friend.
28 "Now please look at me,
And see if I am (C1)lying to your face.
29 "Please turn away, let there be no injustice;
Turn away, (C1)my righteousness is still in it.
30 "Is there injustice on my tongue?
Does (C1)my palate not discern disasters?
Matthew 27:1-31
Chapter 27
Judas' Remorse
1 (C1)Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death;2 and they bound Him and led Him away, and (C1)handed Him over to (C2)Pilate the governor.
3 Then when (C1)Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned (C2)the thirty (F1)pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? (C1)You shall see to it yourself!"5 And he threw the pieces of silver into (C1)the temple sanctuary and left; and (C2)he went away and hanged himself.6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, "It is not lawful to put them in the temple treasury, since it is money paid for blood."7 And they conferred together and (F1)with the money bought the Potter's Field as a burial place for strangers.8 (C1)For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "(C1)AND (F1)THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel;10 (C1)AND (F1)THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, JUST AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME."
Jesus before Pilate
11 (C1)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "So You are the (C2)King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "(C3)It is as you say."12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, (C1)He did not offer any answer.13 Then Pilate (*)said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?"14 And still (C1)He did not answer him in regard to even a single (F1)charge, so the governor was greatly amazed.
15 (C1)Now at the Passover Feast the governor was accustomed to release for the (F1)people any one prisoner whom they wanted.16 And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus (C1)who is called Christ?"18 For he knew that it was because of envy that (F1)they had handed Him over.
19 And (C1)while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, "See that you have nothing to do with that (C2)righteous Man; for (F1)last night I suffered greatly (C3)in a dream because of Him."20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to (C1)ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death.21 And the governor (F1)said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas."22 Pilate (*)said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus (C1)who is called Christ?" They all (*)said, "(F1)Crucify Him!"23 But he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, "(F1)Crucify Him!"
24 Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that (C1)a riot was starting, he took water and (C2)washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of (C3)this Man's blood; (C4)you yourselves shall see."25 And all the people replied, "(C1)His blood shall be on us and on our children!"26 Then he released Barabbas (F1)for them; but after having Jesus (C1)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
27 (C1)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into (C2)the (F1)Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman (F2)(C3)cohort to Him.28 And they stripped Him and (C1)put a red (F1)cloak on Him.29 (C1)And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a (F1)reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "(C2)Hail, King of the Jews!"30 And (C1)they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head.31 (C1)And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.<
