Chapter 3
The House of David Strengthened
1 Now (C1)there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; and David became steadily stronger, while the house of Saul became steadily weaker.
2 (C1)Sons were born to David in Hebron: his firstborn was Amnon, by (C2)Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;3 and his second, Chileab, by Abigail the (F1)widow of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of (C1)Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of (C2)Geshur;4 and the fourth, (C1)Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;5 and the sixth, Ithream, by David's wife Eglah. These sons were born to David in Hebron.
Abner Joins David
6 Now it happened that while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, (C1)Abner was (F1)strengthening himself in the house of Saul.7 And Saul had a concubine whose name was (C1)Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah; and (F1)Ish-bosheth said to Abner, "Why have you gone in to my father's concubine?"8 Then Abner became very angry over Ish-bosheth's (F1)question and said, "(C1)Am I a dog's head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers and to his friends, and have not let you fall into the hands of David; yet today you call me to account for wrongdoing with (F2)that woman?9 "(C1)May God do so to (F1)me, and more so, if (C2)as the LORD has sworn to David, I do not accomplish this for him:10 (C1)to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, (C2)from Dan even to Beersheba!"11 And Ish-bosheth could no longer say a word in response to Abner, because he was afraid of him.
12 Then Abner sent messengers to David at his place, saying, "Whose is the land? Make your covenant with me, and behold, my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel over to you."13 And he said, "Good! I will make a covenant with you, only I require one thing of you, (F1)namely, that (C1)you shall not see my face unless you (C2)first bring Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see (F2)me."14 So David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, saying, "Give me my wife Michal, to whom I was betrothed (C1)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines."15 Ish-bosheth sent men and (F1)had her taken from her husband, from (F2)Paltiel the son of Laish.16 And her husband went with her, weeping as he went, (F1)following her as far as (C1)Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, "Go, return." So he returned.
17 Now Abner had a (F1)consultation with (C1)the elders of Israel, saying, "In times past you were seeking for David to be king over you.18 "Now then, do it! For the LORD has spoken regarding David, saying, '(C1)By the hand of My servant David (F1)I will save My people Israel from the hand of the Philistines, and from the hands of all their enemies.'"19 Abner also spoke (F1)to Benjamin; and in addition Abner went to speak (F1)to David in Hebron everything that seemed good to Israel and to (C1)the entire house of Benjamin.
20 Then Abner and twenty men with him came to David at Hebron. And David held a feast for Abner and the men who were with him.21 Abner said to David, "Let me set out and go and (C1)gather all Israel to my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that (C2)you may be king over all that your soul desires." So David let Abner go, and he went in peace.
22 And behold, (C1)the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought a large amount of plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, since he had let him go, and he had gone in peace.23 When Joab and all the army that was with him arrived, they informed Joab, saying, "Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has let him go on his way, and he has gone in peace."24 Then Joab came to the king and said, "What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you; why then have you let him go, so that he is already gone?25 "You know Abner the son of Ner, that he came to gain your confidence, and to learn of (C1)your (F1)going out and coming in and to find out everything that you are doing."
Joab Murders Abner
26 When Joab left David's presence, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David did not know about it.27 So when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him privately, and there (C1)he struck him in the belly, so that he died on account of the blood of his brother Asahel.28 Afterward, when David heard about this, he said, "I and my kingdom are innocent before the LORD forever of the blood of Abner the son of Ner.29 "(C1)May it turn upon the head of Joab and on all his father's house; and may there not be eliminated from the house of Joab (C2)someone who suffers a discharge, or has leprosy, or (F1)holds the spindle, or falls by the sword, or lacks bread."30 So Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner (C1)because he had put their brother Asahel to death in the battle at Gibeon.
David Mourns Abner
31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, "(C1)Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner." And King David walked behind the bier.32 And they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king raised his voice and wept at (C1)the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.33 And (C1)the king sang a song of mourning for Abner and said, "Should Abner die as a fool dies?
34 "Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put in bronze shackles;
As one falls before the (F1)wicked, you have fallen."
And all the people wept over him again.
Chapter 4
Ish-bosheth Murdered
1 Now when (F1)Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, heard that (C1)Abner had died in Hebron, (F2)(C2)his courage failed, and all Israel was horrified.2 And Saul's son had two men who were commanders of troops: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the sons of Benjamin (for (C1)Beeroth is also considered (C2)part of Benjamin,3 and the Beerothites fled to (C1)Gittaim and have lived there as strangers until this day).
4 Now (C1)Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son who was disabled in both feet. He was five years old when the (C2)news of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse picked him up and fled. But it happened that in her hurry to flee, he fell and could no longer walk. And his name was (F1)(C3)Mephibosheth.
5 So the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, departed and came to the house of (C1)Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day, while he was taking his midday rest.6 (F1)And they came to the interior of the house as if (F2)to get wheat, and (C1)they struck him in the belly; and Rechab and his brother Baanah escaped.7 Now when they had come into the house, as he was lying on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and killed him, and they beheaded him. And they took his head and (F1)(C1)traveled by way of the Arabah all night.8 Then they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron, and said to the king, "Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth (C1)the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life; so the LORD has given my lord the king vengeance this day on Saul and his (F1)descendants."
9 But David replied to Rechab and his brother Baanah, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, "As the LORD lives, (C1)who has redeemed my life from all distress,10 (C1)when the one who informed me, saying, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' also (F1)viewed himself as the bearer of good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news.11 "How much more, when wicked men have killed a righteous man in his own house on his bed, shall I not now (C1)require his blood from your hands and eliminate you both from the earth?"12 Then (C1)David commanded the young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet, and hung them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth (C2)and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.
Chapter 5
David King over All Israel
1 (C1)Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and (F1)said, "Behold, we are (C2)your bone and your flesh.2 "Previously, when Saul was king over us, (C1)you were the one who led Israel (F1)out and in. And the LORD said to you, '(C2)You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be (C3)a leader over Israel.'"3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David (C1)made a covenant with them before the LORD in Hebron; then (C2)they anointed David king over Israel.4 David was (C1)thirty years old when he became king, and (C2)he reigned for forty years.5 At Hebron (C1)he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
6 (C1)Now the king and his men went to (C2)Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land; and they said to (F1)David, "You shall not come in here, but even those who are blind and those who limp will turn you away," (F2)thinking, "David cannot enter here."7 Nevertheless, David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is, (C1)the city of David.8 And David said on that day, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites is to reach those who limp and those who are blind, who are hated by David's soul, through the water tunnel." For that reason they say, "People who are blind and people who limp shall not come into the house."9 So David lived in the stronghold, and called it (C1)the city of David. And David built all around from the (F1)(C2)Millo and inward.10 (C1)David became greater and greater, for the LORD God of armies was with him.
11 (C1)Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, carpenters, and (F1)stonemasons; and they built a house for David.12 And David realized that the LORD had appointed him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13 Meanwhile (C1)David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David.14 Now (C1)these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,16 Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
War with the Philistines
17 Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, (C1)all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard about it, he went down to the (C2)stronghold.18 Now the Philistines came and overran (C1)the Valley of Rephaim.19 So (C1)David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You hand them over to me?" And (C2)the LORD said to David, "Go up, for I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you."20 Then David came to (C1)Baal-perazim and (F1)defeated them there; and he said, "The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters." Therefore he named that place (F2)Baal-perazim.21 And the Philistines abandoned their idols there, so (C1)David and his men carried them away.
22 Now (C1)the Philistines came up once again and overran the Valley of Rephaim.23 So (C1)David inquired of the LORD, but He said, "You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the baka-shrubs.24 "And it shall be, when (C1)you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baka-shrubs, then you shall (F1)act promptly, for then (C2)the LORD will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines."25 Then David did so, just as the LORD had commanded him; he struck and killed the Philistines from (F1)(C1)Geba (F2)as far as (C2)Gezer.
Chapter 6
Peril in Moving the Ark
1 (C1)Now David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand.2 And David (F1)departed from (F2)(C1)Baale-judah, with all the people who were with him, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the (C2)Name, the very name of the LORD of armies who (C3)is (F3)enthroned above the cherubim.3 They had mounted the ark of God on (C1)a new cart and moved it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were leading the new cart.4 So (C1)they brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Ahio was walking ahead of the ark.5 Meanwhile, David and all the house of Israel (C1)were celebrating before the LORD (C2)with all kinds of instruments made of juniper wood, and with (F1)lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.
6 But when they came to the (C1)threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah (C2)reached out toward the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen nearly overturned it.7 And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and (C1)God struck him down there for (F1)his irreverence; and he died there by the ark of God.8 Then David became angry because (F1)of the LORD'S outburst against Uzzah; and that place has been called (F2)Perez-uzzah to this day.9 So (C1)David was afraid of the LORD that day; and he said, "How can the ark of the LORD come to me?"10 And David was unwilling to move the ark of the LORD into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of (C1)Obed-edom, the Gittite.11 The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD (C1)blessed Obed-edom and all his household.<
