Deuteronomy 5,6,7

The Ten Commandments Repeated

1 Now Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances which I am speaking today (F1)for you to hear, so that you may learn them and be careful to do them.2 "The LORD our God made (C1)a covenant with us at Horeb.3 "(C1)The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, all (F1)of us who are alive here today.4 "The LORD spoke with you (C1)face to face at the mountain (C2)from the midst of the fire,5 while (C1)I was standing between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; (C2)for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up on the mountain. (F1)He said,

6 '(C1)I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of (F1)slavery.

7 '(C1)You shall have no other gods besides Me.

8 '(C1)You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any (F1)likeness of what is in heaven above (F2)or on the earth beneath (F2)or in the water under the earth.9 'You shall not worship them nor serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, (C1)inflicting the (F1)punishment of the fathers on the children, (F2)even on the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,10 but (C1)showing (F1)favor to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

11 '(C1)You shall not take the name of the LORD your God (F1)in vain, for the LORD will not (F2)leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain.

12 '(C1)Keep the Sabbath day to treat it as holy, as the LORD your God commanded you.13 'For six days you (F1)shall labor and do all your work,14 but (C1)the seventh day is a Sabbath of the LORD your God; you shall not do any work that day, you or your son or your daughter, or your male slave or your female slave, or your ox, your donkey, or any of your cattle, or your (F1)resident who (F2)stays with you, so that your male slave and your female slave may rest as well as you.15 '(C1)And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to (F1)celebrate the Sabbath day.

16 '(C1)Honor your father and your mother, just as the LORD your God has commanded you, (C2)so that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well for you on the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

17 '(C1)You shall not murder.

18 '(C1)You shall not commit adultery.

19 '(C1)You shall not steal.

20 '(C1)You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

21 '(C1)You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.'

Moses Interceded

22 "These words the LORD spoke to your whole assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, from the cloud, and from the thick darkness, with a great voice, and He added nothing more. (C1)He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.23 "And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.24 "You said, 'Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with mankind, yet he lives.25 '(C1)Now then, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer, then we will die!26 'For (C1)who is there of (F1)humanity who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?27 '(F1)Go near and listen to everything that the LORD our God says; then speak to us everything that the LORD our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it.'

28 "Now the LORD heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me, (C1)and the LORD said to me, 'I have heard the sound of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken.29 '(C1)If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and (C2)keep all My commandments always, so that (C3)it would go well with them and with their sons forever!30 'Go, say to them, "Return to your tents."31 '(C1)But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments which you shall teach them, so that they may (F1)follow them in the land which I am giving them to possess.'32 "So you shall be careful to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; (C1)you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.33 "(C1)You shall walk (F1)entirely in the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, (C2)so that you may live and that it may be well for you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

Obey God and Prosper

1 "Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it,2 so that you, your son, and your grandson will (C1)fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, (C2)all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.3 "Now Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them, so that (C1)it may go well for you and that you may increase greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has (F1)promised you, in (C2)a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 "(C1)Hear, Israel! The LORD is our God, the (C2)LORD is one!5 "And (C1)you shall love the LORD your God (C2)with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.6 "(C1)These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.7 "And (C1)you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.8 "(C1)You shall also tie them as a (F1)sign to your (F2)hand, and they shall be as (F3)frontlets (F4)on your forehead.9 "(C1)You shall also write them on the (F1)doorposts of your house and on your gates.

10 "Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land that He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give you, (C1)great and splendid cities which you did not build,11 and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and carved cisterns which you did not carve out, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and (C1)you eat and are satisfied,12 be (F1)careful that (C1)you do not forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of (F2)slavery.13 "(C1)You shall (F1)fear only the LORD your God; and you shall (F2)worship Him and (C2)swear by His name.14 "(C1)You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you,15 for the LORD your God who is in the midst of you is a (C1)jealous God; so follow Him, or else the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will (F1)wipe you off the face of the earth.

16 "(C1)You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, (C2)as you tested Him at Massah.17 "(C1)You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His provisions and His statutes which He has commanded you.18 "You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD, so that (C1)it may go well for you and that you may go in and take possession of the good land which the LORD swore to give your fathers,19 by driving out all your enemies from you, as the LORD has spoken.

20 "(C1)When your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What do the provisions and the statutes and the judgments mean which the LORD our God commanded you?'21 then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.22 'Moreover, the LORD provided great and terrible signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh, and all his household;23 He brought us out of there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.'24 "So the LORD commanded us to (F1)follow all these statutes, (C1)to fear the LORD our God for our own good always and (C2)for our survival, as it is today.25 "And (C1)it will be righteousness for us if we are careful to (F1)follow all this commandment before the LORD our God, just as He commanded us.

Warnings

1 "(C1)When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to take possession of it, and He drives away many nations from before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, (C2)seven nations greater and mightier than you,2 and when the LORD your God turns them over to you and you (F1)defeat them, (C1)you shall (F2)utterly destroy them. (C2)You shall not make a covenant with them (C3)nor be gracious to them.3 "Furthermore, (C1)you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your (F1)daughters to (F2)their sons, nor shall you take (F3)their daughters for your (F4)sons.4 "For (F1)they will turn your (F2)sons away from (F3)following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you and (C1)He will quickly destroy you.5 "But this is what you shall do to them: (C1)you shall tear down their altars, smash their memorial stones, cut their (F1)Asherim to pieces, and burn their carved images in the fire.6 "For you are (C1)a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be (C2)a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the (F1)earth.

7 "(C1)The LORD did not (F1)make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples,8 but because the LORD loved you and kept the (C1)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (C2)the LORD brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of (F1)slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.9 "Know therefore that the LORD your God, (C1)He is God, (C2)the faithful God, (C3)who keeps (F1)His covenant and (F1)His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who (C4)love Him and keep His commandments;10 but He (C1)repays those who hate Him to (F1)their faces, to eliminate (F2)them; He will not hesitate toward him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face.11 "Therefore, you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

Promises of God

12 "(C1)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the LORD your God will keep (F1)His covenant with you and (F1)His faithfulness which He swore to your forefathers.13 "And He will (C1)love you, bless you, and (C2)make you numerous; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the newborn of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, (F1)in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you.14 "You shall be blessed above all peoples; there will be no sterile male or (C1)infertile female among you or among your cattle.15 "And (C1)the LORD will remove from you all sickness; and He will not inflict upon you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known, but He will give them to all who hate you.16 "You shall consume all the peoples whom the LORD your God will turn over to you; (C1)your eye shall not pity them, nor shall you serve their gods, for that would be (C2)a snare to you.

17 "If you say in your heart, 'These nations are greater than I; how can I (C1)dispossess them?'18 you are not to be afraid of them; you shall (C1)remember well what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt:19 (C1)the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders, and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the LORD your God brought you out. The LORD your God will do the same to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.20 "Indeed, the LORD your God will send (C1)the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish.21 "You are not to be terrified of them, because (C1)the LORD your God is in your midst, (C2)a great and awesome God.22 "(C1)And the LORD your God will drive away these nations from you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, otherwise the (F1)wild animals would become too numerous for you.23 "(C1)But the LORD your God will turn them over to you, and will (F1)throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed.24 "(C1)And He will hand over their kings to you, so that you will eliminate their name from under heaven; (C2)no one will be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them.25 "The carved images of their gods you are to (C1)burn with fire; you shall (C2)not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be (C3)trapped by it; for it is an (C4)abomination to the LORD your God.26 "And you shall not bring an abomination into your house and become (C1)designated for destruction, like it; you are to utterly detest it, and you are to utterly loathe it, for it is something designated for destruction.

Luke 3

Chapter 3

John the Baptist Preaches

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when (C1)Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and (C2)Herod was tetrarch of Galilee and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,2 in the high priesthood of (C1)Annas and (C2)Caiaphas, (C3)the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.3 And he came into all (C1)the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance (F1)for the forgiveness of sins;4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

"(C1)THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING (F1)OUT IN THE WILDERNESS,
'PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!

5 '(C1)EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED,
AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE LOWERED;
THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT,
AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH;

6 (C1)AND ALL (F1)FLESH WILL (C2)SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD!'"

7 So he was saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, "(C1)You (F1)offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 "Therefore produce fruits that are consistent with repentance, and (C1)do not start saying (F1)to yourselves, '(C2)We have Abraham as our father,' for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children for Abraham.9 "But indeed the axe is already being laid at the root of the trees; so (C1)every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."

10 And the crowds were questioning him, saying, "(C1)Then what are we to do?"11 And he would answer and say to them, "The one who has two (F1)tunics is to (C1)share with the one who has none; and the one who has food is to do likewise."12 Now even (C1)tax collectors came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what are we to do?"13 And he said to them, "(F1)Collect no more than what you have been ordered to."14 And soldiers also were questioning him, saying, "What are we to do, we as well?" And he said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone, nor (F1)(C1)harass anyone, and (C2)be content with your wages."

15 Now while the people were in a state of expectation and they all were thinking carefully in their hearts about John, (C1)whether he himself perhaps was the (F1)Christ,16 (C1)John responded to them all, saying, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but He is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the straps of His sandals; He will baptize you (F1)with the Holy Spirit and fire.17 "His (C1)winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into His barn; but He will burn up the chaff with (C2)unquenchable fire."

18 So with many other exhortations he preached the gospel to the people.19 But when (C1)Herod the tetrarch was reprimanded by him regarding (C1)Herodias, his brother's wife, and regarding all the evil things which (C2)Herod had done,20 Herod also added this to them all: (C1)he locked John up in prison.

Jesus Is Baptized

21 (C1)Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while He was (C2)praying, heaven was opened,22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven: "(C1)You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased."
