Regulations about Vows
1 Moses told the leaders of the Israelite tribes, "This is what the Lord has commanded: 2 When a man makes a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to put himself under an obligation, he must not break his word; he must do whatever he has promised.(a)
3 "When a woman in her father's house during her youth makes a vow to the Lord or puts herself under an obligation, 4 and her father hears about her vow or the obligation she put herself under, and he says nothing to her, all her vows and every obligation she put herself under are binding. 5 But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, none of her vows and none of the obligations she put herself under are binding. The Lord will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
6 "If a woman marries while her vows or the rash commitment she herself made are binding, 7 and her husband hears about it and says nothing to her when he finds out, her vows are binding, and the obligations she put herself under are binding. 8 But if her husband prohibits her when he hears about it, he will cancel her vow that is binding or the rash commitment she herself made, and the Lord will forgive her.
9 "Every vow a widow or divorced woman puts herself under is binding on her.
10 "If a woman in her husband's house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath, 11 and her husband hears about it, says nothing to her, and does not prohibit her, all her vows are binding, and every obligation she put herself under is binding. 12 But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears about it, nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or her obligation, is binding. Her husband has canceled them, and the Lord will absolve her. 13 Her husband may confirm or cancel any vow or any sworn obligation to deny herself. 14 If her husband says nothing at all to her from day to day, he confirms all her vows and obligations, which are binding. He has confirmed them because he said nothing to her when he heard about them. 15 But if he cancels them after he hears about them, he will be responsible for her[a] commitment."[b]
16 These are the statutes that the Lord commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, or between a father and his daughter in his house during her youth.
Luke 1:21-38
Chapter 1
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary. 22 When he did come out, he could not speak to them. Then they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept making signs to them(v) and remained speechless. 23 When the days of his ministry were completed, he went back home.
24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived and kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said, 25 "The Lord has done this for me. He has looked with favor in these days to take away my disgrace(w) among the people."
Gabriel Predicts Jesus' Birth
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel(x) was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,(y) 27 to a virgin engaged(z) to a man named Joseph, of the house of David.(aa) The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came to her and said, "Rejoice, favored woman! The Lord is with you."[i] 29 But she was deeply troubled(ab) by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her:
Do not be afraid, Mary,(ac)
for you have found favor with God.
31 Now listen:
You will conceive and give birth to a son,
and you will call His name Jesus.(ad)
32 He will be great
and will be called the Son of the Most High,(ae)
and the Lord God will give Him
the throne of His father David.(af)
33 He will reign over the house of Jacob(ag) forever,
and His kingdom will have no end.(ah)
34 Mary asked the angel, "How can this be, since I have not been intimate with a man?"[j]
35 The angel replied to her:
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,(ai)
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore, the holy One to be born
will be called the Son of God.(aj)
36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God."(ak)
38 "I am the Lord's slave,"[k] said Mary. "May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel left her.
