Chapter 11
Laws about Animals for Food
1 The LORD spoke again to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,2 "Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, '(C1)These are the creatures which you may eat from all the animals that are on the earth.3 'Whatever has a divided hoof, showing split hoofs, and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat.4 'Nevertheless, (C1)you are not to eat of these, among those which chew the cud, or among those which have a divided hoof: the camel, for though it chews cud, it does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean to you.5 'Likewise, the rock hyrax, for though it chews cud, it does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean to you.6 The (F1)rabbit also, for though it chews cud, it does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean to you.7 And the pig, for though it has a divided hoof, and so it shows a split hoof, it does not chew cud; it is unclean to you.8 'You shall not eat any of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.
9 '(C1)These you may eat, of whatever is in the water: everything that has fins and scales, in the water, in the seas, or in the rivers, you may eat.10 '(C1)But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you,11 and they shall be detestable to you; you may not eat any of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses.12 'Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is detestable to you.
Avoid the Unclean
13 'Moreover, these (C1)you shall detest among the birds; they are detestable, not to be eaten: the (F1)eagle, the vulture, and the (F2)buzzard,14 the red kite, the falcon in its kind,15 every raven in its kind,16 the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, and the hawk in its kind,17 the little owl, the cormorant, and the (F1)great owl,18 the white owl, the (F1)pelican, and the carrion vulture,19 the stork, the heron in its kinds, the hoopoe, and the bat.
20 'All the (F1)winged insects that walk on all fours are detestable to you.21 'Yet these you may eat among all the (F1)winged insects that walk on all fours: those which have jointed legs above their feet with which to jump on the earth.22 'These of them you may eat: the locust in its kinds, the devastating locust in its kinds, the cricket in its kinds, and the grasshopper in its kinds.23 'But all other (F1)winged insects which are four-footed are detestable to you.
24 'By these, moreover, you will be made unclean; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,25 and (C1)whoever picks up any of their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.26 'As for all the animals which have a divided hoof but do not show a split hoof, or do not chew the cud, they are unclean to you; whoever touches them becomes unclean.27 'Also whatever walks on its paws, among all the creatures that walk on all fours, are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean until evening,28 and the one who picks up their carcasses shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.
29 'Now these are to you the unclean among the swarming things which swarm on the earth: the mole, the mouse, and the (F1)great lizard in its kinds,30 the gecko, the (F1)crocodile, the lizard, the (F2)sand reptile, and the chameleon.31 'These are to you the unclean among all the swarming things; whoever touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.32 'Also anything on which one of them may fall when they are dead becomes unclean, including any wooden article, or clothing, or a hide, or a sack—any article (F1)of which use is made—(C1)it shall be put in the water and be unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.33 'As for any (C1)earthenware vessel into which one of them may fall, whatever is in it becomes unclean and you shall break (F1)the vessel.34 'Any of the (F1)food which may be eaten, on which water comes, shall become unclean, and any (F1)liquid which may be drunk in every vessel shall become unclean.35 'Moreover, everything on which part of their carcass may fall becomes unclean; an oven or a (F1)stove shall be smashed; they are unclean and shall continue as unclean to you.36 'Nevertheless, a spring or a cistern (F1)collecting water shall be clean, though the one who touches their carcass shall be unclean.37 'Now if a part of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing which is to be sown, it is clean.38 'But if water is put on the seed and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.
39 'Also if one of the animals dies which you have for food, the one who touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening.40 '(C1)He, too, who eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening, and the one who picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.
41 '(C1)Now every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable, not to be eaten.42 'Whatever crawls on its belly, and whatever walks on all fours, whatever has many feet, in regard to every swarming thing that swarms on the earth, you shall not eat them, because they are detestable.43 '(C1)Do not make (F1)yourselves detestable through any of the swarming things that swarm; and you shall not make yourselves unclean with them so that you become unclean.44 'For (C1)I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and (C2)be holy, because I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.45 '(C1)For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; so (C2)you shall be holy, because I am holy.'"
46 This is the law regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth,47 (C1)to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the edible creature and the creature which is not to be eaten.
Chapter 12
Laws of Motherhood
1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2 "Speak to the sons of Israel, saying:
6 '(C1)When the days of her purification are completed, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the doorway of the tent of meeting a one-year-old lamb as a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove (C2)as a (F1)sin offering.7 'Then he shall offer it before the LORD and make atonement for her, and she shall be cleansed from the (F1)flow of her blood. This is the law for her who gives birth to a child, whether a male or a female.8 'But if (F1)she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take (C1)two turtledoves or two young doves, (C2)the one as a burnt offering and the other as a (F2)sin offering; and the (C3)priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.'"

Chapter 24
Precepts and Warnings
1 Do not be (C1)envious of evil people,
Nor desire to (C2)be with them;
2 For their (F1)minds plot (C1)violence,
And their lips (C2)talk of trouble.
3 (C1)By wisdom a house is built,
And by understanding it is established;
4 And by knowledge the rooms are (C1)filled
With all precious and pleasant riches.
5 A (C1)wise man is (F1)strong,
And a person of knowledge (F2)increases power.
6 For (C1)by wise guidance you will (F1)wage war,
And (C2)in an abundance of counselors there is victory.
7 Wisdom is (C1)too exalted for a fool,
He does not open his mouth (C2)at the gate.
8 One who (C1)plans to do evil,
People will call a (F1)schemer.
9 The (C1)devising of foolishness is sin,
And the scoffer is an abomination to humanity.
10 If you (C1)show yourself lacking courage on the day of distress,
Your strength is meager.
11 (C1)Rescue those who are being taken away to death,
And those who are staggering to the slaughter, Oh hold them back!
12 If you say, "See, we did not know this,"
Does He (C1)who weighs the hearts not (C2)consider it?
And (C3)does He who (C4)watches over your soul not know it?
And will He not (F1)(C5)repay a person according to his work?
13 My son, eat (C1)honey, for it is good;
Yes, the (C2)honey from the comb is sweet to your taste;
14 Know that (C1)wisdom is the same for your soul;
If you find it, then there will be a (F1)(C2)future,
And your hope will not be cut off.
15 (C1)Do not lie in ambush, you wicked person, against the home of the righteous;
Do not destroy his resting place;
16 For a (C1)righteous person falls seven times and rises again,
But the (C2)wicked stumble in time of disaster.
17 (C1)Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
And do not let your heart rejoice when he stumbles,
18 Otherwise, the LORD will see and (F1)be displeased,
And turn His anger away from him.
19 (C1)Do not get upset because of evildoers
Or be (C2)envious of the wicked;
20 For (C1)there will be no (F1)(C2)future for the evil person;
The (C3)lamp of the wicked will be put out.
21 My son, (F1)(C1)fear the LORD and the king;
Do not get involved with those (F2)of high rank,
22 For their (C1)disaster will rise suddenly,
And who knows the ruin that can come from both of them?
23 These also are (C1)sayings of the wise:
To (F1)(C2)show partiality in judgment is not good.
24 One (C1)who says to the wicked, "You are righteous,"
(C2)Peoples will curse him, nations will scold him;
25 But (C1)for those who rebuke the wicked there will be delight,
And a good blessing will come upon them.
26 One who gives (F1)a right answer
Kisses the lips.
27 Prepare your work outside,
And (C1)make it ready for yourself in the field;
Afterward, then, build your house.
28 Do not be a (C1)witness against your neighbor for no reason,
And (C2)do not deceive with your lips.
29 (C1)Do not say, "I shall do the same to him as he has done to me;
I will (F1)repay the person according to his work."
30 I passed by the field of (F1)a lazy one,
And by the vineyard of a person (C1)lacking (F2)sense,
31 And behold, it was completely (C1)overgrown with weeds;
Its surface was covered with (C2)weeds,
And its stone (C3)wall was broken down.
32 When I saw, I (F1)reflected upon it;
I looked, and received instruction.
33 "(C1)A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest,"
34 Then your poverty will come like (F1)a drifter,
And your need like (F2)an armed man.
Matthew 11:1-19
Chapter 11
John's Questions
1 (C1)When Jesus had finished (F1)giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He went on from there (C2)to teach and (F2)preach in their cities.
2 (C1)Now while in prison, (C2)John heard about the works of Christ, and he sent word by his disciples,3 and said to Him, "Are You (C1)the Coming One, or are we to (F1)look for someone else?"4 Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see:5 (C1)those who are BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and those who limp walk, those with leprosy are cleansed and those who are deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the (C2)POOR HAVE THE (F1)GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.6 "And blessed is (F1)any person who (C1)does not (F2)take offense at Me."
Jesus' Tribute to John
7 As these disciples of John were going away, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into (C1)the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?8 "(F1)But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' (F2)palaces!9 "(F1)But what did you go out to see? (C1)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.10 "This is the one about whom it (F1)is written: '(C1)BEHOLD, I AM SENDING MY MESSENGER (F2)AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'
16 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children,17 and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not (F1)mourn.'18 "For John came neither (C1)eating nor (C2)drinking, and they say, '(C3)He has a demon!'19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a (F1)heavy drinker, (C1)a friend of tax collectors and (F2)sinners!' And yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."<
