Exodus 1,2
Israel Multiplies in Egypt
1 Now these are the (C1)names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came, each one (F1)with his household:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin;4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.5 (F1)All the people who descended from Jacob were (C1)seventy (F2)people, but Joseph was already in Egypt.6 And (C1)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.7 But the sons of Israel (C1)were fruitful and (F1)increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly (F2)mighty, so that the land was filled with them.
8 Now a new (C1)king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.9 And (C1)he said to his people, "Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are (F1)too many and too mighty for us.10 "Come, let us (C1)deal (F1)shrewdly with them, otherwise they will multiply, and (F2)in the event of war, they will also join those who hate us, and fight against us and (F3)depart from the land."11 So they appointed (C1)taskmasters over them to oppress them with (F1)(C2)hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh (C3)storage cities, Pithom and (C4)Raamses.12 But the more they oppressed them, (C1)the more they multiplied and the more they (F1)spread out, so that they dreaded the sons of Israel.13 The Egyptians (F1)used violence to compel the sons of Israel (C1)to labor;14 and they made (C1)their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they violently had them perform as slaves.
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom (F1)was named Shiphrah, and the other (F1)was named Puah;16 and he said, "When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, (C1)if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live."17 But the midwives (F1)(C1)feared God, and (C2)did not do as the king of Egypt had (F2)commanded them, but let the boys live.18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?"19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife (F1)can get to them."20 So (C1)God was good to the midwives, and (C2)the people multiplied, and became very (F1)mighty.21 And because the midwives (F1)(C1)feared God, He (F2)(C2)established (F3)households for them.22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "(C1)Every son who is born, (F1)you are to throw into (C2)the Nile, but every daughter, you are to keep alive."
The Birth of Moses
1 Now a man from (C1)the house of Levi went and (F1)married a daughter of Levi.2 And the woman conceived and gave birth to a son; and when she saw (F1)that he was (F2)(C1)beautiful, she hid him for three months.3 But when she could no longer hide him, she got him a (C1)papyrus (F1)basket and covered it with tar and pitch. Then she put the child in it and set it among the (C2)reeds by the bank of the Nile.4 (C1)And his sister stood at a distance to (F1)find out what would (F2)happen to him.
5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down (C1)to bathe at the Nile, with her female attendants walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the (F1)basket among the reeds and sent her slave woman, and she brought it to her.6 When she opened it, she (F1)saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children."7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call a woman for you who is nursing from the Hebrew women, so that she may nurse the child for you?"8 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go ahead." So the girl went and called the child's mother.9 Then Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him.10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter and (C1)he became her son. And she named him (F1)Moses, and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."
11 Now it came about in those days, (C1)when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his (F1)fellow Hebrews and looked at their (F2)(C2)hard labors; and (C3)he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his (F1)fellow Hebrews.12 So he (F1)looked this way and that, and when he saw that there was no one around, he (C1)struck and killed the Egyptian, and hid (F2)his body in the sand.13 Now he went out (C1)the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were (F1)fighting with each other; and he said to the (F2)offender, "Why are you striking your companion?"14 But he said, "(C1)Who made you a (F1)ruler and a judge over us? Do you (F2)intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and said, "Surely the matter has become known!"
Moses Escapes to Midian
15 When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But (C1)Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and (F1)settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down (C2)by a well.16 Now (C1)the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and (C2)they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but (C1)Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock.18 When they came to their father (C1)Reuel, he said, "Why have you come back so soon today?"19 They said, "An Egyptian saved us from (F1)the shepherds, and what is more, he even drew water for us and watered the flock."20 So he said to his daughters, "Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Invite him (F1)to have something to eat."21 And (C1)Moses was willing to live with the man. And he gave his daughter (C2)Zipporah to Moses.22 Then she gave birth to (C1)a son, and he named him (F1)Gershom, for he said, "I have been (C2)a stranger in a foreign land."
23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel (C1)groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and (C2)their cry for help because of their bondage ascended to God.24 So (C1)God heard their groaning; and God remembered (C2)His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.25 And (C1)God saw the sons of Israel, and God (F1)took notice of them.
Psalms 40
Chapter 40
God Sustains His Servant.
1 I (C1)waited (F1)patiently for the LORD;
And He reached down to me and (C2)heard my cry.
2 He brought me up out of the (C1)pit of (F1)destruction, out of the mud;
And (C2)He set my feet on a rock, (C3)making my footsteps firm.
3 He put a (C1)new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;
Many will (C2)see and fear
And will trust in the LORD.
4 How (C1)blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust,
And (C2)has not turned to the (F1)proud, nor to those who (C3)become involved in falsehood.
5 Many, LORD my God, are (C1)the wonders which You have done,
And Your (C2)thoughts toward us;
There is no one to compare with You.
If I would declare and speak of them,
They (C3)would be too numerous to count.
6 (C1)You have not desired (F1)sacrifice and meal offering;
You have (F2)opened my ears;
You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.
7 Then I said, "Behold, I have come;
It is (F1)written of me in the scroll of the book.
8 "(C1)I delight to do Your will, my God;
(C2)Your Law is within my (F1)heart."
9 I have (C1)proclaimed good news of righteousness in the great congregation;
Behold, I will (C2)not restrain my lips,
LORD, (C3)You know.
10 I have (C1)not hidden Your righteousness within my heart;
I have (C2)spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation;
I have not concealed Your mercy and Your truth from the great congregation.
11 You, LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me;
(F1)Your (C1)mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me.
12 For evils beyond number have (C1)surrounded me;
My (C2)guilty deeds have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see;
They are (C3)more numerous than the hairs of my head,
And my (C4)heart has (F1)failed me.
13 (C1)Be pleased, LORD, to rescue me;
(C2)Hurry, LORD, to help me.
14 May those be (C1)ashamed and humiliated together
Who (C2)seek my (F1)life to destroy it;
May those be turned back and dishonored
Who delight (F2)in my hurt.
15 May those (C1)be (F1)appalled because of their shame
Who (C2)say to me, "Aha, aha!"
16 (C1)May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
May those who love Your salvation continually (C2)say,
"The LORD be exalted!"
17 But (C1)I am afflicted and needy;
(C2)May the Lord be mindful of me.
You are my help and my savior;
Do not delay, my God.
Hebrews 6:13-20
Chapter 6
13 For (C1)when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear an oath by no one greater, He (C2)swore by Himself,14 saying, "(C1)INDEED I WILL GREATLY BLESS YOU AND I WILL GREATLY MULTIPLY YOU."15 And so, (C1)having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.16 (C1)For people swear an oath by (F1)one greater than themselves, and with them (C2)an oath serving as confirmation is an end of every dispute.17 (F1)In the same way God, desiring even more to demonstrate to (C1)the heirs of the promise (F2)(C2)the fact that His purpose is unchangeable, (F3)confirmed it with an oath,18 so that by two unchangeable things in which (C1)it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to hold firmly to (C2)the hope set before us.19 (F1)This (C1)hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and reliable and one which (C2)enters (F2)within the veil,20 (C1)where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a (C2)high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
