Genesis 49,50
Jacob's Prophecy concerning His Sons
1 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, "Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you (C1)in the (F1)days to come.
2 "Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob;
Yes, (C1)listen to Israel your father.
3 "Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and (C1)the beginning of my strength,
Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
4 "(F1)Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
(C1)Because you went up to your father's bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.
5 "(C1)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their (F1)swords are implements of violence.
6 "(C1)May my soul not enter into their council;
May my glory not be united with their assembly;
For in their anger they killed (F1)men,
And in their self-will they lamed (F2)oxen.
7 "Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
(C1)I will scatter them in Jacob,
And disperse them among Israel.
8 "As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
(C1)Your father's sons shall bow down to you.
9 "Judah is a (C1)lion's cub;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
(C2)He (F1)crouches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a (F2)lion, who (F3)dares to stir him up?
10 "(C1)The scepter will not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,
(F1)Until Shiloh comes,
And (C2)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
11 "(C1)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey's colt to the choice vine;
(C2)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 "His eyes are (F1)dull from wine,
And his teeth (F2)white from milk.
13 "(C1)Zebulun will reside at the seashore;
And he shall be (F1)a harbor for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.
14 "Issachar is a (F1)strong donkey,
(C1)Lying down between the sheepfolds.
15 "When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.
16 "(C1)Dan shall (C2)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
17 "Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned viper in the path,
That bites the horse's heels,
So that its rider falls backward.
18 "(C1)For Your salvation I wait, LORD.
19 "(C1)As for Gad, a band of raiders shall attack him,
But he will attack at their (F1)heels.
20 "(F1)(C1)As for (C2)Asher, his (F2)food shall be (F3)rich,
And he will yield royal delicacies.
21 "(C1)Naphtali is a doe let loose;
He utters beautiful words.
22 "(C1)Joseph is a fruitful (F1)branch,
A fruitful (F1)branch by a spring;
Its (F2)branches hang over a wall.
23 "The archers provoked him,
And shot at him and were hostile toward him;
24 But his (C1)bow remained (F1)firm,
And (F2)(C2)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the (C3)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is (C4)the Shepherd, (C5)the Stone of Israel),
25 From (C1)the God of your father who helps you,
And (F1)(C2)by the (F2)Almighty who blesses you
With (C3)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 "The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the (F1)furthest boundary of (C1)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
27 "Benjamin is a (F1)ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoils."
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them (F1)when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one (F2)with the blessing appropriate to him.
Jacob Dies
29 Then he commanded them and said to them, "I am about to be (C1)gathered to my people; (C2)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in (C3)the field of Ephron the Hittite,30 in the (C1)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a (F1)burial site.31 "There they buried (C1)Abraham and his wife (C2)Sarah, there they buried (C3)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah—32 the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth."33 When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew his feet into the bed and (C1)breathed his last, and was (C2)gathered to his people.Jacob Is Buried
1 Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him and kissed him.2 Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians (C1)embalmed Israel.3 Now forty days were (F1)required for (F2)it, for (F3)such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians (C1)wept for him seventy days.
4 When the days of (F1)mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak (F2)to Pharaoh, saying,5 '(C1)My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am about to die; in my grave (C2)which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now then, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'"6 Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."
7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father's household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.9 Chariots with teams of horses also went up with him; and it was a very great company.10 When they came to the (F1)threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they (C1)mourned there with a very great and (F2)sorrowful lamentation; and he (F3)observed seven days of mourning for his father.11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at (F1)the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a (F2)grievous (F3)mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore it was named (F4)Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
Burial at Machpelah
12 And so his sons did for him as he had commanded them;13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in (C1)the cave of the field of Machpelah opposite Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a (F1)burial site from Ephron the Hittite.14 And after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.15 When Joseph's brothers had seen that their father was dead, they said, "(C1)What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!"16 So they sent instructions to Joseph, saying, "Your father commanded us before he died, saying,17 'This is what you shall say to Joseph: "Please forgive, I beg you, the offense of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong."' And now, please forgive the offense of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.18 Then his brothers also came and (C1)fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants."19 But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place?20 "As for you, (C1)you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about (F1)this present result, to keep many people alive.21 "So therefore, do not be afraid; (C1)I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke (F1)kindly to them.
Death of Joseph
22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household, and Joseph lived 110 years.23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were (C1)born on Joseph's knees.24 Joseph said to his brothers, "(C1)I am about to die, but God will assuredly (F1)take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He (F2)promised on oath to (C2)Abraham, to (C3)Isaac, and to (C4)Jacob."25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will assuredly (F1)take care of you, and (C1)you shall carry my bones up from here."26 So Joseph died at the age of 110 years; and they (C1)embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
Psalms 39
Chapter 39
The Futility of Life.
1 I said, "I will (C1)keep watch over my ways
So that I (C2)do not sin with my tongue;
I will keep watch over (C3)my mouth as with a muzzle
While the wicked are in my presence."
2 I was (C1)mute (F1)and silent,
I (F2)refused to say even something good,
And my pain was stirred up.
3 My (C1)heart was hot within me,
While I was musing the fire burned;
Then I spoke with my tongue:
4 "LORD, let me know (C1)my end,
And what is the extent of my days;
Let me know how (C2)transient I am.
5 "Behold, You have made (C1)my days like (F1)hand widths,
And my (C2)lifetime as nothing in Your sight;
Certainly all mankind standing is (F2)a mere (C3)breath. Selah
6 "Certainly every person (C1)walks around as (F1)a fleeting shadow;
They certainly make an (C2)uproar for nothing;
He (C3)amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
7 "And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My (C1)hope is in You.
8 "(C1)Save me from all my wrongdoings;
Do not make me an object of (C2)reproach for the foolish.
9 "I have become (C1)mute, I do not open my mouth,
Because it is (C2)You who have done it.
10 "(C1)Remove Your plague from me;
Because of (C2)the opposition of Your hand I am (F1)perishing.
11 "With (C1)rebukes You punish a person for wrongdoing;
You (C2)consume like a moth what is precious to him;
Certainly (C3)all mankind is mere breath! Selah
12 "(C1)Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help;
Do not be silent (C2)to my tears;
For I am (C3)a stranger with You,
(C4)One who lives abroad, like all my fathers.
13 "(C1)Turn Your eyes away from me, that I may become cheerful again
Before I depart and am no more."
Hebrews 4:14-6:12
Chapter 4
14 Therefore, since we have a great (C1)high priest who has (C2)passed through the heavens, Jesus (C3)the Son of God, let's hold firmly to our (C4)confession.15 For we do not have (C1)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (C2)tempted in all things just as we are, yet (C3)without sin.16 Therefore let's (C1)approach the throne of grace with (C2)confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need.
Chapter 5
The Perfect High Priest
1 For every high priest (C1)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in (C2)things pertaining to God, in order to (C3)offer both gifts and sacrifices (C4)for sins;2 (F1)(C1)he can deal gently with the (C2)ignorant and (C3)misguided, since he himself also is (F2)(C4)clothed in weakness;3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices (C1)for sins for himself, (C2)as well as for the people.4 And (C1)no one takes the honor for himself, but receives it when he is called by God, just (C2)as Aaron also was.
5 So too Christ (C1)did not glorify Himself in becoming a (C2)high priest, but it was He who (C3)said to Him, "(C4)YOU ARE MY SON,
TODAY I HAVE FATHERED YOU";
"(C1)YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER
ACCORDING TO (C2)THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."
11 Concerning (F1)him we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become (F2)poor listeners.12 For though (F1)by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you (C1)the (F2)(C2)elementary principles of the (C3)actual words of God, and you have come to need (C4)milk and not solid food.13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an (C1)infant.14 But solid food is for (C1)the mature, who because of practice have their senses (C2)trained to (C3)distinguish between good and evil.
Chapter 6
The Danger of Falling Away
1 Therefore (C1)leaving (C2)the (F1)elementary teaching about the (F2)Christ, let us press on to (F3)(C3)maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from (C4)dead works and of faith toward God,2 of (C1)instruction about (F1)washings and (C2)laying on of hands, and about the (C3)resurrection of the dead and (C3)eternal judgment.3 And this we will do, (C1)if God permits.4 For it is (C1)impossible, in the case of those who have once been (C1)enlightened and have tasted of (C2)the heavenly gift and have been made (C3)partakers of the Holy Spirit,5 and (C1)have tasted the good (C2)word of God and the powers of (C3)the age to come,6 and then have (F1)fallen away, to (C1)restore them again to repentance, (F2)(C2)since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.7 For ground that drinks the rain which often (F1)falls on it and produces vegetation useful to those (C1)for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and (F1)(C1)close to being cursed, and (F2)it ends up being burned.
Better Things for You
9 But, (C1)beloved, we are convinced of better things regarding you, and things that (F1)accompany salvation, even though we are speaking in this way.10 For (C1)God is not unjust so as to forget (C2)your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, by having (C3)served and by still serving the (F1)saints.11 And we desire that each one of you demonstrate the same diligence (F1)so as to realize the (C1)full assurance of (C2)hope until the end,12 so that you will not be sluggish, but (C1)imitators of those who through (C2)faith and endurance (C3)inherit the promises.<
