Miraculous Signs for Moses

1 Then Moses answered, "What if they won't believe me and will not obey me but say, ‘The Lord did not appear(a) to you'?"

2 The Lord asked him, "What is that in your hand?"

"A staff," he replied.

3 Then He said, "Throw it on the ground." He threw it on the ground, and it became a snake. Moses ran from it, 4 but the Lord told him, "Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail." So he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand. 5 "This will take place," He continued, "so they will believe that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you."(b)

6 In addition the Lord said to him, "Put your hand inside your cloak." So he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, his hand was diseased, white as snow.[a](c) 7 Then He said, "Put your hand back inside your cloak." He put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out,[b] it had again become like the rest of his skin.(d) 8 "If they will not believe you and will not respond to the evidence of the first sign, they may believe the evidence of the second sign. 9 And if they don't believe even these two signs or listen to what you say, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the Nile will become blood on the ground."(e)

10 But Moses replied to the Lord , "Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent—either in the past or recently or since You have been speaking to Your servant[c]—because I am slow and hesitant in speech."[d](f)

11 Yahweh said to him, "Who made the human mouth? Who makes him mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, Yahweh?(g) 12 Now go! I will help[e] you speak and I will teach you what to say."(h)

13 Moses said, "Please, Lord, send someone else."[f]

14 Then the Lord 's anger burned against Moses, and He said, "Isn't Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, he is on his way now to meet you. He will rejoice when he sees you. 15 You will speak with him and tell him what to say.(i) I will help[g] both you and him to speak and will teach you both what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you. He will be your spokesman, and you will serve as God to him. 17 And take this staff in your hand that you will perform the signs with."(j)

Moses' Return to Egypt

18 Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, "Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt and see if they are still living."

Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."

19 Now in Midian the Lord told Moses, "Return to Egypt, for all the men who wanted to kill you are dead."(k) 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took God's staff(l) in his hand.

21 The Lord instructed Moses, "When you go back to Egypt, make sure you do all the wonders before Pharaoh that I have put within your power. But I will harden his heart[h](m) so that he won't let the people go. 22 Then you will say to Pharaoh: This is what Yahweh says: Israel is My firstborn son.(n) 23 I told you: Let My son go so that he may worship Me, but you refused to let him go. Now I will kill your firstborn son!"(o)

24 On the trip, at an overnight campsite, it happened that the Lord confronted him and sought to put him to death. 25 So Zipporah took a flint, cut off her son's foreskin, and threw it at Moses' feet.[i] Then she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood to me!"(p) 26 So He let him alone. At that time she said, "You are a bridegroom of blood," referring to the circumcision.[j]

Reunion of Moses and Aaron

27 Now the Lord had said to Aaron, "Go and meet Moses in the wilderness." So he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him.(q) 28 Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and about all the signs He had commanded him to do. 29 Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the Israelites. 30 Aaron repeated everything the Lord had said to Moses and performed the signs before the people. 31 The people believed, and when they heard that the Lord had paid attention(r) to them and that He had seen their misery,(s) they bowed down and worshiped.

Moses Confronts Pharaoh

1 Later, Moses and Aaron went in and said to Pharaoh, "This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: Let My people go, so that they may hold a festival for Me in the wilderness."(a)

2 But Pharaoh responded, "Who is Yahweh that I should obey Him by letting Israel go? I do not know anything about Yahweh, and besides, I will not let Israel go."(b)

3 Then they answered, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go on a three-day trip into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to Yahweh our God, or else He may strike us with plague or sword."

4 The king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why are you causing the people to neglect their work? Get to your work!" 5 Pharaoh also said, "Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from working."(c)

Further Oppression of Israel

6 That day Pharaoh commanded the overseers(d) of the people as well as their foremen: 7 "Don't continue to supply the people with straw for making bricks, as before. They must go and gather straw for themselves. 8 But require the same quota of bricks from them as they were making before; do not reduce it. For they are slackers—that is why they are crying out,(e) ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' 9 Impose heavier work on the men. Then they will be occupied with it and not pay attention to deceptive words."

10 So the overseers and foremen of the people went out and said to them, "This is what Pharaoh says:(f) ‘I am not giving you straw. 11 Go get straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but there will be no reduction at all in your workload.'" 12 So the people scattered throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 The overseers insisted, "Finish your assigned work each day, just as you did when straw was provided." 14 Then the Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh's slave drivers had set over the people, were beaten(g) and asked, "Why haven't you finished making your prescribed number of bricks yesterday or today, as you did before?"

15 So the Israelite foremen went in and cried for help to Pharaoh: "Why are you treating your servants this way? 16 No straw has been given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!' Look, your servants are being beaten, but it is your own people who are at fault."

17 But he said, "You are slackers. Slackers! That is why you are saying, ‘Let us go sacrifice to the Lord .' 18 Now get to work. No straw will be given to you, but you must produce the same quantity of bricks."

19 The Israelite foremen saw that they were in trouble when they were told, "You cannot reduce your daily quota of bricks." 20 When they left Pharaoh, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who stood waiting to meet them.

21 "May the Lord take note of you and judge," they said to them, "because you have made us reek in front of Pharaoh and his officials—putting a sword in their hand to kill us!"(h)

22 So Moses went back to the Lord and asked, "Lord, why have You caused trouble for this people? And why did You ever send me?(i) 23 Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in Your name he has caused trouble for this people, and You haven't delivered Your people at all."

1 But the Lord replied to Moses, "Now you are going to see what I will do to Pharaoh: he will let them go because of My strong hand; he will drive them out of his land because of My strong hand."(a)

God Promises Freedom

2 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, "I am Yahweh. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I did not reveal My name Yahweh to them.(b) 4 I also established My covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as foreigners.(c) 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered(d) My covenant.

6 "Therefore tell the Israelites: I am Yahweh, and I will deliver you from the forced labor of the Egyptians and free you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm(e) and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as My people,(f) and I will be your God. You will know(g) that I am Yahweh your God, who delivered you from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore[a](h) to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am Yahweh." 9 Moses told this to the Israelites, but they did not listen(i) to him because of their broken spirit and hard labor.

10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, 11 "Go and tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go from his land."

12 But Moses said in the Lord 's presence: "If the Israelites will not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am such a poor speaker?"[b](j) 13 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them commands concerning both the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.

Chapter 24

29 "Immediately after the tribulation(x) of those days:

The sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not shed its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the celestial powers will be shaken.

30 "Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth[m] will mourn;[n] and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.(y) 31 He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet,(z) and they will gather His elect from the four winds,(aa) from one end of the sky to the other.

The Parable of the Fig Tree

32 "Now learn this parable(ab) from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, recognize[o] that He[p] is near—at the door!(ac) 34 I assure you: This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.(ad) 35 Heaven and earth will pass away,(ae) but My words will never pass away. (af)

No One Knows the Day or Hour

36 "Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son[q] —except the Father only.(ag) 37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.(ah) 39 They didn't know[r] until the flood came and swept them all away. So this is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be: 40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and one left.(ai) 42 Therefore be alert, since you don't know what day[s] your Lord is coming.(aj) 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time[t] the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.(ak) 44 This is why you also must be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (al)

Faithful Service to the Messiah

45 "Who then is a faithful and sensible slave,(am) whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time?(an) 46 That slave whose master finds him working(ao) when he comes will be rewarded. 47 I assure you: He will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that wicked slave says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,' 49 and starts to beat his fellow slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards,(ap) 50 that slave's master will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not know. 51 He will cut him to pieces[u] and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
