Genesis 42

Chapter 42

Joseph's Brothers Sent to Egypt

1 Now (C1)Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"2 Then he said, "Look, (C1)I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from (F1)that place, (C2)so that we may live and not die."3 So ten of Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.4 But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother (C1)Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "(C2)I am afraid that harm may happen to him."5 So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, (C1)because the famine was also in the land of Canaan.

6 Now (C1)Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and (C2)bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and (C1)spoke to them harshly. He said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

8 But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although (C1)they did not recognize him.9 And Joseph (C1)remembered the dreams which he (F1)had about them, and he said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the (F2)undefended parts of our land."10 And they said to him, "No, (C1)my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.11 "We are all sons of one man; we are (C1)honest men, your servants are not spies."12 Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the (F1)undefended parts of our land!"13 But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with (C1)our father today, and (C2)one is no longer alive."14 Yet Joseph said to them, "It is as I said (F1)to you, you are spies;15 by this you will be tested: (C1)by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here!16 "Send one of you and have him get your brother, while you remain confined, so that your words may be tested, whether there is (C1)truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, you are certainly spies!"17 So he put them all together in (C1)prison for three days.

18 Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for (C1)I fear God:19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in (F1)your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,20 and (C1)bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.21 Then they said to one another, "(C1)Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; for that reason this distress has happened to us."22 Reuben answered them, saying, "(C1)Did I not tell (F1)you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? (F2)(C2)Now justice for his blood is required."23 They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.24 Then he turned away from them and (C1)wept. But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he (C2)took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.25 (C1)Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, but also to return every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And that is what was done for them.

26 So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.27 But when one of them opened his sack to give his donkey feed at the overnight campsite, he saw his (C1)money; and behold, it was in the opening of his sack!28 So he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and look, it is right in my sack!" Then their hearts (F1)sank, and they turned (F2)trembling to one another, saying, "(C1)What is this that God has done to us?"

Simeon Is Held Hostage

29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him everything that had happened to them, saying,30 "The man, the lord of the land, (C1)spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.31 "But we said to him, 'We are (C1)honest men; we are not spies.32 'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'33 "But the man, the lord of the land, said to us, '(C1)By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.34 'But bring your youngest brother to me so that I may know that you are not spies, but (F1)honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may (C1)trade in the land.'"

35 Now it came about, as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, (C1)every man's bag of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bags of money, they were afraid.36 And their father Jacob said to them, "You have (C1)deprived me of my sons: Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone, and now you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my (F1)care, and I will return him to you."38 But (F1)Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his (C1)brother is dead, and he alone is left. (C2)If harm should happen to him on the journey (F2)you are taking, then you will (C3)bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

Psalms 33

Chapter 33

Praise to the Creator and Protector.

1 (C1)Sing for joy in the LORD, you righteous ones;
Praise is (C2)becoming to the upright.

2 Give thanks to the LORD with the (C1)lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a (C2)harp of ten strings.

3 Sing to Him a (C1)new song;
Play skillfully with (C2)a shout of joy.

4 For the word of the LORD (C1)is right,
And all His work is done (C2)in faithfulness.

5 He (C1)loves righteousness and justice;
The (C2)earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.

6 By the (C1)word of the LORD the heavens were made,
And (C2)by the breath of His mouth (C3)all their (F1)lights.

7 He gathers the (C1)waters of the sea together (F1)as a heap;
He puts the depths in storehouses.

8 Let (C1)all the earth fear the LORD;
Let all the inhabitants of the world (C2)stand in awe of Him.

9 For (C1)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it (F1)stood firm.

10 The LORD (C1)nullifies the plan of nations;
He frustrates the plans of peoples.

11 The (C1)plan of the LORD stands forever,
The (C2)plans of His heart from generation to generation.

12 Blessed is the (C1)nation whose God is the LORD,
The people He has (C2)chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The LORD (C1)looks from heaven;
He (C2)sees all the sons of mankind;

14 From (C1)His dwelling place He looks out
On all the inhabitants of the earth,

15 He who (C1)fashions (F1)the hearts of them all,
He who (C2)understands all their works.

16 (C1)The king is not saved by a mighty army;
A warrior is not rescued by great strength.

17 A (C1)horse is a false hope for victory;
Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

18 Behold, (C1)the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him,
On those who (C2)wait for His faithfulness,

19 To (C1)rescue their soul from death
And to keep them alive (C2)in famine.

20 Our soul (C1)waits for the LORD;
He is our (C2)help and our shield.

21 For our (C1)heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.

22 Let Your favor, LORD, be upon us,
Just as we have waited for You.

Luke 23:26-56

Chapter 23

26 (C1)And when they led Him away, they seized a man, Simon of (C2)Cyrene, as he was coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.

27 Now following Him was a large crowd of the people, and of women who were (F1)(C1)mourning and grieving for Him.28 But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.29 "For behold, days are coming when they will say, '(C1)Blessed are those who cannot bear, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed.'30 "Then they will begin TO (C1)SAY TO THE MOUNTAINS, 'FALL ON US,' AND TO THE HILLS, 'COVER US.'31 "For if they do these things (F1)when the tree is green, what will happen (F2)when it is dry?"

32 (C1)Now two others, who were criminals, were also being led away to be put to death with Him.

The Crucifixion

33 (C1)And when they came to the place called (F1)The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.34 [(F1)But Jesus was saying, "(C1)Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."] (C2)And they cast lots, dividing His garments among themselves.35 And the people stood by, watching. And even the (C1)rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He saved others; (C2)let Him save Himself if this is the (F1)Christ of God, His Chosen One."36 The soldiers also ridiculed Him, coming up to Him, (C1)offering Him sour wine,37 and saying, "(C1)If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!"38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, "(C1)THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

39 (C1)One of the criminals who were hanged there was (F1)hurling abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the (F2)Christ? (C2)Save Yourself and us!"40 But the other responded, and rebuking him, said, "Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?41 "And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving (F1)what we deserve for our crimes; but this Man has done nothing wrong."42 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!"43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in (C1)Paradise."

44 (C1)It was now about (F1)(C2)the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until (F2)the ninth hour,45 (F1)because the sun stopped shining; and (C1)the veil of the temple was torn (F2)in two.46 And Jesus, (C1)crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, (C2)INTO YOUR HANDS I ENTRUST MY SPIRIT." And having said this, He (F1)died.47 (C1)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began (C2)praising God, saying, "This Man was in fact (F1)innocent."48 And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, (F1)(C1)beating their chests.49 (C1)And all His acquaintances and (C1)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.

Jesus Is Buried

50 (C1)And a man named Joseph, who was a (C2)member of the Council, a good and righteous man51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was (C1)waiting for the kingdom of God—52 this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.53 And he took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever lain.54 It was a (F1)(C1)preparation day, and a Sabbath was about to (F2)begin.55 Now (C1)the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid.

56 And then they returned and (C1)prepared spices and perfumes. And (C2)on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
