Chapter 40

Joseph Interprets Two Prisoners' Dreams

1 After this, the Egyptian king's cupbearer(a) and baker offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard(b) in the prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned Joseph to them, and he became their personal attendant. And they were in custody for some time.[a]

5 The Egyptian king's cupbearer and baker, who were confined in the prison, each had a dream. Both had a dream on the same night, and each dream had its own meaning. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they looked distraught. 7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"(c)

8 "We had dreams," they said to him, "but there is no one to interpret them."

Then Joseph said to them, "Don't interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams."(d)

9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph: "In my dream there was a vine in front of me. 10 On the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms came out and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand."

12 "This is its interpretation,"(e) Joseph said to him. "The three branches are three days. 13 In just three days Pharaoh will lift up your head(f) and restore you to your position. You will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand the way you used to when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well for you, remember that I was with you. Please show kindness to me by mentioning me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this prison. 15 For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews,(g) and even here I have done nothing that they should put me in the dungeon."(h)

16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was positive, he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream. Three baskets of white bread were on my head. 17 In the top basket were all sorts of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."

18 "This is its interpretation," Joseph replied. "The three baskets are three days. 19 In just three days Pharaoh will lift up your head—from off you—and hang you on a tree.[b] Then the birds will eat the flesh from your body."[c]

20 On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he gave a feast for all his servants. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.(i) 21 Pharaoh restored the chief cupbearer to his position as cupbearer, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand. 22 But Pharaoh hanged[d] the chief baker, just as Joseph had explained to them. 23 Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.(j)

Psalm 31

A Plea for Protection

For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.

1  Lord , I seek refuge in You;
let me never be disgraced.(a)
Save me by Your righteousness.
2 Listen closely to me; rescue me quickly.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a mountain fortress to save me.(b)
3 For You are my rock and my fortress;(c)
You lead and guide me
because of Your name.(d)
4 You will free me from the net
that is secretly set for me,
for You are my refuge.(e)
5 Into Your hand I entrust my spirit;(f)
You redeem[a] me, Lord , God of truth.(g)

6 I[b] hate those who are devoted to worthless idols,
but I trust in the Lord .(h)
7 I will rejoice and be glad in Your faithful love
because You have seen my affliction.
You have known the troubles of my life(i)
8 and have not handed me over to the enemy.(j)
You have set my feet in a spacious place.(k)

9 Be gracious to me, Lord ,
because I am in distress;(l)
my eyes are worn out from angry sorrow—
my whole being[c] as well.(m)
10 Indeed, my life is consumed with grief
and my years with groaning;(n)
my strength has failed
because of my sinfulness,[d]
and my bones waste away.(o)
11 I am ridiculed by all my adversaries
and even by my neighbors.
I am dreaded by my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street run from me.(p)
12 I am forgotten: gone from memory
like a dead person—like broken pottery.(q)
13 I have heard the gossip of many;
terror is on every side.(r)
When they conspired against me,
they plotted to take my life.(s)

14 But I trust in You, Lord ;
I say, "You are my God."(t)
15 The course of my life is in Your power;(u)
deliver me from the power of my enemies
and from my persecutors.(v)
16 Show Your favor to Your servant;
save me by Your faithful love.(w)
17  Lord , do not let me be disgraced when I call on You.(x)
Let the wicked be disgraced;
let them be silent[e][f] in Sheol.(y)
18 Let lying lips be quieted;(z)
they speak arrogantly against the righteous
with pride and contempt.(aa)

19 How great is Your goodness
that You have stored up for those who fear You
and accomplished in the sight of everyone
for those who take refuge in You.(ab)
20 You hide them in the protection of Your presence;
You conceal them in a shelter[g]
from the schemes of men,
from quarrelsome tongues.(ac)
21 May the Lord be praised,
for He has wonderfully shown His faithful love to me
in a city under siege.[h](ad)
22 In my alarm I had said,
"I am cut off from Your sight."(ae)
But You heard the sound of my pleading
when I cried to You for help.(af)

23 Love the Lord , all His faithful ones.(ag)
The Lord protects the loyal,
but fully repays the arrogant.(ah)
24 Be strong[i] and courageous,
all you who put your hope in the Lord .(ai)

Chapter 22

39 He went out and made His way(ar) as usual(as) to the Mount of Olives,(at) and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He reached the place,(au) He told them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation." (av) 41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray,(aw) 42 "Father, if You are willing, take this cup(ax) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done."

[43 Then an angel from heaven(ay) appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 Being in anguish,(az) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.][l] 45 When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.[m] 46 "Why are you sleeping?" He asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't enter into temptation."

The Judas Kiss

47 While(ba) He was still speaking, suddenly a mob was there, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him, 48 but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" 50 Then one of them struck the high priest's slave and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus responded, "No more of this!" [n] And touching his ear, He healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?[o] 53 Every day while I was with you in the temple complex,(bb) you never laid a hand on Me. But this is your hour(bc)—and the dominion of darkness." (bd)

Peter Denies His Lord

54 They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest's house. Meanwhile Peter(be) was following at a distance. 55 They(bf) lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard(bg) and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with Him too."

57 But he denied it: "Woman, I don't know Him!"

58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You're one of them too!"

"Man, I am not!" Peter said.

59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with Him, since he's also a Galilean."

60 But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.(bh) So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times." (bi) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

63 The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.(bj) 64 After blindfolding Him, they kept[p] asking, "Prophesy! Who hit You?" 65 And they were saying many other blasphemous(bk) things against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

66 When daylight came,(bl) the elders[q] of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,(bm) convened and brought Him before their Sanhedrin.(bn) 67 They said,(bo) "If You are the Messiah, tell us."

But He said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God." (bp)

70 They all asked, "Are You, then, the Son of God?"(bq)

And He said to them, "You say that I am." (br)

71 "Why do we need any more testimony," they said, "since we've heard it ourselves from His mouth?"
