Genesis 39
Chapter 39
Joseph in Potiphar's House
1 Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites(a) who had brought him there. 2 The Lord was with Joseph,(b) and he became a successful man, serving[a] in the household of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made everything he did successful,(c) 4 Joseph found favor in his master's sight(d) and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority.[b] 5 From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph.(e) The Lord 's blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields. 6 He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority;[c] he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.(f) 7 After some time[d] his master's wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, "Sleep with me."
8 But he refused. "Look," he said to his master's wife, "with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.[e] 9 No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?"(g)
10 Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused[f] to go to bed with her.[g] 11 Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.[h] 12 She grabbed him by his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. 13 When she saw that he had left his garment with her and had run outside, 14 she called the household servants. "Look," she said to them, "my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could. 15 When he heard me screaming for help,[i] he left his garment with me and ran outside."
16 She put Joseph's garment beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me, 18 but when I screamed for help,[j] he left his garment with me and ran outside."
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him—"These are the things your slave did to me"—he was furious 20 and had him thrown into prison,(h) where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison.
Joseph in Prison
21 But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him.(i) He granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.(j) 22 The warden put all the prisoners who were in the prison under Joseph's authority,[k] and he was responsible for everything that was done there. 23 The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph's authority,[l] because the Lord was with him, and the Lord made everything that he did successful.(k)
Psalms 30
Chapter 30
Psalm 30
Joy in the Morning
A psalm; a dedication song for the house. Davidic.
1 I will exalt You,
Lord
,
because You have lifted me up(a)
and have not allowed my enemies
to triumph over me.(b)
2
Lord
my God,
I cried to You for help, and You healed me.(c)
3
Lord
, You brought me up from Sheol;(d)
You spared me from among those
going down[a] to the Pit.(e)
4 Sing to Yahweh, you His faithful ones,
and praise His holy name.(f)
5 For His anger lasts only a moment,
but His favor, a lifetime.
Weeping may spend the night,
but there is joy in the morning.(g)
6 When I was secure, I said,
"I will never be shaken."(h)
7
Lord
, when You showed Your favor,
You made me stand like a strong mountain;(i)
when You hid Your face, I was terrified.(j)
8
Lord
, I called to You;
I sought favor from my Lord:(k)
9 "What gain is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise You?
Will it proclaim Your truth?(l)
10
Lord
, listen and be gracious to me;
Lord
, be my helper."(m)
11 You turned my lament into dancing;
You removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,(n)
12 so that I can sing to You and not be silent.
Lord
my God, I will praise You forever.(o)
Luke 22:1-38
Chapter 22
The Plot to Kill Jesus
1 The(a) Festival of Unleavened Bread,(b) which is called Passover,(c) was drawing near. 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death,(d) because they were afraid of the people.(e)
3 Then(f) Satan entered Judas,(g) called Iscariot,(h) who was numbered among the Twelve. 4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police(i) how he could hand Him over(j) to them. 5 They were glad and agreed to give him silver.[a] 6 So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them when the crowd was not present.
Preparation for Passover
7 Then(k) the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(l) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(m) saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it."
9 "Where do You want us to prepare it?" they asked Him.
10 "Listen," He said to them, "when you've entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?"' 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.(n) Make the preparations there."
13 So they went and found it just as He had told them,(o) and they prepared the Passover.
The First Lord's Supper
14 When(p) the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, "I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again[b] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." (q) 17 Then He took a cup,(r) and after giving thanks,(s) He said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
19 And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is My body,(t) which is given for you. Do this in remembrance(u) of Me."
20 In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, "This cup is the new covenant(v) established by My blood;(w) it is shed for you.[c] 21 But(x) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me! (y) 22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,(z) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!"
23 So they began to argue(aa) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.
The Dispute over Greatness
24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.(ab) 25 But He said to them,(ac) "The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called[d] ‘Benefactors.'[e] 26 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you must become like the youngest,(ad) and whoever leads, like the one serving. 27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn't it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves. (ae) 28 You are the ones who stood by Me in My trials. (af) 29 I bestow on you a kingdom,(ag) just as My Father bestowed one on Me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom.(ah) And you will sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. (ai)
Peter's Denial Predicted
31 "Simon, Simon,[f] look out! Satan(aj) has asked to sift you[g] like wheat. (ak) 32 But I have prayed(al) for you[h] that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen(am) your brothers."
33 "Lord,"(an) he told Him, "I'm ready to go with You both to prison and to death!"
34 "I tell you, Peter," He said, "the rooster will not crow today until[i] you deny three times that you know Me!"
Be Ready for Trouble
35 He also said to them, "When I sent you out(ao) without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?"
"Not a thing," they said.
36 Then He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn't have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. 37 For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted among the outlaws. (ap)[j] Yes, what is written about Me is coming to its fulfillment." (aq)
38 "Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords."
"Enough of that!" [k] He told them.
