Genesis 37

Chapter 37

Joseph's Dreams

1 Now Jacob lived in (C1)the land where his father had lived as a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2 These are the records of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, when he was (C1)seventeen years of age, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, while he was still a youth, along with (C2)the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought back a (C3)bad report about them to their father.3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons, because he was (C1)the son of his old age; and he made him a (F1)(C2)multicolored tunic.4 And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they (C1)hated him and could not speak to him (F1)on friendly terms.

5 Then Joseph (F1)(C1)had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.6 He said to them, "Please listen to this dream which I have (F1)had;7 for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf stood up and also remained standing; and behold, your sheaves gathered around and (C1)bowed down to my sheaf."8 Then his brothers said to him, "(C1)Are you actually going to reign over us? Or are you really going to rule over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

9 Then he (F1)had yet another dream, and informed his brothers of it, and said, "Behold, I have (F1)had yet another dream; and behold, the sun and the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me."10 He also told it to his father as well as to his brothers; and his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have (F1)had? Am I and your mother and (C1)your brothers actually going to come to bow down to the ground before you?"11 And (C1)his brothers were jealous of him, but his father (C2)kept the matter in mind.

12 Then his brothers went to pasture their father's flock in Shechem.13 And Israel said to Joseph, "Are your brothers not pasturing the flock in (C1)Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them." And he said to him, "(F1)I will go."14 Then he said to him, "Go now and see about the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock, and bring word back to me." So he sent him from the Valley of (C1)Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

15 A man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, "">(F1)What are you looking for?"16 He said, "I am looking for my brothers; please tell me where they are pasturing the flock."17 Then the man said, "They have moved from here; for I heard them say, 'Let's go to (C1)Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.

The Plot against Joseph

18 (F1)When they saw him from a distance, and before he came closer to them, they (C1)plotted against him to put him to death.19 They said to one another, "(F1)Here comes this dreamer!20 "Now then, come and let's kill him, and throw him into one of the pits; and (C1)we will say, 'A vicious animal devoured him.' Then we will see what will become of his dreams!"21 But (C1)Reuben heard this and rescued him out of their hands (F1)by saying, "Let's not (F2)take his life."22 Then Reuben said to them, "Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him"—so that later he might rescue him out of their hands, to return him to his father.23 So it came about, when Joseph (F1)reached his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the (F2)multicolored tunic that was on him;24 and they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty, without any water in it.

25 Then they sat down to eat (F1)a meal. But as they raised their eyes and looked, behold, a caravan of (C1)Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying (C2)labdanum resin, (C3)balsam, and (F2)myrrh, (F3)on their way to bring them down to Egypt.26 And Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it for us to kill our brother and (C1)cover up his blood?27 "(C1)Come, and let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers listened to him.28 Then some (C1)Midianite traders passed by, so they pulled him out and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and (C2)sold (F1)him to the Ishmaelites for (F2)twenty shekels of silver. So (C3)they brought Joseph into Egypt.

29 Now Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Joseph was not in the pit; so he (C1)tore his garments.30 He returned to his brothers and said, "(C1)The boy is not there; as for me, where am I to go?"31 So (C1)they took Joseph's tunic, and slaughtered a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood;32 and they sent the (F1)multicolored tunic and brought it to their father and said, "We found this; please (F2)examine it to see whether it is your son's tunic or not."33 Then he (F1)examined it and said, "It is my son's tunic. (C1)A vicious animal has devoured him; (C2)Joseph has surely been torn to pieces!"34 So Jacob (C1)tore his clothes, and put on a sackcloth undergarment over his waist, and mourned for his son many days.35 Then all his sons and all his daughters got up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. And he said, "Surely I will (C1)go down to Sheol in mourning for my son." So his father wept for him.36 Meanwhile, the (F1)Midianites (C1)sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh's officer, the captain of the bodyguard.

Psalms 28

Chapter 28

A Prayer for Help, and Praise for Its Answer.

A Psalm of David.

1 To You, LORD, I call;
My (C1)rock, do not be deaf to me,
For if You (C2)are silent to me,
I will become like those who (C3)go down to the pit.

2 Hear the (C1)sound of my pleadings when I cry to You for help,
When I (C2)raise my hands (C3)toward (F1)Your holy (C4)sanctuary.

3 (C1)Do not drag me away with the wicked
And with those who practice injustice,
Who (C2)speak peace with their neighbors,
While evil is in their hearts.

4 Give back to them (C1)according to their work and according to the evil of their practices;
Give back to them according to the work of their hands;
Repay them what is due them.

5 Because they (C1)do not regard the works of the LORD
Nor the deeds of His hands,
He will tear them down and not build them up.

6 Blessed be the LORD,
Because He (C1)has heard the sound of my pleading.

7 The LORD is my (C1)strength and my (C2)shield;
My heart (C3)trusts in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore (C4)my heart triumphs,
And with (C5)my song I shall thank Him.

8 The LORD is (F1)their (C1)strength,
And He is a refuge of (C2)salvation to His anointed.

9 (C1)Save Your people and bless (C2)Your inheritance;
Be their (C3)shepherd also, and (C4)carry them forever.

Luke 20:27-47

Chapter 20

27 (C1)Now some of the (C2)Sadducees (who maintain that there is no resurrection) came to Him,28 and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (C1)if (F1)a man's brother dies, (F2)leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to (F3)marry the wife and raise up children (F4)for his brother.29 "So then, there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;30 and the second31 and the third (F1)married her; and in the same way (F2)all seven (F3)died, leaving no children.32 "Finally the woman also died.33 "Therefore, in the resurrection, (F1)which one's wife does the woman become? For (F2)all seven (F3)married her."

34 Jesus said to them, "The sons of (C1)this age marry and the women are given in marriage,35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to (C1)that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;36 for they cannot even die anymore, for they are like angels, and are (C1)sons of God, being (F1)sons of the resurrection.37 "But as for the fact that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed this in (C1)the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord (C2)THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.38 "(C1)Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; for (C2)all live to Him."39 Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."40 For (C1)they did not have the courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 (C1)But He said to them, "How is it that they say the (F1)Christ is (C2)David's son?42 "For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

'(C1)THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
"SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

43 (C1)UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'

44 "Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and so how is He his son?"

45 (C1)And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,46 "Beware of the scribes, (C1)who like to walk around in long robes, and love personal greetings in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,47 who (F1)devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive all the more condemnation."
