Genesis 31

Chapter 31

Jacob Leaves Secretly for Canaan

1 Now (F1)Jacob heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, "Jacob has taken away all that was our father's, and from what belonged to our father he has made all this (F2)wealth."2 And Jacob saw the (F1)attitude of Laban, and behold, it was not friendly toward him as it had been before.3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, "(C1)Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and (C2)I will be with you."4 So Jacob sent word and called Rachel and Leah to his flock in the field,5 and said to them, "(C1)I see your father's (F1)attitude, that it is not friendly toward me as it was before, but (C2)the God of my father has been with me.6 "(C1)You know that I have served your father with all my strength.7 "Yet your father has (C1)cheated me and (C2)changed my wages ten times; however, (C3)God did not allow him to do me harm.8 "If (C1)he said this: 'The speckled shall be your wages,' then all the flock delivered speckled; and if he said this: 'The striped shall be your wages,' then all the flock delivered striped.9 "So God has (C1)taken away your father's livestock and given them to me.10 "And it came about at the time when the flock was breeding that I raised my eyes and saw in a dream—and behold—the male goats that were (F1)mating were striped, speckled, or mottled.11 "Then (C1)the angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob'; and I said, 'Here I am.'12 "He said, 'Now raise your eyes and see that all the male goats that are (F1)mating are striped, speckled, or mottled; for (C1)I have seen everything that Laban has been doing to you.13 'I am (C1)the God of Bethel, where you (C2)anointed a memorial stone, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, (F1)leave this land, and (C3)return to the land of your birth.'"14 Rachel and Leah said to him, "Do we still have any share or inheritance in our father's house?15 "Are we not regarded by him as foreigners? For (C1)he has sold us, and has also (F1)entirely consumed our (F2)purchase price.16 "Surely all the wealth which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and our children; now then, do whatever God has told you."

17 Then Jacob stood up and put his children and his wives on camels;18 and he drove away all his livestock and all his property which he had acquired, the livestock he possessed which he had acquired in Paddan-aram, (C1)to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac.19 Laban had gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stole the (F1)(C1)household idols that were her father's.20 And Jacob (F1)deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing.21 So he fled with all that he had; and he got up and crossed the Euphrates River, and set (F1)out for the hill country of (C1)Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 When Laban was informed on the third day that Jacob had fled,23 he took his kinsmen with him and pursued him a distance of seven days' journey, and he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.24 However, (C1)God came to Laban the Aramean in a (C2)dream of the night and said to him, "(F1)(C3)Be careful that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad."

25 And Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his kinsmen camped in the hill country of Gilead.26 Then Laban said to Jacob, "What have you done (F1)by deceiving me and carrying away my daughters like captives of the sword?27 "Why did you flee secretly and (F1)deceive me, and did not tell me, so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with (C1)tambourine and with (C2)lyre;28 and did not allow me (C1)to kiss my (F1)grandchildren and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly.29 "It is in (F1)my power to do you harm, but (C1)the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, '(F2)(C2)Be careful not to speak either good or bad to Jacob.'30 "Now you have indeed gone away because you longed greatly for your father's house; but why did you steal (C1)my gods?"31 Then Jacob replied to Laban, "Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force.32 "(C1)The one with whom you find your gods shall not live; in the presence of our relatives (F1)point out what is yours (F2)among my belongings and take it for yourself." Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

33 So Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the tent of the two slave women, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah's tent and entered Rachel's tent.34 Now Rachel had taken the (F1)household idols and put them in the camel's saddlebag, and she sat on them. So Laban searched through all the tent, but did not find them.35 And she said to her father, "May my lord not be angry that I cannot (C1)stand in your presence, because the (F1)way of women is upon me." So he searched but did not find the (F2)(C2)household idols.

36 Then Jacob became angry and argued with Laban; and Jacob said to Laban, "What is my offense? What is my sin that you have hotly pursued me?37 "Though you have searched through all my property, what have you found of all your household property? Set it here in front of my relatives and your relatives, so that they may decide between the two of us.38 "For these twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flocks.39 "I did not even bring to you that which was torn by wild animals; I took the loss myself. You demanded it of my hand whether stolen by day or stolen by night.40 "This is how I was: by day the (F1)heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.41 "For these twenty years I have been in your house; (C1)I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you (C2)changed my wages ten times.42 "If (C1)the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the fear of Isaac, had not been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (C2)God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, so He (C3)rendered judgment last night."

The Covenant of Mizpah

43 Then Laban replied to Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters, the (F1)children are my (F1)grandchildren, (C1)the flocks are my flocks, and everything that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these daughters of mine or to their children to whom they have given birth?44 "So now come, let's (C1)make a covenant, (F1)you and I, and (C2)it shall be a witness between (F2)you and me."45 Then Jacob took (C1)a stone and set it up as a memorial stone.46 Jacob said to his relatives, "Gather stones." So they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap.47 Now Laban (C1)called it (F1)Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it (F2)Galeed.48 Laban said, "(C1)This heap is a witness between (F1)you and me this day." Therefore it was named Galeed,49 and (F1)(C1)Mizpah, for he said, "May the LORD keep watch between (F2)you and me when we are (F3)absent one from the other.50 "If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no one is with us, see, (C1)God is witness between (F1)you and me."51 Laban also said to Jacob, "Behold this heap and behold the memorial stone which I have set between (F1)you and me.52 "This heap is a witness, and the memorial stone is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you for harm, and you will not pass by this heap and this memorial stone to me, for harm.53 "(C1)The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, (C2)judge between us." So Jacob swore by (C3)the fear of his father Isaac.54 Then Jacob (C1)offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his relatives to (F1)the meal; and they ate (F2)the meal and spent the night on the mountain.55 (F1)Then early in the morning Laban got up, and (C1)kissed his (F2)grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned to his place.

Psalms 24

Chapter 24

The King of Glory Entering Zion.

A Psalm of David.

1 The (C1)earth is the LORD'S, and (F1)all it contains,
The (C2)world, and those who live in it.

2 For He has (C1)founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.

3 Who may (C1)ascend onto the (C2)hill of the LORD?
And who may stand in His holy (C3)place?

4 One who has (C1)clean hands and a (C2)pure heart,
Who has not (C3)lifted up his soul to deceit
And has not (C4)sworn deceitfully.

5 He will receive a (C1)blessing from the LORD
And (F1)(C2)righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 (F1)This is the generation of those who (C1)seek Him,
Who seek Your face—even Jacob. Selah

7 (C1)Lift up your heads, you gates,
And be lifted up, you (F1)ancient doors,
That the King of (C2)glory may come in!

8 Who is the King of glory?
The LORD (C1)strong and mighty,
The LORD (C2)mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, you gates,
And lift them up, you (F1)ancient doors,
That the King of (C1)glory may come in!

10 Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of (C1)armies,
He is the King of glory. Selah

Luke 18:18-43

Chapter 18

18 (C1)A ruler questioned Him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"19 But Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me (F1)good? No one is (F1)good except God alone.20 "You know the commandments, '(C1)DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT GIVE FALSE TESTIMONY, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"21 And he said, "All these things I have kept since my youth."22 Now when Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack; (C1)sell all that you possess and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have (C2)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.24 And Jesus looked at him and said, "(C1)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!25 "For (C1)it is easier for a camel to (F1)go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!"26 Those who heard Him said, "And so who can be saved?"27 But He said, "(C1)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God."

28 Peter said, "Behold, (C1)we have left (F1)our own homes and followed You."29 And He said to them, "Truly I say to you, (C1)there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,30 who will not receive many times as much at this time, and in (C1)the age to come, eternal life."

31 Now He took the twelve aside and said to them, "Behold, (C2)we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.32 "(C1)For He will be (F1)handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon,33 and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise."34 (F1)(C1)The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

Bartimaeus Receives Sight

35 (C1)Now as (F1)(C2)Jesus was approaching Jericho, a man who was blind was sitting by the road, begging.36 But when he heard a crowd going by, he began inquiring what this was.37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.38 And he called out, saying, "Jesus, (C1)Son of David, have mercy on me!"39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, "(C1)Son of David, have mercy on me!"40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He asked him,41 "What do you want Me to do for you?" And he said, "Lord, I want to regain my sight!"42 And Jesus said to him, "Regain your sight; (C1)your faith has (F1)made you well."43 And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, (C1)glorifying God; and when (C2)all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
