Job 32,33

Elihu Rebukes Job in Anger

1 Then these three men stopped answering Job, because he was (C1)righteous in his own eyes.2 But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the (C1)Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned against Job; his anger burned (C2)because he justified himself (F1)(C3)before God.3 And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, yet they had condemned Job.4 Now Elihu had waited (F1)to speak to Job because they were years older than he.5 But when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, his anger burned.

6 So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite (F1)spoke out and said,

"I am young in years and you are (C1)old;
Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you (F2)what I think.

7 "I (F1)thought (F2)(C1)age should speak,
And (F3)increased years should teach wisdom.

8 "But it is a spirit that is in mankind,
And the (C1)breath of the Almighty gives them (C2)understanding.

9 "The (F1)abundant in years may not be wise,
Nor may (C1)elders understand justice.

10 "So I (F1)say, 'Listen to me,
I too will tell (F2)what I think.'

11 "Behold, I waited for your words,
I listened to your skillful speech,
While you (F1)pondered what to say.

12 "I also paid close attention to you;
But (F1)indeed, there was no one who refuted Job,
Not one of you who answered his words.

13 "So do not say,
'(C1)We have found wisdom:
God will (F1)defeat him, not man.'

14 "But he has not presented his words against me,
Nor will I reply to him with your (F1)arguments.

15 "They are dismayed, they no longer answer;
Words have (F1)failed them.

16 "Should I wait, because they are not speaking,
Because they have (F1)stopped and no longer answer?

17 "I too will (F1)give my share of answers;
I also will tell my opinion.

18 "For I am full of words;
The spirit within me compels me.

19 "Behold, my belly is like unvented wine;
Like new wineskins, it is about to burst.

20 "Let me speak so that I may get relief;
Let me open my lips and answer.

21 "Let me (C1)be partial to no one,
Nor flatter any man.

22 "For I do not know how to flatter,
Otherwise my Maker would quickly take me away.

Elihu Claims to Speak for God

1 "However, please (C1)hear my speech, Job,
And listen to all my words.

2 "Behold now, I open my mouth,
My tongue in my (F1)mouth speaks.

3 "My words are from the integrity of my heart,
And my lips speak (C1)knowledge sincerely.

4 "The (C1)Spirit of God has made me,
And the (C2)breath of (F1)the Almighty gives me life.

5 "(C1)Refute me if you can;
Line up against me, take your stand.

6 "Behold, I belong to God, like you;
I too have been (F1)formed out of the (C1)clay.

7 "Behold, (C1)no fear of me should terrify you,
Nor should my pressure weigh heavily on you.

8 "You have in fact spoken (F1)while I listened,
And I heard the sound of your words:

9 'I am (C1)pure, (C2)without wrongdoing;
I am innocent and there (C3)is no guilt in me.

10 'Behold, He (F1)invents (F2)criticisms against me;
He (C1)counts me as His enemy.

11 'He (C1)puts my feet in the stocks;
He watches all my paths.'

12 "Behold, let me respond to you, (C1)you are not right in this,
For God is greater than mankind.

13 "Why do you (C1)complain to Him
That He does not give an account of all His doings?

14 "Indeed (C1)God speaks once,
Or twice, yet no one notices it.

15 "In a (C1)dream, a vision of the night,
When deep sleep falls on people,
While they slumber in their beds,

16 Then (C1)He opens the ears of people,
And horrifies them with warnings,

17 So that He may turn a person away from bad conduct,
And (F1)keep a man from pride;

18 He (C1)keeps his soul back from the pit,
And his life from perishing by the (C2)spear.

19 "A person is also rebuked by (C1)pain in his bed,
And with constant complaint in his bones,

20 So that his life (C1)loathes bread,
And his soul, food (F1)that he should crave.

21 "His (C1)flesh wastes away from sight,
And his (C2)bones, which were not seen, stick out.

22 "Then (C1)his soul comes near to the pit,
And his life to those who bring death.

23 "If there is an (C1)interceding angel for him,
One out of a thousand,
To remind a person of what is (F1)right for him,

24 And he is gracious to him, and says,
'Free him from (C1)going down to the pit,
I have found a (C2)ransom';

25 Let his flesh become fresher than in youth,
Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor;

26 Then he will (C1)pray to God, and He will accept him,
So that (C2)he may see His face with joy,
And He will restore His righteousness to that person.

27 "He will sing to people and say,
'I (C1)have sinned and perverted what is right,
And it is not (C2)proper for me.

28 'He has redeemed my soul from going to the pit,
And my life will (C1)see the light.'

29 "Behold, God does (C1)all these things for a man two or three times,

30 To (C1)bring back his soul from the pit,
So that he may be enlightened with the light of life.

31 "Pay attention, Job, listen to me;
Keep silent, and let me speak.

32 "Then if (F1)you have anything to say, answer me;
Speak, for I would take pleasure in justifying you.

33 "If not, (C1)listen to me;
Keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom."

Matthew 14:1-21

Chapter 14

John the Baptist Beheaded

1 (F1)(C1)At that time (F2)(C2)Herod (F3)the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,2 and said to his servants, "(C1)This is John the Baptist; he himself has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."

3 For when (C1)Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him (C2)in prison because of (C3)Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.4 For John had been saying to him, "(C1)It is not lawful for you to have her."5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded (F1)John as (C1)a prophet.

6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of (C1)Herodias danced (F1)before them and pleased (C2)Herod,7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.8 And after being prompted by her mother, she (*)said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."9 And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and (F1)his dinner guests.10 He sent word and had John beheaded in the prison.11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.12 (F1)John's disciples came and took away the body and buried (F2)it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

Five Thousand Men Fed

13 (C1)Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the (F1)people heard about this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.14 When He came (F1)ashore, He (C1)saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and (C2)healed their sick.

15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is secluded and the hour is already past to eat; send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves."16 But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!"17 They (*)said to Him, "We have nothing here except (C1)five loaves and two fish."18 And He said, "Bring them here to Me."19 And ordering the crowds to (F1)sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked up toward heaven. He (C1)blessed the food and breaking the loaves, He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.20 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces: twelve full (C1)baskets.21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.<
