Genesis 25

Chapter 25

Abraham's Death

1 Now Abraham took another wife, (F1)whose name was Keturah.2 (C1)She bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All of these were the sons of Keturah.5 (C1)Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;6 but to the sons of (F1)his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and (C1)sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.

7 These are (F1)all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, (C1)175 years.8 Abraham breathed his last and died (C1)at a good old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was (C2)gathered to his people.9 Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in (C1)the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre,10 (C1)the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.11 It came about after the death of Abraham, that (C1)God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac (F1)lived by (C2)Beer-lahai-roi.

Descendants of Ishmael

12 Now these are the records of the generations of (C1)Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave woman, bore to Abraham;13 and these are the names of (C1)the sons of Ishmael, by their names, (F1)in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; (C1)twelve princes according to their (F1)tribes.17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael, (C1)137 years; and he breathed his last and died, and was (C2)gathered to his people.18 They (F1)settled from (C1)Havilah to (C2)Shur which is (F2)east of Egypt (F3)going toward Assyria; (C3)he (F4)settled in defiance of all his relatives.

Isaac's Sons

19 Now these are the records of (C1)the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham fathered Isaac;20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took (C1)Rebekah, the (C2)daughter of Bethuel the (F1)Aramean of Paddan-aram, the (C3)sister of Laban the (F1)Aramean, to be his wife.21 Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was unable to have children; and (C1)the LORD (F1)answered him, and his wife Rebekah (C2)conceived.22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why am I in this condition?" So she went to (C1)inquire of the LORD.23 And the LORD said to her,

"(C1)Two nations are in your womb;
(C2)And two peoples will be separated from your body;
And one people will be stronger than the other;
And (C3)the older will serve the younger."

24 When her days leading to the delivery were at an end, behold, there were twins in her womb.25 Now the first came out red, (C1)all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.26 Afterward his brother came out with (C1)his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so (C2)he was named (F1)Jacob; and Isaac was (C3)sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a (F1)civilized man, (C1)living in tents.28 Now Isaac loved Esau because (F1)he had (C1)a taste for game; (C2)but Rebekah loved Jacob.29 When Jacob had cooked a (C1)stew one day, Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted;30 and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a mouthful of (F1)that red stuff there, for I am exhausted." Therefore he was called (F2)Edom by name.31 But Jacob said, "(F1)First sell me your (C1)birthright."32 Esau said, "Look, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?"33 And Jacob said, "(F1)First swear to me"; so he swore an oath to him, and (C1)sold his birthright to Jacob.34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

Psalms 18

Chapter 18

The LORD Praised for Rescuing David.

For the music director. A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, (FA)who spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day that the LORD rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said,

1 "I love You, LORD, (C1)my strength."

2 The LORD is (C1)my rock and (C2)my fortress and my (C3)savior,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (C4)shield and the (C5)horn of my salvation, my (C6)stronghold.

3 I call upon the LORD, who is (C1)worthy to be praised,
And I am (C2)saved from my enemies.

4 The (C1)ropes of death encompassed me,
And the (C2)torrents of (F1)destruction (F2)terrified me.

5 The (C1)ropes of (F1)Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.

6 In my (C1)distress I called upon the LORD,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (C2)from His temple,
And my (C3)cry for help before Him came into His ears.

7 Then the (C1)earth shook and quaked;
And the (C2)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.

8 Smoke went up (F1)out of His nostrils,
And (C1)fire from His mouth was devouring;
Coals burned from it.

9 He also (C1)bowed the heavens down low, and came down
With thick (C2)darkness under His feet.

10 He rode on a (C1)cherub and flew;
And He sped on the (C2)wings of the wind.

11 He made (C1)darkness His hiding place, (C2)His (F1)canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds.

12 From the (C1)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (C2)coals of fire.

13 The LORD also (C1)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High uttered His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.

14 He (C1)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and (F1)routed them.

15 Then the (C1)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were exposed
By Your (C2)rebuke, LORD,
At the blast of the (C3)breath of Your nostrils.

16 He (C1)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (C2)many waters.

17 He (C1)saved me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (C2)too mighty for me.

18 They confronted me in (C1)the day of my disaster,
But (C2)the LORD was my support.

19 He also brought me out into an (C1)open place;
He rescued me, because (C2)He delighted in me.

20 The LORD has (C1)rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the (C2)cleanness of my hands He has repaid me.

21 For I have (C1)kept the ways of the LORD,
And have (C2)not acted wickedly against my God.

22 For all (C1)His judgments were before me,
And I did not put away His (C2)statutes from me.

23 I was also (F1)(C1)blameless with Him,
And I (C2)kept myself from my wrongdoing.

24 Therefore the LORD has (C1)repaid me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.

25 With (C1)the faithful You show Yourself faithful;
With the (F1)blameless (C2)You prove Yourself blameless;

26 With the pure You show Yourself (C1)pure,
And with the crooked (C2)You show Yourself (F1)astute.

27 For You (C1)save an afflicted people,
But You humiliate (C2)haughty eyes.

28 For You (C1)light my lamp;
The LORD my God (C2)illumines my darkness.

29 For by You I can (C1)run at a (F1)troop of warriors;
And by my God I can (C2)leap over a wall.

30 As for God, His way is (F1)(C1)blameless;
The (C2)word of the LORD is refined;
He is a (C3)shield to all who take refuge in Him.

31 For (C1)who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a (C2)rock, except our God,

32 The God who (C1)encircles me with strength,
And (F1)makes my way (F2)(C2)blameless?

33 He (C1)makes my feet like deer's feet,
And (C2)sets me up on my high places.

34 He (C1)trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can (C2)bend a bow of bronze.

35 You have also given me (C1)the shield of Your salvation,
And Your (C2)right hand upholds me;
And (C3)Your (F1)gentleness makes me great.

36 You (C1)enlarge my steps under me,
And my (F1)(C2)feet have not slipped.

37 I (C1)pursued my enemies and overtook them,
And I did not turn back (C2)until they were consumed.

38 I shattered them, so that they were (C1)not able to rise;
They fell (C2)under my feet.

39 For You have (C1)encircled me with strength for battle;
You have forced those who rose up against me (C2)to bow down under me.

40 You have also made my enemies (C1)turn their backs to me,
And I (F1)(C2)destroyed those who hated me.

41 They cried for help, but there was (C1)no one to save,
They cried to the LORD, but (C2)He did not answer them.

42 Then I beat them fine like the (C1)dust before the wind;
I emptied them out like the mud of the streets.

43 You have rescued me from the (C1)contentions of the people;
You have placed me as (C2)head of the nations;
A (C3)people whom I have not known serve me.

44 As soon as they hear, they obey me;
Foreigners (C1)pretend to obey me.

45 Foreigners (C1)lose heart,
And (C2)come trembling out of their (F1)fortresses.

46 The LORD (C1)lives, and blessed be (C2)my rock;
And exalted be (C3)the God of my salvation,

47 The God who (C1)executes vengeance for me,
And (C2)subdues peoples under me.

48 He (C1)rescues me from my enemies;
You indeed (C2)lift me above those who rise up against me;
You rescue me from a (C3)violent man.

49 Therefore I will (C1)give thanks to You among the nations, LORD,
And I will (C2)sing praises to Your name.

50 He gives great (F1)(C1)salvation to His king,
And shows faithfulness to (C2)His anointed,
To David and (C3)his (F2)descendants forever.

Luke 14:1-24

Chapter 14

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

1 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the (F1)leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (C1)they were watching Him (F2)closely.2 And (F1)there in front of Him was a man suffering from (F2)edema.3 And Jesus responded and said to the (F1)(C1)lawyers and (F2)Pharisees, "(C2)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?"4 But they kept silent. And He took hold of him and healed him, and sent him away.5 And He said to them, "(F1)(C1)Which one of you will have a son or an ox fall into a well, and will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?"6 (C1)And they could offer no reply to this.

Parable of the Guests

7 Now He began telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (C1)they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,8 "Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (C1)do not (F1)take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,9 and the one who invited you (F1)both will come and say to you, 'Give your place to this person,' and then (C1)in disgrace you will proceed to occupy the last place.10 "But whenever you are invited, go and (F1)take the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, (C1)move up higher'; then you will have honor in the sight of all who are (F2)dining at the table with you.11 "(C1)For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

12 Now He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, "Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your (F1)repayment.13 "But whenever you give a (F1)banquet, invite people who are poor, who have disabilities, who are limping, and people who are blind;14 and you will be blessed, since they (F1)do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at (C1)the resurrection of the righteous."

15 Now when one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, "(C1)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!"

Parable of the Dinner

16 But He said to him, "(C1)A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many;17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, because everything is ready now.'18 "And yet they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I purchased a field and I need to go out to look at it; (F1)please consider me excused.'19 "And another one said, 'I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; (F1)please consider me excused.'20 "And another one said, '(C1)I took a woman as my wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'21 "And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here those who are poor, those with disabilities, those who are blind, and those who are limping.'22 "And later the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'23 "And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the roads and the hedges and press upon them to come in, so that my house will be filled.24 'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my dinner.'"<
