Genesis 19

Chapter 19

The Doom of Sodom

1 Now the (C1)two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When (C2)Lot saw them, he stood up to meet them and (F1)bowed down with his face to the ground.2 And he said, "Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant's house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way." They said, "No, but we shall spend the night in the public square."3 Yet he strongly urged them, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; (C1)and he prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.4 Before they lay down, (C1)the men of the city—the men of Sodom—surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people (F1)from every quarter;5 and they called to Lot and said to him, "(C1)Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may (F1)have relations with them."6 But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him,7 and said, "Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.8 "Now look, (C1)I have two daughters who have not (F1)had relations with any man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them (F2)whatever you like; only do not do anything to these men, because they have come under the (F3)shelter of my roof."9 But they said, "Get out of the way!" They also said, "This one came in (F1)as a foreigner, and already (C1)he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them!" So they pressed hard against (F2)Lot and moved forward to break the door.10 But (C1)the men reached out their (F1)hands and brought Lot into the house (F2)with them, and shut the door.11 Then (C1)they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, from the small to the great, so that they became weary of trying to find the doorway.

12 Then the two men said to Lot, "Whom else do you have here? A son-in-law and your sons and daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place;13 for we are about to destroy this place, because (C1)their outcry has become so great before the LORD that (C2)the LORD has sent us to destroy it."14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who (F1)were to marry his daughters, and said, "Up, (C1)get out of this place, for the LORD is destroying the city." (C2)But he appeared to his sons-in-law (F2)to be joking.

15 When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the (F1)punishment of the city."16 But he hesitated. So the men (C1)grasped his hand and the hand of his wife and the (F1)hands of his two daughters, because (C2)the compassion of the LORD was upon him; and they brought him out and put him outside the city.17 When they had brought them outside, (F1)one said, "(C1)Escape for your life! (C2)Do not look behind you, and do not stay (F2)anywhere in the (C3)surrounding area; escape to (C4)the (F3)mountains, or you will be swept away."18 But Lot said to them, "Oh no, my lords!19 "Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your compassion, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the (F1)mountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die;20 now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) (F1)so that my life may be saved."21 And he said to him, "Behold, I grant you this (F1)request also, not to overthrow the town of which you have spoken.22 "Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there." Therefore the town was named (F1)(C1)Zoar.

23 The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.24 Then the LORD (C1)rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah from the LORD out of heaven,25 and (C1)He overthrew those cities, and all the surrounding area, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.26 But (F1)Lot's wife, from behind him, (C1)looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 Now Abraham got up early in the morning and went to (C1)the place where he had stood before the LORD;28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the surrounding area; and (F1)behold, he saw (C1)the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a (F2)furnace.

29 So it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the surrounding area, that (C1)God remembered Abraham, and (C2)sent Lot out of the midst of the destruction, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.

Lot and His Daughters

30 Now Lot went up from Zoar with his two daughters and (C1)stayed in the (F1)mountains, because he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man (F1)on earth to (F2)(C1)have relations with us according to the custom of all the earth.32 "Come, (C1)let's make our father drink wine, and let's sleep with him so that we may keep (F1)our family alive through our father."33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and slept with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.34 On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, "Look, I slept last night with my father; let's make him drink wine tonight too, then you go in and sleep with him, so that we may keep (F1)our family alive through our father."35 So they had their father drink wine that night too, and the younger got up and slept with him; and he did not know when she lay down or got up.36 And so both of the daughters of Lot conceived by their father.37 The firstborn gave birth to a son, and named him (C1)Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.38 As for the younger, she also gave birth to a son, and named him Ben-ammi; he is the father of (F1)the sons of (C1)Ammon to this day.

Psalms 12

Chapter 12

God, a Helper against the Treacherous.

For the music director; (FA)upon an eight-stringed lyre. A Psalm of David.

1 Help, LORD, for (C1)the godly person has come to an end,
For the faithful have disappeared from the sons of mankind.

2 They (C1)speak (F1)lies to one another;
They speak with (F2)(C2)flattering lips and a double heart.

3 May the LORD cut off all (F1)flattering lips,
The tongue that (C1)speaks great things;

4 Who (C1)have said, "With our tongue we will prevail;
Our lips are (F1)our own; who is lord over us?"

5 "Because of the (C1)devastation of the poor, because of the groaning of the needy,
Now (C2)I will arise," says the LORD; "I will (C3)put him in the safety for which he longs."

6 The (C1)words of the LORD are pure words;
Like silver (C2)refined in a furnace on the ground, filtered seven times.

7 You, LORD, will keep them;
You will (C1)protect him from this generation forever.

8 The (C1)wicked strut about on every side
When (F1)(C2)vileness is exalted among the sons of mankind.

Luke 11:1-28

Chapter 11

Instruction about Prayer

1 It happened that while (F1)Jesus was praying in a certain place, when He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples."2 And He said to them, "(C1)When you pray, say:

'(F1)Father, (F2)hallowed be Your name.
(F3)Your kingdom come.

3 'Give us (C1)each day our (F1)daily bread.

4 'And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves also forgive everyone who (C1)is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation.'"

5 And He said to them, "(F1)Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves,6 because a friend of mine has come to me from a journey and I have nothing to serve him';7 and from inside he answers and says, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children (F1)and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.'8 "I tell you, even if he will not get up and give him anything just because he is his friend, yet (C1)because of his (F1)shamelessness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

9 "So I say to you, (F1)(C1)ask, and it will be given to you; (F2)seek, and you will find; (F3)knock, and it will be opened to you.10 "For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it will be opened.11 "Now (F1)which one of you fathers will his son ask for a (F2)fish, and instead of a fish, he will give him a snake?12 "Or he will even ask for an egg, and his father will give him a scorpion?13 "So (C1)if you, despite being (F1)evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will (F2)your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

Pharisees' Blasphemy

14 (C1)And He was casting out a mute demon; when the demon had gone out, the man who was previously unable to speak talked, and the crowds were amazed.15 But some of them said, "He casts out the demons (C1)by (C2)Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons."16 Others, (F1)to test Him, (C1)were demanding of Him a (F2)sign from heaven.17 (C1)But He knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against (F1)itself falls.18 "And if (C1)Satan also has been divided against himself, how will his kingdom (F1)stand? For you claim that I cast out the demons by (C2)Beelzebul.19 "Yet if by (C1)Beelzebul I cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges.20 "But if I cast out the demons by (F1)the (C1)finger of God, then (C2)the kingdom of God has come upon you.21 "When (F1)a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are (F2)secure.22 "But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, that man takes away his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder.23 "(C1)The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters.

24 "(C1)When the unclean spirit comes out of (F1)a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it then says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.'25 "And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.26 "Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they come in and live there; and the last condition of that person becomes worse than the first."

27 While (F1)Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "(C1)Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts at which You nursed!"28 But He said, "On the contrary, blessed are (C1)those who hear the word of God and follow it."<
