Genesis 16
Chapter 16
Sarai and Hagar
1 Now (C1)Sarai, Abram's wife, had not borne him a child, but she had (C2)an Egyptian slave woman whose name was Hagar.2 So Sarai said to Abram, "See now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. (C1)Please have relations with my slave woman; perhaps I will (F1)obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.3 And so after Abram had lived (C1)ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her slave woman, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.4 Then he had relations with Hagar, and she conceived; and when Hagar became aware that she had conceived, her mistress was insignificant in her sight.5 So Sarai said to Abram, "(C1)May the wrong done to me be upon you! I put my slave woman into your (F1)arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was insignificant in her (F2)sight. (C2)May the LORD judge between (F3)you and me."6 But Abram said to Sarai, "Look, your slave woman is in your (F1)power; do to her what is good in your (F2)sight." So Sarai treated her harshly, and (C1)she fled from her presence.
7 Now (C1)the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to (C2)Shur.8 He said, "Hagar, Sarai's slave woman, (C1)from where have you come, and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai."9 So the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit (F1)to her authority."10 The (C1)angel of the LORD also said to her, "(C2)I will greatly multiply your (F1)descendants so that (F2)they will be too many to count."11 The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are pregnant,
And you will give birth to a son;
And you shall name him (F1)Ishmael,
Because (C1)the LORD has heard your affliction.
12 "But he will be a (C1)wild donkey of a man;
His hand will be against everyone,
And everyone's hand will be against him;
And he will live (F1)(C2)in defiance of all his brothers."
15 So Hagar bore a son to Abram; and Abram named his son, to whom Hagar gave birth, Ishmael.16 Abram was (C1)eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to (F1)him.
Psalms 9
Chapter 9
Thanksgiving for God's Justice.
1 I will give thanks to the LORD with all (C1)my heart;
I will (C2)tell of all Your (F1)wonders.
2 I will rejoice and be (C1)jubilant in You;
I will (C2)sing praise to Your name, O (C3)Most High.
3 When my enemies turn back,
They stumble and (C1)perish before You.
4 For You have (C1)maintained (F1)my just cause;
You have sat on the throne (F2)(C2)judging righteously.
5 You have (C1)rebuked the nations, You have eliminated the wicked;
You have (C2)wiped out their name forever and ever.
6 (F1)The enemy has come to an end in everlasting ruins,
And You have uprooted the cities;
The very (C1)memory of them has perished.
7 But the (C1)LORD (F1)sits as King forever;
He has established His (C2)throne for judgment,
8 And He will (C1)judge the world in righteousness;
He will execute judgment for the peoples fairly.
9 (F1)The LORD will also be a (C1)stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble;
10 And (F1)those who (C1)know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, LORD, have not (C2)abandoned those who seek You.
11 Sing praises to the LORD, who (C1)dwells in Zion;
(C2)Declare His deeds among the peoples.
12 For (C1)He who (F1)requires blood remembers them;
He does not forget (C2)the cry of the needy.
13 Be gracious to me, LORD;
See my oppression from those (C1)who hate me,
You who (C2)lift me up from the gates of death,
14 So that I may tell of (C1)all Your praises,
That in the gates of the daughter of Zion
I may (C2)rejoice in Your (F1)salvation.
15 The nations have sunk down (C1)into the pit which they have made;
In the (C2)net which they hid, their own foot has been caught.
16 The LORD has (C1)made Himself known;
He has (C2)executed judgment.
A wicked one is ensnared in the work of his own hands. (F1)Higgaion Selah
17 The wicked will (F1)(C1)return to (F2)Sheol,
All the nations who (C2)forget God.
18 For the (C1)needy will not always be forgotten,
Nor the (C2)hope of the afflicted perish forever.
19 (C1)Arise, LORD, do not let mankind prevail;
Let the nations be (C2)judged before You.
20 Put them (C1)in fear, LORD;
Let the nations know that they are (C2)merely human. Selah
Luke 9:28-62
Chapter 9
28 (C1)About eight days after these sayings, He took along (C2)Peter, John, and James, and (C3)went up on the mountain (C4)to pray.29 And while He was (C1)praying, the appearance of His face (C2)became different, and His clothing became white and (F1)gleaming.30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah,31 who, appearing in (F1)glory, were speaking of His (C1)departure, which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.32 Now Peter and his companions (C1)had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him.33 And as (F1)these two men were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, "(C1)Master, it is good that we are here; and (C2)let's make three (F2)tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"—(C3)not realizing what he was saying.34 But while he was saying this, a cloud (F1)formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.35 And then (C1)a voice came from the cloud, saying, "(C2)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!"36 And when the voice (F1)had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (C1)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.37 (C1)On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he is my only son,39 and a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves.40 "And I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not."41 And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."42 Now while he was still approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the (F1)(C1)greatness of God.
The Test of Greatness
46 (C1)Now an argument (F1)started among them as to which of them might be the greatest.47 But Jesus, (C1)knowing (F1)what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side,48 and He said to them, "(C1)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (C2)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great."
49 (C1)John answered and said, "(C2)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow along with us."50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not hinder him; (C1)for the one who is not against you is (F1)for you."
51 When the days were approaching for (C1)His (F1)ascension, He (F2)was determined (C2)to go to Jerusalem;52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (C1)Samaritans to (F1)make arrangements for Him.53 And they did not receive Him, (C1)because (F1)He was traveling toward Jerusalem.54 When His disciples (C1)James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to (C2)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"55 But He turned and rebuked them. them."">(F1)56 And they went on to another village.
Exacting Discipleship
57 (C1)As they were going on the road, (C2)someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go."58 And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but (C1)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."59 And He said to another, "(C1)Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."60 But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (C1)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."61 Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but (C1)first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home."62 But Jesus said to him, "(C1)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."
