Genesis 12

Chapter 12

Abram Journeys to Egypt

1 Now (C1)the LORD said to Abram,

"Go from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father's house,
To the land which I will show you;

2 And (C1)I will make you into a great nation,
And (C2)I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And you shall (C3)be a blessing;

3 And (C1)I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who (F1)curses you I will (F2)curse.
(C2)And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

4 So Abram went away as the LORD had spoken to him; and (C1)Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.5 Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot, and all their (C1)possessions which they had accumulated, and (C2)the (F1)people which they had acquired in Haran, and they (F2)set out for the land of Canaan; (C3)so they came to the land of Canaan.6 Abram passed through the land as far as the site of (C1)Shechem, to the (F1)oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time.7 And the LORD (C1)appeared to Abram and said, "(C2)To your (F1)descendants I will give this land." So he built (C3)an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him.8 Then he proceeded from there to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent with (C1)Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to the LORD and (C2)called upon the name of the LORD.9 Then Abram journeyed on, continuing toward (C1)the (F1)Negev.

10 Now there was (C1)a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a time, because the famine was (C2)severe in the land.11 It came about, when he (F1)was approaching Egypt, that he said to his wife Sarai, "See now, I know that you are a (F2)(C1)beautiful woman;12 (C1)and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife'; and they will kill me, but they will let you live.13 "Please say that you are (C1)my sister so that it may go well for me because of you, and that (F1)(C2)I may live on account of you."14 Now it came about, when Abram entered Egypt, that the Egyptians (F1)saw that the woman was very beautiful.15 Pharaoh's officials saw her and praised her to Pharaoh; and (C1)the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.16 Therefore (C1)he treated Abram well for her sake; and (F1)(C2)he gave him sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the LORD (C1)struck Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.18 Then Pharaoh called Abram and said, "(C1)What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?19 "Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her for myself as a wife? Now then, (F1)here is your wife, take her and go!"20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they (F1)escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him.

Psalms 6

Chapter 6

Prayer for Mercy in Time of Trouble.

For the music director; with stringed instruments, (FA)upon an eight-string lyre. A Psalm of David.

1 LORD, (C1)do not rebuke me in Your anger,
Nor discipline me in Your wrath.

2 Be gracious to me, LORD, for I am (C1)frail;
(C2)Heal me, LORD, for (C3)my bones are horrified.

3 And my (C1)soul is greatly horrified;
But You, LORD—(C2)how long?

4 Return, LORD, (C1)rescue my (F1)soul;
Save me because of Your mercy.

5 For (C1)there is no (F1)mention of You in death;
In (F2)Sheol, who will praise You?

6 I am (C1)weary with my sighing;
Every night I make my bed swim,
I flood my couch with (C2)my tears.

7 My (C1)eye has wasted away with grief;
It has grown old because of all my enemies.

8 (C1)Leave me, all you who practice injustice,
For the LORD (C2)has heard the sound of my weeping.

9 The LORD (C1)has heard my pleading,
The LORD (C2)receives my prayer.

10 All my enemies will (C1)be put to shame and greatly horrified;
They shall (F1)turn back, they will (C2)suddenly be put to shame.

Luke 8:1-25

Chapter 8

Women Support Jesus

1 Soon afterward, (F1)Jesus began going around from one city and village to another, (C1)proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him,2 and also (C1)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: (C2)Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, (C1)Herod's (C2)steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.

Parable of the Sower

4 (C1)Now when a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable:5 "The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the sky ate it up.6 "Other seed fell on rocky soil, and when it came up, it withered away because it had no moisture.7 "Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.8 "And yet other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as much." As He said these things, He would call out, "(C1)The one who has ears to hear, (F1)let him hear."

9 (C1)Now His disciples began asking Him what this parable (F1)meant.10 And He said, "(C1)To you it has been granted to know the (F1)mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are told in parables, so that (F2)(C2)while seeing they may not see, and (F3)while hearing they may not understand.

11 "Now this is the parable: (C1)the seed is the word of God.12 "And those beside the road are the ones who have heard, then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.13 "Those on the rocky soil are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and yet these do not have a firm root; (F1)they believe for a while, and in a time of temptation they (F2)fall away.14 "And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked by worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and they bring no fruit to maturity.15 "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word (F1)with a good and virtuous heart, and hold it firmly, and produce fruit with (F2)perseverance.

Parable of the Lamp

16 "Now (C1)no one lights a lamp and covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in may see the light.17 "(C1)For nothing is concealed that will not become evident, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.18 "So take care how you listen; (C1)for whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he (F1)thinks he has will be taken away from him."

19 (C1)Now His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd.20 And it was reported to Him, "Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You."21 But He answered and said to them, "My mother and My brothers are these (C1)who hear the word of God and do it."

Jesus Stills the Sea

22 (C1)Now on one of those days (F1)Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side of (C2)the lake." So they launched out.23 But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on (C1)the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger.24 They came up to Jesus and woke Him, saying, "(C1)Master, Master, we are perishing!" And He got up and (C2)rebuked the wind and the surging (F1)waves, and they stopped, and (F2)it became calm.25 And He said to them, "Where is your faith?" But they were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?"<
