Genesis 11

Chapter 11

The Tower of Babel

1 Now all the earth (F1)used the same language and (F2)the same words.2 And it came about, as they journeyed (F1)east, that they found a plain in the land (C1)of Shinar and (F2)settled there.3 Then they said to one another, "Come, let's make bricks and (F1)fire them thoroughly." And they used brick for stone, and they used (C1)tar for mortar.4 And they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top (C1)will reach into heaven, and let's make (C2)a name for ourselves; otherwise we (C3)will be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth."5 Now (C1)the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the (F1)men had built.6 And the LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have (F1)(C1)the same language. And this is what they have started to do, and now nothing which they plan to do will be (F2)impossible for them.7 "Come, (F1)(C1)let Us go down and there (C2)confuse their (F2)language, so that they will not understand one another's (F2)speech."8 So the LORD (C1)scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth; and they stopped building the city.9 Therefore it was named (F1)(C1)Babel, because there the LORD confused the (F2)language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

Descendants of Shem

10 (C1)These are the records of the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood;11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he fathered Arpachshad, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

12 Arpachshad lived thirty-five years, and fathered Shelah;13 and Arpachshad lived 403 years after he fathered Shelah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

14 Shelah lived thirty years, and fathered Eber;15 and Shelah lived 403 years after he fathered Eber, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and fathered Peleg;17 and Eber lived 430 years after he fathered Peleg, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

18 Peleg lived thirty years, and fathered Reu;19 and Peleg lived 209 years after he fathered Reu, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and fathered Serug;21 and Reu lived 207 years after he fathered Serug, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and fathered Nahor;23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he fathered Nahor, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and fathered (C1)Terah;25 and Nahor lived 119 years after he fathered Terah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

26 Terah lived seventy years, and (C1)fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 Now these are the records of the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and (C1)Haran fathered (C2)Lot.28 Haran died (F1)during the lifetime of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in (C1)Ur of the Chaldeans.29 Abram and (C1)Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was (C2)Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was (C3)Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah (F1)and Iscah.30 (C1)Sarai was unable to conceive; she did not have a child.

31 Now Terah took his son Abram, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they departed (F1)together from (C1)Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Haran and (F2)settled there.32 The days of Terah were 205 years; and Terah died in Haran.

Psalms 5

Chapter 5

Prayer for Protection from the Wicked.

For the music director; for (FA)flute accompaniment. A Psalm of David.

1 (C1)Listen to my words, LORD,
Consider my (C2)sighing.

2 Listen to (C1)the sound of my cry for help, (C2)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.

3 In the morning, LORD, (F1)You will hear my voice;
In the (C1)morning I will present my (F2)prayer to You and be on the (C2)watch.

4 For You are not a God (C1)who takes pleasure in wickedness;
(C2)No evil can dwell with You.

5 The (C1)boastful will not (C2)stand before Your eyes;
You (C3)hate all who do injustice.

6 You (C1)destroy those who speak lies;
The LORD loathes (C2)the person of bloodshed and deceit.

7 But as for me, (C1)by Your abundant graciousness I will enter Your house,
(F1)At Your holy temple I will (C2)bow in (C3)reverence for You.

8 LORD, (C1)lead me (C2)in Your righteousness (C3)because of my enemies;
Make Your way (F1)straight before me.

9 For there is (C1)nothing (F1)trustworthy in (F2)their mouth;
Their (C2)inward part is destruction itself.
Their (C3)throat is an open grave;
They (F3)flatter with their tongue.

10 Make them pay, God;
(C1)Have them fall by their own schemes!
(C2)Scatter them in the multitude of their wrongdoings,
For they are (C3)rebellious against You.

11 But (C1)rejoice, all who (C2)take refuge in You,
Sing for joy forever!
And (F1)may You (C3)shelter them,
That those who (C4)love Your name may rejoice in You.

12 For You (C1)bless the righteous person, LORD,
You (C2)surround him with favor as with a shield.

Luke 7:18-50

Chapter 7

18 (C1)The disciples of John also reported to him about all these things.19 And after summoning (F1)two of his disciples, John sent them to (C1)the Lord, saying, "Are You the Coming One, or are we to (F2)look for another?"20 When the men came to Him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to You, (F1)to ask, 'Are You the Coming One, or are we to (F2)look for another?'"21 At that very (F1)time He (C1)cured many people of diseases and (C2)afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind.22 And He answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: people who were (C1)blind receive sight, people who limped walk, people with leprosy are cleansed and people who were deaf hear, dead people are raised up, and (C2)people who are poor have the gospel preached to them.23 "And blessed is (F1)anyone who does not take offense at Me."

24 When the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the (F1)wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?25 "(F1)But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces!26 "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.27 "This is the one about whom it is written:

'(C1)BEHOLD, I AM SENDING MY MESSENGER (F1)AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'

28 "I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is (F1)least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."29 When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged (C1)God's justice, (C2)having been baptized with (C3)the baptism of John.30 But the Pharisees and the (F1)(C1)lawyers rejected God's purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by (F2)John.

31 "To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?32 "They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a song of mourning, and you did not weep.'33 "For John the Baptist has come neither (C1)eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!'34 "The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a (F1)heavy drinker, a friend of tax collectors and (F2)sinners!'35 "And yet wisdom (C1)is vindicated by all her children."

The Anointing in Galilee

36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table.37 (C1)And there was a woman in the city who was a (F1)sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, and began kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, "If this Man were (C1)a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a (F1)sinner!"

Parable of Two Debtors

40 And Jesus responded and said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he (F1)replied, "Say it, Teacher."41 "A moneylender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred (F1)(C1)denarii, and the other, fifty.42 "When they (C1)were unable to repay, he canceled the debts of both. So which of them will love him more?"43 Simon answered and said, "I assume the one for whom he canceled the greater debt." And He said to him, "You have judged correctly."44 And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you (C1)gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.45 "You (F1)(C1)gave Me no kiss; but she has not stopped kissing My feet since the time I came in.46 "(C1)You did not (F1)anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume.47 "For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but the one who is forgiven little, loves little."48 And He said to her, "(C1)Your sins have been forgiven."49 And then those who were reclining at the table with Him began saying (F1)to themselves, "(C1)Who is this Man who even forgives sins?"50 And He said to the woman, "(C1)Your faith has saved you; (C2)go in peace."
