Chapter 3
The Fall of Mankind
1 Now (C1)the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God really said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"2 The woman said to the serpent, "(C1)From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'"4 (C1)The serpent said to the woman, "You certainly will not die!5 "For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and (C1)you will (F1)become like God, knowing good and evil."6 (C1)When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they (C1)knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.
8 Now they heard the sound of (C1)the LORD God walking in the garden in the (F1)cool of the day, (C2)and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.9 Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "(C1)Where are you?"10 He said, "(C1)I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself."11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?"12 (C1)The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate."13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" And the woman said, "(C1)The serpent deceived me, and I ate."14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent, "(C1)Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all the livestock,
And more than any animal of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And (C2)dust you shall eat
All the days of your life;
15 And I will (F1)(C1)make enemies
Of you and the woman,
And of your (F2)offspring and her (F3)Descendant;
(C2)He shall (F4)bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise Him on the heel."
"I will greatly multiply
Your pain (F1)in childbirth,
In pain you shall (C1)deliver children;
Yet your desire will be for your husband,
And (C2)he shall rule over you."
(C1)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(C2)With (F1)hard labor you shall eat from it
All the days of your life.
18 "Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
Yet you shall eat the (F1)plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your face
You shall eat bread,
Until you (C1)return to the ground,
Because (C2)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return."
20 Now the man named his wife (F1)(C1)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.21 And the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
22 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of (C1)Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from (C2)the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"—23 therefore the LORD God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.24 So (C1)He drove the man out; and at the (C2)east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the (C3)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to (C4)the tree of life.
Chapter 4
Cain and Abel
1 Now the man (F1)had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, "I have obtained a male child with the help of the LORD."2 And again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now (C1)Abel was (C2)a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a cultivator of the ground.3 So it came about (F1)in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the ground.4 (C1)Abel, on his part also brought an offering, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And (C2)the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering;5 but (C1)for Cain and his offering He had no regard. So (C2)Cain became very angry and his face (F1)was gloomy.6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "(C1)Why are you angry? And why is your face (F1)gloomy?7 "(C1)If you do well, (F1)will your face not be (F2)cheerful? (C2)And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; and its desire is for you, (C3)but you must master it."8 Cain (F1)talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and (C1)killed him.
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "(C1)Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"10 Then He said, "What have you done? (C1)The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to Me from the ground.11 "Now (C1)you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.12 "(C1)When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; (C2)you will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth."13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to endure!14 "Behold, You have (C1)driven me this day from the face of the ground; and I will be hidden from Your face, and (C2)I will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth, and (C3)whoever finds me will kill me."15 So the LORD said to him, "Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him (C1)seven times as much." And the LORD (F1)(C2)placed a mark on Cain, so that no one finding him would kill him.
16 Then Cain left the presence (C1)of the LORD, and (F1)settled in the land of (F2)Nod, east of Eden.
17 Cain (F1)had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and Cain built a city, and named the city Enoch, after the name of his son.18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.19 Lamech took (C1)two wives for himself: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and have livestock.21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and flute.22 As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah,
Listen to my voice,
You wives of Lamech,
Pay attention to my words,
(C1)For I have killed a man for wounding me;
And a boy for striking me!
24 "If Cain is avenged (C1)seven times,
Then Lamech seventy-seven times!"
25 (C1)Adam (F1)had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him (F2)Seth, for, she said, "God (F3)has appointed me another (F4)child in place of Abel, (C2)because Cain killed him."26 To Seth also (C1)a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then people began (C2)to call (F1)upon the name of the LORD.
Chapter 5
Descendants of Adam
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day when God created man, He made him (C1)in the likeness of God.2 He created them (C1)male and female, and He (C2)blessed them and named them "mankind" on the day when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.4 Then the days of Adam after he fathered Seth were eight hundred years, and he fathered other sons and daughters.5 So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6 Now Seth lived 105 years, and fathered Enosh.7 Then Seth lived 807 years after he fathered Enosh, and he fathered other sons and daughters.8 So all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9 Now Enosh lived ninety years, and fathered Kenan.10 Then Enosh lived 815 years after he fathered Kenan, and he fathered other sons and daughters.11 So all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12 Now Kenan lived seventy years, and fathered Mahalalel.13 Then Kenan lived 840 years after he fathered Mahalalel, and he fathered other sons and daughters.14 So all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15 Now Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and fathered Jared.16 Then Mahalalel lived 830 years after he fathered Jared, and he fathered other sons and daughters.17 So all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18 Now Jared lived 162 years, and fathered Enoch.19 Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he fathered Enoch, and he fathered other sons and daughters.20 So all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21 Now Enoch lived sixty-five years, and fathered Methuselah.22 Then Enoch (C1)walked with God three hundred years after he fathered Methuselah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.23 So all the days of Enoch were 365 years.24 (C1)Enoch walked with God; and he was (F1)not, for God (C2)took him.
25 Now Methuselah lived 187 years, and fathered Lamech.26 Then Methuselah lived 782 years after he fathered Lamech, and he fathered other sons and daughters.27 So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.
28 Now Lamech lived 182 years, and fathered a son.29 And he named him Noah, saying, "This one will give us comfort from our work and from the hard labor of our hands caused by (C1)the ground which the LORD has cursed."30 Then Lamech lived 595 years after he fathered Noah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.31 So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
32 Now after Noah was (C1)five hundred years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Chapter 2
The Reign of the LORD'S Anointed.
1 Why are (C1)the (F1)nations restless
And the peoples (C2)plotting in vain?
2 The (C1)kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers conspire together
(C2)Against the LORD and against His (F1)(C3)Anointed, saying,
3 "Let's (C1)tear their shackles apart
And throw their ropes away from us!"
4 He who (F1)sits in the heavens (C1)laughs,
The Lord (C2)scoffs at them.
5 Then He will speak to them in His (C1)anger
And (C2)terrify them in His fury, saying,
6 "But as for Me, I have installed (C1)My King
Upon Zion, (C2)My holy mountain."
7 "I will announce the (F1)decree of the LORD:
He said to Me, 'You are (C1)My Son,
Today I have fathered You.
8 'Ask it of Me, and (C1)I will certainly give (C2)the (F1)nations as Your inheritance,
And the (C3)ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 'You shall (F1)(C1)break them with a (F2)rod of iron,
You shall (C2)shatter them like (F3)earthenware.'"
10 Now then, you kings, (C1)use insight;
Let yourselves be instructed, you (F1)judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with (F1)(C1)reverence
And rejoice with (C2)trembling.
12 (F1)Kiss (C1)the Son, that He not be angry and you perish on the way,
For (C2)His wrath may be kindled quickly.
How blessed are all who (C3)take refuge in Him!
Luke 6:1-26
Chapter 6
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
1 (C1)Now it happened that (F1)Jesus was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples (C2)were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them.2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what (C1)is not lawful on the Sabbath?"3 And Jesus, answering them, said, "Have you not even read (C1)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the (F1)consecrated bread, which (C1)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?"5 And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
6 (C1)On another Sabbath He entered (C2)the synagogue and taught; and a man was there (F1)whose right hand was withered.7 Now the scribes and the Pharisees (C1)were watching Him (F1)closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him.8 But He (C1)knew (F1)what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and (F2)come forward!" And he got up and (F3)came forward.9 And Jesus said to them, "I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?"10 And after (C1)looking around at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored.11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.
Choosing the Twelve
12 Now it was (F1)at this time that He went off to (C1)the mountain to (C2)pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God.13 And when day came, (C1)He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as (C2)apostles:14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and (F1)James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew;15 and (C1)Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot;16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
17 And then Jesus (C1)came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was (C2)a large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coastal region of (C3)Tyre and Sidon,18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being cured.19 And all the (F1)people were trying to (C1)touch Him, because (C2)power was coming from Him and healing them all.
The Beatitudes
20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, "(C1)Blessed are (F1)you who are poor, for (C2)yours is the kingdom of God.21 "Blessed are (F1)you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are (F1)you who weep now, for you will laugh.22 "(C1)Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they (F1)(C2)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man.23 "Rejoice on that day and jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to (F1)treat the prophets (C2)the same way.24 "But woe to (C1)you who are rich, for (C2)you are receiving your comfort in full.25 "Woe to you who (F1)are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.26 "Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to (F1)treat the (C1)false prophets the same way.<
