The best training is to play by ear: trial by fire.

I was fifteen years old, and I hardly knew how to play a simple Bach prelude on the piano when I began to compose music, and at the most advanced level. I had never studied such things as harmony.

Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.

Apart from that Mrs Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

I could never play the ingenue, the girl next door or the very successful young doctor. That would be a bore.

We did one pilot for FOX which was about this couple that moves to a town, and we play everyone in the entire town. So it was like a Peter Sellers film.

An actor has to be very, very careful, as one of the most wonderful props - and actors love props - is a cigarette. There's so much to do with it: you can bring it up to your face, play with the smoke. It's just the greatest - ever since I was 16 and in acting school in England, I've been playing around with cigarettes.
