For those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, we are grateful that such men and women were among us. For those who continue to serve, we honor their commitment. For those who return to civilian life, we honor their service.

Because all of us believe and understand in the fabric of the common bond of why we call ourselves American is to care for the men and women who wear the uniform; and when they take off the uniform, we care for them when they are veterans.

Since the Revolution, eight generations of America's veterans have established an unbroken commitment to freedom.

In fact, it is often times a detriment for the Government to preemptively legislate on an issue before we can either define it or grasp its impact.

I have been in Congress for more than a half century. I have lived through times of fear and times of hope. Of despair and of achievement. I have seen our government at its best, but today I fear that we see our government at its worst.

The people ask much, often more than any government can give. We must resist the temptation to promise solutions to all problems.

The cooperation of government at its different levels is important and can only be achieved as long as the people of Chicago are directly involved in our efforts and supportive of our goals.

But always I was a private citizen whose activities in government or political party were appointive.

If for no other reason than the energy crisis now facing this country, the federal government should be eager to become partners with us in rebuilding our city.

But as important as the job to be done by government in the neighborhoods, the people must also be involved.

If all of us would require the same level of performance from ourselves as we expect from government, this city will forever be the city that works.

I feel not unlike a small boy, waking from a bad dream to find reality not much of an improvement.

I'm ambitious but I'm not particularly competitive. I'll try to get roles, as I think it's healthy to go for things, but... I think there's too much competition between women already. It's important to have female solidarity and support each other and other actresses.

That was the principle of reparations to which President Truman agreed at Potsdam. And the United States will not agree to the taking from Germany of greater reparations than was provided by the Potsdam Agreement.

I have come to Germany to learn at first hand the problems involved in the reconstruction of Germany and to discuss with our representatives the views of the United States Government as to some of the problems confronting us.

Women hate everything which strips off the tinsel of sentiment, and they are right, or it would rob them of their weapons.

Good, bad mediocre or whatever it is, if a director wants me in his movie, I take it as a compliment.
