Semitic i. 35. 300 f} Dr^{Daniel 11:37} Che^{Ency. Bib.TAMMUZ} Say^{Hast. DB ID}.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

תַּמּוּז [Tammuz], pr.n. of a Syrian god, Adonis (אָדוֹן) of the Greeks, worshipped also by the Hebrew women with lamentations, in the fourth month of every year (called תַּמּוּז beginning at the new moon of July), Ezekiel 8:14. As to the Syrian festival, see Lucian, De Dea Syra, § 7, seqq.; also Selden, De Dis Syris, ii. 31, and Creuzer’s Symbolik des Alterthums, vol. ii. 91, seqq. ed. 2. (I lay down nothing as to the etymology. A root תמז is not found in the Phœnicio-Shemitic languages; it may be that תַּמּוּז is for תַּמְזוּז from the root מְזַז denoting fear, concr. fearful.)
