שַׁחַר m. dawn, morning (Arab. سُاحْرَةُ id.), Genesis 19:15; Joshua 6:15. Poet. there are ascribed to it eyebrows (see עַפְעַפַּיִם ); wings, Psalms 139:9. בֶּן־שַׁחַר “son of the morning;” used of Lucifer [i.e. the morning star] (see הֵילֵל ), Isaiah 14:12. Hosea 6:3, כְּשַׁחַר נָכוֹן מֹצָאוֹ “his going forth (is) established like the morning,” i.e. Jehovah’s advent, but Hosea 10:15, “like the morning (quickly) shall he be cut off.” Adv. mane, at or in the morning. Psalms 57:9, 108:3. Metaph. used of felicity again dawning after misery, Isaiah 8:20 (see אֲשֶׁר B, No. 8 ); Isai. 47:11 58:8. The same figurative use is made of the word בֹּקֶר Job 11:17 נֶשֶׁף Jeremiah 13:16 and Arab. صبح. Enwari Soheil: “in calamity there is hope, for the end of a dark night is the dawn.”
