1 old Israel sanctuaries: of ׳י at Shechem Joshua 24:26 (E); probably also Exodus 15:17 (i.e. Shiloh); plural of sanct. to be destroyed by ׳י Leviticus 26:31 (H); ׳מִקְדְּשֵׁי יִשׂ in Northern Israel Amos 7:9; מִקְדַּשׁמֶֿלֶךְ vAmos 7:13 (Bethel).

5׳י will become ׳לְמ for his people Ezekiel 11:16 (Br MP 268), so apparently Isaiah 8:14 (but gloss Du Che Hpt Marti; Lag Semitic i. 16 מִקָּשׁ i.e. stumbling-block [he compare Syriac strike]).

מִקְדָּשׁ m. (from the root קָדַשׁ), with Dag. euph. מִקְּדָשׁ Exodus 15:17, with suff. מִקְדָּשׁוֹ, once (unusually) מִקְדְּשׁוֹ Numbers 18:29.
(1) a holy thing, something consecrated, Num. loc. cit.
(2) a sanctuary, a holy place; specially used of the holy tabernacle of the Israelites, Exodus 25:8; Leviticus 12:4, 21:12 Numbers 10:21, 18:1 of the temple, 1 Chronicles 22:19; 2 Chronicles 29:21. Often more fully, מְקוֹם מִקְדַּשׁ יְיָ Isaiah 60:13 מְכוֹן מִקְדַּשׁ יְיָ Daniel 8:11. מִקְדַּשׁ מֶלֶךְ a sacred place which a king has, i.e. consecrated by him, Amos 7:13. Plur. מִקְדְּשֵׁי בֵּית יְיָ Jeremiah 51:51, the sanctuaries, the holy places of the temple; מִקְדְּשֵׁי אֵל Psalms 73:17 id.; but מִקְדְשֵׁי יִשְׂרָאֵל are the sanctuaries of Israel (Gentile and prohibited), Amos 7:9.
(3) an dsylum, since temples amongst the Hebrews, as amongst the Greeks, had the right of asylum, Isaiah 8:14; Ezekiel 11:16 (compare 1 Kings 1:50, 2:28 ).
