 II. אֵיתָן proper name, masculine a wise man 1 Kings 5:11 (where called הָאֶזְרָחִי) named with הֵימָן, כַּלְכֹּל, דַּרְדַּע; compare 1 Chronicles 2:6 (where these 4with זִמְרִי are בְּנֵי זֶרַח); also 1 Chronicles 2:8; 1 Chronicles 6:27; called בֶּןקִֿישִׁי 1 Chronicles 6:29 = בֶּןקֿוּשָׁיָ֫הוּ 1 Chronicles 15:17; where, and 1 Chronicles 15:19, named as Levitical singer with הֵימָן and אָסָף (q. v.; יְדוּתוּן for אֵיתָן in this group 1 Chronicles 25:1,6; 2 Chronicles 5:12; 35:15, see ידותון); לְאֵיתָן הָאֶזְרָחִי Psalm 89:1 (title).

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אֵיתָן & אֵתָן (for יְתָן with Aleph prosthetic, from the root יָתַן to be perennial), adj.

(1)  perennial, constant, especially used of water. נַחַל אֵיתָן “a perennial stream,” constantly flowing, Deuteronomy 21:4; Amos 5:24 and without נַתַל 1 Kings 8:2, יֶרַח הָאֵיתָנִים “the month of perennial streams” (elsewhere called Tishri), the seventh month of the Hebrew year; from the new moon of October to the new moon of November. Subst. [This sense as subst. is given as primary in Thes.] continuance. Psalms 74:15, נַהֲרוֹת אֵיתָן “rivers of continuance,” i.e. continually flowing. Used of the continuance, i.e. the flow of the sea, Exodus 14:27.- Job 33:19 in כתיב, רִיב עֲצָמָיו אֵתָן(בְּ) “with continual war in his bones,” sc. הוּכַח he is chastened.

(2) firm, valid [firmness, strength, see Thes.], Jeremiah 5:15, גּוֹי אֵיתָן “a mighty nation;” Job 12:19, אֵיתָנִים “the potent” (Vulg. optimates, ) (33:19 ); Genesis 49:24, תֵּשֵׁב בְּאֵיתָן קַשְׁתּוֹ “his bow will remain firm;” in which passage בּ is Beth essentiæ.

(3) hard, hence pernicious, terrible. Proverbs 13:15, “the way of the wicked is pernicious.” Rendered aptly enough by Luther, bringt Wehe; Jerome, vorago. [Explained in Thes. “the way of the wicked is a perennial stream,” see No. 1.] Hence

(4) poët. a rock, a crag, from hardness. Micah 6:2, הָאֵיתָנִים מוֹסְדֵי אֶרֶץ “the rocks, the foundations of the earth;” Jeremiah 49:19, 50:44, נְוֵה אֵיתָן “a stony dwelling” (comp. 49:16, תַנְוֵי םֶלַע); Numbers 24:21. [This meaning is rejected in Thes., and these passages are referred to No.1.]

(5) [Ethan], pr.n. of an Ezrahite (see אֶזְרָחִי), a wise man (1 Kings 5:11), to whom Psa 89:1-52 is attributed in its title.
