Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

כִּנּוֹר m. pl. כִּנֹּרִים Ezekiel 26:13, כִּנֹּרוֹת 1 Kings 10:12, Gr. κινύρα, κιννύρα, cithara, a harp, a musical instrument; that on which David excelled in playing; both used with regard to sacred and secular things, whether in rejoicing (Isaiah 5:12) or in sorrowing (Job 30:31), commonly accompanied by singing to the music played upon it. Genesis 4:21; Psalms 33:2, 43:4 49:5 71:22 1 Samuel 16:16, 23 1 Samuel 16:23 and often besides. Josephus says (Ant. vii. 12, § 3 ), that the cinyra had ten strings, and was struck with a plectrum; but this is contradicted by the words, 1 Samuel 16:23, 18:10 9:9, from which it may be seen that this was an instrument struck by the hand. (To this answers the Arab. كِينَارُ, كِنَّارَةُ, كَنَّارَةُ a harp. The original idea appears to me to be that of tremulous, stridulous sound, compare the root כָּנַר.)
