כּוֹבַע (Milra) Ezekiel 27:10, in pause כּוֹבָע 38:5, const. כּוֹ֫בַע (Milêl) 1 Samuel 17:5; Isaiah 59:17, pl. כּוֹבָעִים Jeremiah 46:4; 2 Chronicles 26:14, m. a helmet; twice קוֹבַע (Milra) Ezekiel 23:24, const. קוֹבַע (Milêl) 1 Samuel 17:38. Root כָּבַע. In this word there is a singular confusion of the segolate and penacute form קֹדֶשׁ, פֹּעַל with the acute עוֹלָם, which may be thus explained. Properly each of these words was a segolate, of the form פּעַל (like the Arabic قُبْعَةُ a cup). But the Cholem as strengthened by the accent, and being written fully, contrary to the common usage, in the manner of the later Hebrew and Syriac (comp. קוֹדֶשׁ Daniel 11:30, שׂוֹבֶךְ 2 Samuel 18:9, Syr. ܟܘܽܕܫܐܳ), had such force in this word, that it was retained even in the pl. כּוֹבָעִים (for כֳּבָעִים, or כָּֽבָעִים kŏvaim), as if from the singular כּוֹבָע, of the form עוֹלָם. Hence it was that such a form (כּוֹבָ֫ע) was used at least in the absolute state, although in the construct state the original segolate form was preserved (compare כָּבֵד, constr. כֶּבֶד). A longer and secondary form is found in Syr. ܩܘܽܒܥܳܐܳ. Intermediate forms, which fluctuate between the two, are כּוֹבַ֫ע Ezekiel 27:10, קוֹבַ֫ע 23:24.
