כדד (√ of following; Arabic is toil severely; fatigue, weary, harass, tread; mortar in which things are pounded, bruised; what remains in bottom of cooking-pot).
כִּבְשָׁן masc. a furnace; according to Kimchi a lime kiln, or a furnace for smelting metal, differing from תַּנּוּר an oven, Genesis 19:28; Exodus 9:8, 10 19:18. So called apparently from its subduing metal; unless it be judged best to refer it to the Arab. قبس to kindle. [In Thes. the allusion to this Arabic verb is expressly renounced.]
