חָפַשׂ to search for [“LXX. σκάλλω, Psalms 76:7. Ch. and Sam. חֲפַס, id. Kindred perhaps to חָפַר, the ר and ש being interchanged”]. Always in Kal metaph. to seek out, e.g. wisdom. Proverbs 2:4 comp. Proverbs 20:7. Psalms 64:7, יַחְפְּשׂוּ עוֹלוֹת “they devise wicked things.” (In Chald. and Sam. the proper sense is that of digging the ground, searching in the earth, comp. חָפַר No. I. 2.)
Niphal pass. to be sought out, Obadiah 1:6.
Piel, to search, Genesis 31:35, 44:12 followed by an acc. 1 Samuel 23:23 to search through, 1 Kings 20:6; Zephaniah 1:12. Metaph. once Psalms 77:7, וַיְחַפֵּשׂ רוּחִי “and my spirit made diligent search.”
Pual
(1) to be sought, hence to let one’s self be sought for; to hide one’s self, Proverbs 28:12 compare verse 28 Proverbs 28:28 and Hithpael.
(2) to be devised, Psalms 64:7.
Hithpael, properly to allow one’s self to be sought for; to hide one’s self (see Pual No. 1), hence to feign one’s self to be another, to disguise one’s self. 1 Samuel 28:8. 1 Kings 20:38, וַיִּתְחַפֵּשׂ בָּֽאֲפֵר עַל־עֵינָיו “and he disguised himself, having a bandage over his eyes.” 1 Kings 22:30. Job 30:18, בְּרָב־כֹּחַ יִתְחַפֵּשׂ לְבוּשִׁי “by (its) great power my garment (i.e. skin) is changed,” comp. verse 19 Job 30:19.
