Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

חֲמוֹר , חֲמֹר [“once f. 2 Samuel 19:27 ”], m.

(1)  an ass, Genesis 49:14; Exodus 13:13 so called from the reddish colour, which in southern countries belongs not only to the wild ass, but also to the common or domestic ass; from which it is called in Spanish, burro, burrico. Comp. also צָחַר.

(2) i.q. חֹמֶר a heap; this more rare form is perhaps employed on account of the paronomasia. Judges 15:16, בִּלְחִי הַחֲמוֹר חֲמוֹר חֲמוֹרָתַיִם “with the jawbone of an ass (I have killed) a heap, (even) two heaps.” Root חָמַר No. 3.

(3) [Hamor], pr.n. of a Hivite, a cotemporary of the patriarchs, Genesis 33:19, 34:2 Joshua 24:32; Judges 9:28.
